Ugly Cars

Once in a while, Detroit makes a car so hideous you wonder how it ever got from drawing table to assembly line. Then somebody buys it... I know its a matter of taste, so what is the ugliest car out there?

perth 09-30-2002 01:23 PM

this is the ugliest car.

~james

dave 09-30-2002 01:32 PM

Close, perth, but no cigar.

http://www.chrysler.com/pt_cruiser/

Ugh.

perth 09-30-2002 01:42 PM

i dunno, chrysler seems to have a knack for designing ugly cars. sad story, we very nearly decided to buy a pt cruiser, because feature-wise, its really not a bad car. but you are right, its an ugly-ass car.

pontiac makes a real turd of an suv.

perth 09-30-2002 01:46 PM

oh, and lets not forget this abomination

~james

dave 09-30-2002 01:52 PM

HEY. I like the new Beetles.

Actually, I hated them, but now I am uncontrollably drawn toward them.

I want a silver one.

With a spoiler. *ducks*

Griff 09-30-2002 01:53 PM

Then there is chevy's embarassment.

Griff 09-30-2002 01:56 PM

VWs designs always appeal to me, but Dave man thats a chick car. :)

dave 09-30-2002 01:57 PM

I CAN'T HELP IT! I DIDN'T DECIDE TO LIKE IT! THE GODDAMNED THING WANTS ME TO WANT IT! ASJDFOIQJWDJFAQQQAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!

perth 09-30-2002 01:59 PM

thats the dumbest truck ive ever seen. who ever heard of a truck too small to haul a mattress.

dave, dont feel bad. i drive a saturn. its not ugly, but it is about the plainest, most boring car on the road. its a 4-banger, and when we bought it, i insisted on having a standard transmission just so i could pretend i was driving a car with some power.

imagine a big buzz-headed guy with an infant in the back seat of a saturn, popping the clutch and making 'vroom'ing noises while the girl in the passenger seat rolls her eyes and sighs. :)

warch 09-30-2002 02:50 PM

Aztek- Butt ugly
are they searching for the neo-realist Gremlin?

Griff 09-30-2002 02:56 PM

*neo-realist * Don't even start...

Undertoad 09-30-2002 03:52 PM

As long as you got a manual, you got class, James!

Hubris Boy 09-30-2002 05:09 PM

Now... what are we talkin' about here, Griff? The ugliest American car? The ugliest car currently in production? The ugliest car ever?

Nic Name 09-30-2002 06:56 PM

Gremlin

Griff 09-30-2002 07:00 PM

Yah know how some critters are so ugly they're cute, like this aussie pooch layin' here? Thats where I am on the Pacer. Now if my parents were serial owners of them instead of this abortion, I'd sing a different tune. Take the hammer to foreign cars as well...

perth 09-30-2002 08:09 PM

had a hell of a time finding a decent pic of a chevy monza (yes i know that pic is a model). i had one of these my freshman year of college. had a love/hate relationship with it, and the monza or an international scout would be my dream restoration. while the monza is just ugly ugly, the scout is cool ugly.

Oh, and what happened to that '78 Monza? It caught fire at a 7-Eleven parking lot...damned carburetor.

I like the new Beetle...and if you all don't, you can go to hell. In fact, maybe I'll just head south to Mexico and buy a Sedan (aka the "old" beetle) for $7400US. :)

Hmmm...some cars for the Ugly Hall of Fame:

--Buick Rendezvous (current)
--Toyota Echo (current)
--Chevrolet Malibu/Oldsmobile Cutlass (current)
--Subaru SVX (early 90s)
--VW Jetta (prior to the current model, so...pre-2001?)
--Chevrolet Lumina APV/Pontiac Trans Sport (late 80s-mid 90s)
--Those first-generation Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota minivans that looked like ripoffs of the old VW Bus (mid 80s)

jaguar 09-30-2002 09:09 PM

The new beatle is terribly designed. I do mean terribly. At least they did a good job with the new mini. I want one. Since i'm a poor student i'm getting an old one. Ah well.

