New Kitten

I am being open to the possibility of a New Kitten (my sweet old Harry-cat died NY day) and I am thinking of a black one but letting the Universe pick him or her out for me.

Any good ideas for a name?

:apaw:

DanaC 01-04-2009 01:26 PM

Awww. Sorry to hear bout Harry-cat.

How bout Dougal ?

Trilby 01-04-2009 01:34 PM

Is Dougal a British name? I rather like it!

(thanks----Harry was 13 and had a heart murmur---a thing that increases the chance of stroke. I loved him very much.)

limey 01-04-2009 01:37 PM

Last time we were up for a new kitten I had decided that we didn't need a male, or a tabby. Maurice is, of course, tabby and male and just right.
Won't the name suggest itself when the kitten appears? That's what happens here ...

Of course, you are right! I am jumping the gun. But kitten-naming is sooooo FUN!

The possibilities are endless! (and, I'm feeling a bit lonely for Carly. She is so sad and wondering where her mate is. He would groom her every day.)

Sundae 01-04-2009 02:34 PM

Dylan.
Just so my adored-but-gone cat is reborn.

Otherwise, I like cats with two names.
I call Diz Monkey Trousers quite often, just to make up for it.
I love the cat's name in The Dead Zone - Speedy Tomato and in Hogwarts - Mrs Norris.

Then again, I had fish called Lenin and Stalin when I was studying world powers in the twentieth century. They both died and I won a fish from the fair. He lived for years and years and years (well, one more - four). He was called Ho Chi Minh. I think he survived out of stubborness.

I also had hamsters called Silas and Snape at different times.
Oh and one called Charlie Jackpot (after a character in a Mark Gatiss novel).

And cats called Gabriel and Raphael (brothers - despite being determined not to give any cat of mine a cutesy double-act name).
Diz & Dyl came named for me, thankfully I guess.

Monster, Jinx & DucksNuts had cat naming threads a while back - you might want to check those out.
But I have to say - I envy you so much!
I'd love to have a new Singa to name. Ent gonna happen for so many reasons, but it is a lovely dream!

Trilby 01-04-2009 02:42 PM

ah...the name Gabriel gives me an idea...how 'bout Ariel? Ariel Snape! or, just Snape./

jinx 01-04-2009 05:02 PM

The black cat I dissected in HS I named Azrael, after Gargamel's cat on the Smurfs, and the islamic angel of death.
The black cat I found in the barn and brought home I named Spooky. The dogs ate the rest of her littermates and her crazy mom abandoned her.... but she lived to be about 20.

My mom named her last cat Morpheus... called him Morty.

I want new a kitten too... a tortie point that I will name Mark.

Nirvana 01-04-2009 05:16 PM

What a heart warming story! ;)

hard to name a hypothetical cat. why not wait until the Universe supplies, then fit the name to the beast

fargon 01-04-2009 06:01 PM

Need PIC'S!!!

morethanpretty 01-04-2009 06:59 PM

I named my kitten Zoonie, zoon supposedly being greek for "creature" or some such. I think its cute.
My parent's cat is officially named Shadow, but it usually just gets called Kitty b/c we took so long to settle on the name. Shadow is really only used for vet visits.

lumberjim 01-04-2009 07:11 PM

Pooka 01-04-2009 07:16 PM

Pics and a personality description are needed to help.

We had a pair of brothers originally named Meepers and Peepers that the vet erroneously renamed Meepers and Peppers... that were then renamed by Flint Fat Boy and Little B... at the time they were pretty much the same size, but over time Fatty really lived up to his name... he was HUGE... somewhere on here there is a pic of him laying on top of the base drum... and filling the entire surface. I thought of them more as "Carpet Sharks" than cats... they were grey with white bellies and would lurk around waiting to attack me... they were jealous of the pregnant belly. Evil buggers... they now live with our best friend who dotes on them like a loving yet over protective stoner father.

We once upon a time adopted a cat that we lovingly named Squeaky Beak on account of the fact that she sounded more like a baby Terradactyl then a cat. She was seriously emotionally disturbed. She lived with her dead mother for probably a week by the time we came across her. She was in perpetual heat and yowled constantly... she pooped in my laundy, dry cleaning and the baby's room... I proceeded to put her out... don't worry she found a nice home and visits regularly in our backyard.

There will be no more cats for us... fish are much more fun and far more relaxing.

DanaC 01-05-2009 05:04 AM

When my brother and his wife were courting, they bought two kittens. A boy and a girl and named them for each other's middle names: Frank and Beth. Unfortunately Beth had been incorrectly sexed and had to have a name change. So they ended up with Frank and Bert.

sweetwater 01-05-2009 05:21 AM

Kaboodle.

Or name the kitten with the sound of a can opener operating to guarantee s/he will come when called.

Aliantha 01-05-2009 05:21 AM

We named our black cat 'shadow'. We named our rag doll cat 'dolly'. We named the runt of the litter 'skinny'. We had a peach face called 'peachy'.

I guess you can see where I'm going with this right?

No, Ali, Brianna is NOT going to name her cat Nigger.

Shawnee123 01-05-2009 07:50 AM

I never know what I will name a pet until I meet them.

Gainesboro Thomas Hall was named because he is the Blue Boy (dark gray, and I took license with the spelling of Thomas Gainsboro.

Taj Ma Hall was so named because she is part stripe/part calico and has an orange dot on her forehead.

