Hey wait a sec... lose the trust fund check, change the vans to flip flops and the PBR to SIL, and that's ME! Ffs... I had no idea...

Trilby 04-17-2010 03:55 AM

I straight out asked him - last night - if he was a hipster and he said NO and his gf said NO.

BUT - and here's the ironic part - He's 8 foot tall, she's 4 foot tall, he wears old school Chuck Taylors. Tats? None visible. Glasses, cabbie hat? No. but - there are ominous signs...

complete lack of trust fund check probably cancells out all other debts, though.

ok, I've read this whole thread and still can't figure out what a hipster really is. Do they do something weird or just dress like the pictures featured above?

I think it's a "type" but with the money to back it all up. Like the rich hippies - like the kids who followed the Dead back in teh day. They were usually from pretty well-off families. they were just "experimenting" with the vagabond lifestyle. what got me wondering just exactly what defines a hipster was a stephen colbert bit about how one borough of NYC (Williamsburg??) had the least percentage of census returns and it was a "hipster" neighborhood.

I know they are supposed to wear ironic T-shirts. :)

Is today's hipster yester- years beatnik?

Maybe Ibram would know. He is sort of hipster ish ( hip ) young,trendy...ect

xoxoxoBruce 04-17-2010 10:16 AM

Yes, Beatniks is what I thought too. Then came Hippies, and now the pendelum has swung back.

SamIam 04-17-2010 10:32 AM

Good thing you saved that set of Bongo drums, eh Bruce? ;)

Bring back Maynard (from Doobie Gilles).

Gravdigr 05-02-2010 01:28 PM

Unless the kid is, like, 50...not a hipster. Didn't the last 'hipster' die around 1973?

xoxoxoBruce 05-02-2010 04:05 PM

Nope, there's a whole new genre of the term.

Elspode 05-02-2010 10:26 PM

I have a very hip friend who tells me that being a hipster is an undesirable thing. The term itself is used derisively by people who actually *are* hip to refer to people who try to be perceived as hip, but sadly, are not.

You aren't just wondering if he's smoking dope, are you? Because he is. That part's easy.

Gah, Bruce. All that was too tired in 1970, when conventionally unconventional was the rage. Goys will be goys...

monster 05-05-2010 08:43 PM

I was born in 1970.

This is a whole different scene, just the term has been recycled. Shit evolves so fast these days, any descriptive term has to be date tagged. :haha:

DangerouslySimple 05-07-2010 03:24 AM

I was also thinking young beatnik. Someone mentioned earlier, acting like a vagabond, but with money... I totally agree. That's what I think of when I think of the word Hipster. Like umm Harry Connick Jr. in that movie with the robot.