Undertoad 09-30-2002 09:10 PM

We can take this in dangerous directions. I was gonna say that the new Caddy CTS that Griff posted is not uglier than the AMC Pacer, but that I'd bet the people who choose to drive that particular Caddy are assholes. It just has an asshole-y feel about it. The Pacer has a feel like it's gonna be driven by the man from Donkey Kong.

And then I thought about giving examples of other asshole-y cars on the road. You know what I mean? But then I thought, what if one of us drives one of 'em?

It's all pure prejudice. But hey, it's fun.

Developped at a cost of 300 million yen (2.4 million dollars), the eight-wheel-drive vehicle, called KAZ, is capable of reaching a top speed of 311 kmh (192 mph), its developper Prof. Hiroshi Shimizu of Keio University says. The 6.7-meter (14.7 feet)-long KAZ uses 84 lithium-ion batteries, which once charged enables the car to run for about 300 kilometers (186 miles). (AP Photo/Naokazu Oinuma)
Is it ugly?

Mjk 10-01-2002 04:39 AM

For my taste, the two ugliest cars in production are:
Renault Kangoo Express and Toyota Yaris Verso

Also the names of those cars are quite stupid, I think.

But then again, I like the New Beetle and the Chrysler mentioned here earlier...

Good thing you self-censored. :)

Nic, I predict that by the year 2000 we will all be driving flying cars not unlike the 54 FX. The design is necessary to get high altitude performance, I'm willing to trade fashion for function.

Beauty is in the mind, I guess

Looking at the first dozen posts (and assuming they're not trolling) lends the reader a particular view, not of the cars, but of the poster's tastes. The Cadillac, eh. It makes a statement.

But not liking the Cruiser, Prowler or VW?

Youz folks are NOT car people. Sheesh.

(And I'll be buying an Avalanche soon enough to go with our Cruiser and two Vettes.)

Citations? yeah, pedestrian uninteresting cars.

Gremlins and Vegas? Hey, the clothes came back in style...I'm SURE 'retro' styling will hearken back to the seventies someday. :P

That new hardtop convertible Lexus -- I just can't figure it out. On the Surface, it's just wrong. Wrong lines doing wrong things at the wrong places...but I can't stop LOOKING at it. It's like a trainwreck...but guilded in Crome (and the finest CorINthian Leather.)

Thats why they design different cars, theres no accounting for taste. :) Watched the ball game last night, it seems Subaru is slapping the goofy panels (ala avalanche) on one of their rigs. I like the idea of protecting the fenders etc... but their execution? After seeing everbodies pet ugly, I'm thinking Aztec gets the the award for cars presently in production.

This atrocity must surely have a place in automobile hell reserved for it...

Looks like an old East German-made Wartburg painted up to celebrate German reunification. Kinda spiffy. I like the picture of the Brandenburg Gate over the windshield, and the obsolete BRD and DDR vehicle IDs surmounted by the new, reunified "D". Lots of symbolism on that car, if you know where to look for it.

Nic Name 10-04-2002 12:47 AM

I think it's an East German Trabant.

and so is this classic ...

The Amphicar is ugly and sometimes it leaks but, generally, it floats better than a Suzuki.

Griff 10-05-2002 09:37 AM

I know a guy who had an Amphicar. When he lived in Boston he used to slip into the Charles to beat the traffic, very cool.

fascinating history ugly car

headsplice 10-30-2002 11:06 AM

I'm suprised that no one has mentioned the SMART car. I especially like how the frame ("tridion safety cell" ????) prevents it from becoming "more compact." Hee hee. Not possible at all.

perth 10-30-2002 11:12 AM

ugh. does that even count as a car? it would look fine, i suppose, on a golf course.

perth 10-30-2002 05:40 PM

not sure this qualifies as a car either, but its ugly as fuck.