Madison Toto Hall was so named because when he followed us home (Toto) I remarked he was scraggly and needed some medicine (ex thought I said Madison.)

Toonces Riley Hall was so named because at the time, Toonces was all the rage and Riley goes well with Toonces.

Bit of a Thatcher theme here.... Dennis, then Mark .....you don't perchance already have one named Maggie, do you?

DanaC 01-05-2009 12:48 PM

Russel Brand has a cat called Margeret Thatcher.

buahahaha

We had a Black Angus Steer that my ex wanted to call Nigger, but he decided on Nugget instead.

I would call her "Jedda" , mainly because the story of a little aboriginal girl called Jedda, who was raised by a white cattle station wife when her own mother died during childbirth.

Well what about 'blackie' or 'sooty' or 'nightmare' or 'darkness'?

DanaC 01-06-2009 02:28 AM

My nan had a dog called Sootie.

sweetwater 01-06-2009 05:52 AM

Onyx is nice, I think.

Pie 01-06-2009 10:30 AM

Obsidian?
Cygnus X-1? (there's a black hole there)

I thought that was just a made-up thing from Rush lyrics.

Pie 01-06-2009 11:58 AM

Oh, you mean that screeching that occurs over the perfectly good music?
No, can't say I've heard it.

Griff 01-07-2009 06:40 AM

My uncle had a black German Shepard named Spook when I was a kid. I didn't know he was a racist.... and he didn't know he'd have black grandchildren.

DanaC 01-07-2009 12:09 PM

Spook? How is that racist?

jinx 01-07-2009 12:13 PM

In the same way that eggplant, canadian, or mul(ignan) is.

DanaC 01-07-2009 12:36 PM

Ok. Eggplant I've heard of. Mul(ignan)?

Oh and Canadian?

[eta] I've never heard black people called spooks before.

Pico and ME 01-07-2009 12:39 PM

My husband named our black kitty 'Turbo'. He replaced my beloved Bo, who I had for 13 years. Turbo sort of lived up to his name when he was young...he always dashed around at full speed. Now the name is not quite as apt.

lumberjim 01-07-2009 12:49 PM

mulignan ( pronounced mool in yahn) is italian for eggplant. sometimes degos call black guys moolie for short.

DanaC 01-07-2009 12:53 PM

Ohhh. Ok thanks.

Pie 01-07-2009 12:56 PM

Huh. We sometimes refer to our cats as "eggplants", that being the general shape they take in some forms of repose. Certainly, no racial overtones were implied.

As a kid, my really nice friendly neighbors down the street had a black lab named Toby. It wasn't until Roots came out that I learned Toby was supposedly a very common slave name. I still wonder about them.

xoxoxoBruce 01-07-2009 01:02 PM

Pie, regional... the historical animosity between the Italians and Blacks in the Philadelphia area, has created some unique jargon that other people wouldn't get.

That's not fair. Suddenly some TV show, movie or newspaper headline will attach a significance to or even stigmatizes a word or phrase that was perfectly innocent to most if not all of the world. Look at the word gay.

"Spooks" is called "MI-5" in the US.

Pie 01-07-2009 04:37 PM

It's also a radar, the SPQ-9B (pronounced "Spook-9B").

Here's some names to avoid; unless, you want to be a copy cat!

Top dog and cat names of 2008

DanaC 01-08-2009 04:38 AM

Ahhh. Ok. This all makes sense now. Thanks Pie and HM.

See, for me, when I heard the word 'spook' for a black dog, i thought becaue he's a dark furred animal and might move through night like a spook/ghost. But then I thought....oh!...if earlier generations of racsts weren't seeing black people as entirely human, would they have made that same kind of association for black people?

But clearly...it's got fuck all to do with that :P

Griff 01-08-2009 05:29 AM

...and let's not pretend racism makes sense.

DanaC 01-08-2009 03:38 PM

Frak you GeeGee, I was talking linguistically. :P

Really? Miss Fuzzbutt is unusual? I think every cat I've ever owned has been called that at some point. Usually when they've parked said fuzzbutt on my keyboard.

CzinZumerzet 01-08-2009 05:01 PM

Picture the scene.

Car stuck in London traffic with daddie and step-mum (me) in the front and dreadfully fractious bad temepered three year old in the back. I let him know that we really are having two kittens arrive any day now and (sucking up) I ask what he would like to name his kitten, made of black fluff and feathery down and huge greeny eyes.

"Nuffink"!! shitty stepson yells with a roar and kicking attack on the back of my seat. "Oh come on darling" I coo insincerely, you must be able to think of a name.

"NUFFINK"!! he roars and throws a classic three year old tantrum.

Nuffink she became, known to close family as Nuff-nuff, and her sister was Lilly, being all white. Shitty three year old graduated with honours in Maths and Computer Sciences a year ago, Nuffink just celebrated her 20th birthday and as truly bonkers as ever.

skysidhe 01-08-2009 11:06 PM

sorry about Harry :sniff:

after my cat died and I got a black cat too and I named her gizmo because as a she was so small.
( still is ) she reminded me of a little...toy but after learning her personality after a week or two I changed it to zoie. She is a little princess. ( still is )

I guess what I am saying is to maybe wait to see their personality. Oh and the name gizmo is free to use.

Juniper 01-08-2009 11:34 PM

Candy Corn (CC for short) is available for adoption. She's a lovely calico and we adore her, she just doesn't get on well with the existing cat population. You could rename her. :D
