insomnia

i can't sleep.
i worked all night last night, and came home, and could not sleep.
i've been up all day, and now its time to go back to work.
this is killing me.
does anyone else here suffer from this kind of thing?
i don't know what to do.

lumberjim 11-17-2009 09:04 PM

drink some wine and masturbate?

skysidhe 11-17-2009 09:30 PM

lol lj It's couldn't hurt

ahem * stops chuckling *

I used to work graveyard and couldn't sleep much during the day so I ended up taking naps throughout the day. You just can't have a life during the day. You have to rest even if you don't sleep. Sorry.I know that's not much help.

It's not clinical insomnia just a wonky work schedule.

Making work at night interesting is a plus too. I had a great coworker and we would laugh a lot. We kept busy. Made coffee when appropriate, moved around., ghost hunted or rather my coworker would get freaked sometimes. (it was an old building with underground tunnels and attics) So if you can make it fun at night going to work won't seem like suck a drag and you won't feel so tired.

yup, many dwellars have isues with this. try a search of the cellar to pop up older topics.

Cure insomnia, by surfing the net! :right:

xoxoxoBruce 11-18-2009 01:23 AM

Read a few of UG's posts.

ZenGum 11-18-2009 04:11 AM

What would happen if you read one of TW's more energetic posts backwards?

Griff 11-18-2009 05:15 AM

If you're drinking caffeine make sure you stop by noon. Breathe deep and slow counting the draw. Start over when you reach ten and concentrate on feeling the air change in your lungs.

glatt 11-18-2009 07:34 AM

I have a fair amount of advice for insomnia with a normal sleep schedule, but I've got nothing for you if you work the night shift and are supposed to sleep during the day. That goes against everything your body wants you to do. I imagine you need to trick your body. Very dark window shades. No lights on. Soothing soft music or white noise to block out the daytime sounds.

Is this schedule a permanent one, or just for a while? I would cut out any caffeine about ten hours before you plan to sleep. So maybe that means after midnight for you.

W.HI.P 11-18-2009 07:28 PM

i've always lived the night, so thats not really the issue.
the sun is not my friend.
if i go to sleep at 4pm, and then stay awake all the way 42 hours later, i might find it hard to go to bed at 10 am, and then if i can't sleep and have to report for duty at midnight, well, you can imagine how exhausted i am at work.
thats the kind of thing i suffered yesturday, and it showed immediatly as i dropped my 600 dollar cellphone in [a clean] toilet bowl, and as i was reaching to get it out, it flushed[automatic], anyhow i got it out after a 30 second struggle.
the phone, believe it or not, is working perfectly.
anyhow, you get the idea of how absent minded i got after working and working and not sleeping for a couple days.
anyways, i just woke up now, so i'm back to normal.
back to the topic...forget work, its not to blame for my insomnia.
my caffeine intake is pretty high, but i can't say that its to blame entirely for my issues.
all i can say to really describe it, is sometimes, after not sleeping for long period of times, i am unable to sleep no matter how much i try, and i go as far as 3 days without sleep even if the time to sleep is available.
its not really that big of an issue, until i have to work without sleeping, than its pretty bad.

lj, i don't drink.
skysidhe, my work is very interesting.
glatt, pitch black is very helpfull, as is music...what do you mean by white noise?

skysidhe 11-18-2009 07:39 PM

I'm glad you have an interesting workplace and your phone is still working.

Staying up at night for me wasn't the problem either. It was sleeping. I know how the light can seep in past your eyelids and go into your brain.

I bought some night shades and they helped which means I could maybe get a three or four hour nap if I was lucky. They have black out curtains too. I hope you can find some relief. The night shades worked some. They make your eyelids stay down :)

There's your problem, dude!

White noise is like the hum of the TV on standby ...it's sound that prevents it being totally silent but isn't anything you can actually "listen" to which might keep you awake concentrating. You can hear it but you can't listen to it. People who are used to lots of noise can often filnd complete silence too "claustrophobic"

I'm guessing you're all busy with the premieres of New Moon right now? Do you sign autographs in blood? No wonder it doesn't matter if you have a bad week at the bookies  Re you the one on the left or the right?

monster 11-18-2009 08:07 PM

watching the wings here ...after a pause to replace the broken glass.

My work schedule does it to me too. It takes me a day or more to recover and then I have to do it again. I have just learned to live with it.

wolf 11-20-2009 03:33 AM

My work schedule is doing it to me right now. Midnight guy called out puking tonight. He claimed that he had driven most of the way to work before he ralphed on himself (I'm guessing he was in the wife's Sebring rather than his own Mustang) and drove home. So I stayed to help the other midnight guy out until things settled down. Dealt with a couple of patients (including a really crazy dude in restraints that was sexually preoccupied), did an insurance precertification, and here I am. At home. With absolutely not one speck of tiredness to be found. I even woke up extra early today because it was girlfriends' tea day, today. I have been awake 20 hours. It's not a caffeine issue, because I had one cup of coffee this morning, a couple of cups of tea this afternoon, and one cup of coffee at work at around 1700 hours. I mainline the stuff, ordinarily, and can and have finished a 24 ounce coffee 1/2 hour before I need to go to sleep, and I sleep like a log (was going to say a baby, but I don't cry every couple of hours and pee myself).

Maybe I'll just have a lie down and pretend about sleeping and see what happens.

SamIam 11-20-2009 10:26 AM

I do it to myself. Was up until 2 am last night finishing a mystery novel. Now I'm all tired and cranky. Only myself to blame.

I woke up at 4:30 this morning. All bright eyed and bushy tailed. Do you know how little there is to do in my small town at 4:30 in the morning? And its 4 degrees out. And its still pitch black. And I'm out of coffee. /end rant. :eyebrow:

Cicero 12-05-2009 01:31 PM

I am out of coffee and cream....I decided to make a cup of English Breakfast instead, but that doesn't quite cut it now does it? another rant/end

About insomnia: the other night I took some tryptophan and melatonin. It worked nicely. There is a local herb shop that sells it. I usually just read until I go to sleep. If you really want to sleep quickly pick up business management materials from the 50's. You will probably pass out as quickly as I do.

Trilby 12-08-2009 02:33 AM

I'm having insomnia now! :) YAY!

dar512 12-08-2009 09:13 AM

Something worth checking into is whether you are anemic. The only time I have insomnia is when I'm running anemic and I've had caffeine.

I've used Valerian root - St. John's wort or an all natural concoction called Calm (calcium/magnesium)- you can get any of these at a local herbal store or a vitamin shop

Sundae 12-14-2009 01:18 PM

Check any herbal medication against your existing prescription drugs first, Bri.
I know there are contraindications for St John's Wort.

We have a natural tablet called Kalms over here.
They've never worked for me, sadly.
Nothing does, except prescription medication. And even that doesn't always (Trazadone gave me restless legs instead of knocking me out)

herbal Rx usually don't work on me, either - my systems blown out from all the RX I've taken. I woke up during breast ca. surgery!! HA! was surprise for them, I can tell you.

Trazodone makes me feel very hung-over the next day (something Ambien doesn't do).

the nasty chemo gave me restless legs - I take ropinorol (sp?) for that now. Otherwise my legs drive me nuts starting around 7pm.
