Aug 5, 2009: Ants

Ants are tiny, and it's a good thing after seeing how they carry this potato chip up a wall and into their home.
If they were bigger they'd be rustling cows.

Across the sidewalk and up the wall.

http://cellar.org/2009/ants1.jpg

Then at the top they turn that sucker sideways and slide it into the opening under the cap.

http://cellar.org/2009/ants2.jpg

The ants standing on top of that chip, while the maneuver it into the opening, must be the bosses.

Sarasvati48 08-05-2009 01:49 AM

The epitome of teamwork!

nil_orally 08-05-2009 03:19 AM

Formicating little bastards.

Antimatter 08-05-2009 03:25 AM

Impressive, but they should eat more healthily if they want to stay fit.

SPUCK 08-05-2009 05:12 AM

I wish I could ring a bell and have them clean up my dishes like that.

Then ring it again to have them all leave within 60 seconds.

ZenGum 08-05-2009 06:44 AM

But can they get the lid off the jar of salsa?

No, wait, that's an octopus.

capnhowdy 08-05-2009 07:25 AM

Why don't they just go to the food and eat it there? Wouldn't that be easier? Maybe they're not too smart after all.

Undertoad 08-05-2009 08:23 AM

Wait! Listen carefully --

hup - 2 - 3 - 4 - hup - 2 - 3 - 4

Sheldonrs 08-05-2009 09:47 AM

And if you peep into the crack in the wall you'll see a tiny TV and bowls of pop corn and a keg.

Shawnee123 08-05-2009 09:57 AM

Those ants have high hopes!

I guess I'm getting cynical in my old age, but I think those pics were staged.

Gravdigr 08-05-2009 10:48 AM

I think that I read all the ants in the world outweigh all the humans in the world. Can that be right?

I know of some ladies that would like that to happen to their ex-husbands.

Hillrick 08-05-2009 02:06 PM

Hah! These ants think they're so smart but OBVIOUSLY they don't know about partially hydrogenated oils!

Unless it's made with Olean. In which case, there will be many tiny flushing sounds in about 10 minutes.

Cloud 08-05-2009 02:10 PM

'Cause they can only read Formish.

I remember seeing that flick as a kid, being pissed off because the color in the title was the only part of the movie that was in color.
I kept waiting for a giant foot to come down and squash them all.

ZenGum 08-06-2009 12:21 AM

Here ya go:

:footpyth:

better late than never.

TheMercenary 08-06-2009 11:41 AM

Man I would have waited til they got that sucker in and then filled that crack with liquid ant killer til it flowed out the cracks at the bottom of the wall.

After looking at those pics several times and thinking about them for a day, I have to agree with dar.
A cute little set up, but a set up nonetheless.

Queen of the Ryche 08-06-2009 12:41 PM

Set-up agreed: Isn't there usually a trail of those suckers, not just one little conglomeration around a chip?

Shawnee123 08-06-2009 12:43 PM

You're a bunch of antholes.

Well then how the eff do they carry the chip? Are you saying they get in a line and pass it over their heads like freaks jumping into a crowd at a concert?

Happy Monkey 08-06-2009 12:53 PM

I've seen plenty of nature shows on PBS where ants team up to carry a large find back to the nest.

Queen of the Ryche 08-06-2009 12:54 PM

Yeah! Chip surfing! Woo hoo!!!

Just saying whenever I've seen an ant invasion, there may be a crowd gathered around the bounty, but there tends to be a trail ahead of and behind the blob. Just saying...

dar512 08-06-2009 02:28 PM

My problem is with the second to last and last pictures. How do those little ants get the chip to go from vertical to horizontal? Just seems suspect to me.

Shawnee123 08-06-2009 02:32 PM

Wow, you folks don't hang out much with ants, do you? They're super duper incredible!

I want an ant smilie and I want it now.

spudcon 08-07-2009 10:42 PM

If those ants want that chip in that crack, they'll find a way. When I was a kid, I used to put different things on anthills, just to see how they'd cope. They always solve the problem. I once put a large Nightcrawler worm on a red ant hill, and they swarmed and worked all day until they made their hole big enough to drag him in.

you just have a chip on your shoulder. Bada-boom.

I think we were on vacation when this IOTD occurred. Better late that never, though, eh?

I could tell you how I happened across it, but then I might have to kill you. However, I believe this is what it was missing:
