Google Voice
I have two invites I'm willing to donate to a good cause. Let me know if you'd like one. Post here, or PM me with a valid Email addy I can send the invite to. First come first served. (Unless someone gives me a REALLY good story on why they should have it!)
(And if you have invites that you're willing to share, feel free to post in this thread so others can benefit from it!) |
I looked it up but still don't understand what Google voice and google wave are about. Can you explain them? Gotta be invited...ohhh...sounds so exclusive that I want to jump in and say "I WANT IT!!" But what to do with it? :p
|
Google Voice is very nice: control your voice phone calls completely, let them ring through to any number you like depending on who's calling, and all voicemail can appear in your mailbox as speech-to-text translated emails.
It's now my voicemail for my mobile phone, and I dig it, because I don't have to listen to most voicemails, I can read them. The translations aren't very good yet, but they're good enough. Furthermore if there are people you know you will just let go through to voicemail, you give them your Google Voice number, and you get their message even though they never ring your phone. |
I'd like to try that.
|
Invitation sent.
|
Google has text to speach too.
|
speech-to-text is harder!
|
yep
I don't want either. I am kind of fixed in my technologies.I like to read text and listen to calls. |

it lets you search for words within the number you get.... (484) 601-COCK is available should I? |
Is it hard to set up? Does it cost anything? Is the Google voice number a real phone number? Does Google provide it? What area code does it have? The whole thing sounds so bizarre and foreign to me, but I like the idea of voice mails being converted to text.
|
it's giving me errors reserving a number. says call back later.
setting up my cell number to go to it's voice mail was no sweat though. gonna call myself now and test it. |
oh wow.
it emailed me my message.... mistranslated, of course. but it has a link in the email and you can click it, and it will play. you don't even hafta call voicemail. ... then you can download it if you want. |
I can has?
|
Specs that wants to poop on our store. Yes, it is my store.
Play message can you play it?prolly not i guess edit...maybe you can |
I could.

will i be able to invite at some point?
|
If anyone has any invites left, I'd like one. If you get some, please remember me.
|
:celebrat: Woooo! Thank you, Tony!
Now, is it better to get a number in your local area code, or one for East Jabip (aka BFE) that has some element of your name in it? Oh, and if I ever get invites to hand out, I'll do it here! |
OK. I read up on it a little and am interested. I'd like to try it. Dagney, do you have any invites left? I can PM you my gmail address.
|
i keep finding funny numbers that are available....but the frickin thing keeps having an error. did you get one pie? is it me?
|
Nope, I'm getting errors too. "We had an error. Please try later."
A google search for that error term leads to this thread. Perhaps a bunch of invites went out recently and there's a glut of people trying to sign up right now? |
If you already have a google/gmail account, go to www.google.com/voice. There's a link at the bottom to request an invite.
|
I had done that a while back dar, and nothing ever came of it. I dunno.
|
Sycamore, do you still need an invite? I have 3 to give away.
I had this when it was Grand Central -- I liked it because my cell #, which I use for my business #, is a Cincinnati number and since I live near Dayton I wanted a Dayton area code too. You can have any area code you want, or at least you could back then. |
Still can, if the damn servers were working </grumble>

edit: seems to be working now, Pie.
i just went with my current number at a different area code. looks like you can change it for $10 fee. |
The last of my invites are gone. Just FYI. Hope the three who got 'em enjoy!

Thanks everyone for helping out with the invites while I was trapped in work hell yesterday!
Still have my two invites available - so holla if you want! :) Kel |

Yep, got mine this morning. So now I apparently live in Wisconsin. :) Thanks again, Tony! I've requested invites, and if/when I get them, I'll post here.
|
I'll give it a try, Dags, if you still have one. elspode@gmail.com

Yerrrrp. Can't use GVoice with my work phone number; it picks up too soon and diverts all my voicemails to the work system!
Crud. |

Google Voice is open to everyone today.
|
I still haven't figured out what it would do for me. I spend most of my time avoiding phone calls.
|
It works great for that.
you can get a whole new number that always goes straight to voicemail. then you can listen to it from your computer or your phone, or try to decipher the speech to text text message it will send you. |
I love it. I read all my voicemails. Got one th other day that only said "Celebrate charcoal". No idea... Don't really care....

Damn, I just deleted a really funny one from my husband.
My Mom's voicemails come through really cleanly -- maybe the slight Indian accent helps with the text-to-speech? :eyebrow: |
