Feb 18, 2009: Dormitory
 

The University of Enschede, in the Netherlands, needed a new dormitory.

Like many Colleges and Universities in the US, they built a nine story building to make good use of the land it takes up.
I'm sure there are stairs, but maybe elevators too, there certainly would be here.


They also made it look kind of spiffy.

yea, I could see it now. US parents would sue the shit out of the school if one of their kids fell. It could never happen and would never be built in the US. For sure.

Anybody can climb up the side of a building.

But it takes a real man to do it while wearing wooden shoes.

Yeah I can even picture lawyers manning a card table at the base.

The darlets high school has a climbing wall and both darlets have been up. It's very safe when the safety rules are enforced.

Yeah, and just make everyone who uses it sign a release.

Releases dont do anything but try and scare the signer out of participating....bc it doesnt hold up in court at all....

A nearby public park has a climbing wall and they won't even put in a skatepark. Of course, it isn't quite as high as that building.

i live in Iowa and its flat. really really flat. don't believe me? here's a photo of the highest point in iowa.

The Iowa thing, combined with rock climbing where there aren't any hills reminds me a lot of the famous "Ski Terre Haute" posters.

The highest point in Iowa 1670ft, but the lowest is 480 ft, so the difference is 1190 ft., 12 times taller than that dorm building.

And the Netherlands has you beat with 1053 ft and minus 23 ft.

That said, I've driven across Iowa a dozen times... Damn, that's flat. :haha:

College kids today are so spoiled. I went back to my old campus a couple years ago, and it actually caused me to stop donating to them. They have it so much better than when I went there.

It is a generational thing. It has happened everywhere.

Kids today have helicopter parents. Anything they want, anything they need, and lots of things they don't. I remember having 35 cents for the pop machine and being all puffed up and proud. :rolleyes:

I just got a letter from my alma mater saying that in these tough economic times, it's more important to donate than ever. They went on to say that similar schools have seen their donations drop this year, but that my school has actually seen an increase. So please give more.

My alma mater is very smart. After you donate, perky college girls call you up and thank you for donating.
