American Honey

Wild Turkey Bourbon.

I bought a bottle today, and I have to say I'm impressed. I've been known to sip the odd Makers Mark in my time, but I think this is the best bourbon I've every sipped. Mind you, it does say it's a liquer blend, so that probably accounts for something, but still, it's a nice drop.

I assume there's a few of you have taken a tipple of this one by now?

xoxoxoBruce 05-08-2010 06:19 AM

Sweet 75 proof liqueur?

skysidhe 05-08-2010 09:52 AM

I've never sampled Wild Turkey.

I have tried Pendelton and it's very smooth Canadian whiskey made right here.

squirell nutkin 05-08-2010 09:51 PM

Isn't Wild Turkey like Southern Comfort?

Both of which sound like euphemisms on a brothel menu. For all i know about such things.

Wild Turkey is just a bourbon. I like it in its original form, but this new version is very nice. It's basically just the standard bourbon mixed with a honey liquer.

Wild Turkey and So Co were what we drank in college dorms. Good stuff...barfy memories. I wish I hadn't ruined the taste for myself way back when.

Southern Comfort tastes like a less herbal, less sophisticated Drambuie. Based on bourbon. Nice over vanilla ice cream.

Shawnee123 05-10-2010 07:40 AM

Southern Comfort = Liqueur
Wild Turkey = So NOT liqueur.

Some of you suck at being alcoholics!

Same here. Yuck.

Shawnee123 05-10-2010 07:51 AM

I've never liked the smell or taste of whiskey. Don't know why, it turns my stomach and not from a bad experience or anything.

squirell nutkin 05-10-2010 09:03 AM

OK, let me rephrase my question. Is Wild Turkey sweetened bourbon the way Southern Comfort is sweetened whiskey?

Gravdigr 05-10-2010 12:32 PM

Uh-uh. :headshake

Wild Turkey American Honey is a 71 proof Bourbon-based liqueur.

squirell nutkin 05-11-2010 09:23 PM

So WT Am. Honey IS sweet (like So. Comfort) if it is a liquer.

Whatever, I want no part of sweet booze.

xoxoxoBruce 05-11-2010 09:34 PM

Yes, the naysayers are probably unaware that Wild turkey bottles several proofs (80, 90, 101, 108) and blends like American Honey.

Aliantha 05-11-2010 09:44 PM

It's not sweet like so co. It just has a richness of flavour and the aroma of honey is quite strong.

I'm not a so co fan.

xoxoxoBruce 05-11-2010 09:50 PM

But it's still sweeter than straight Wild Turkey bourbon. That's why it's a liqueur, and that's what he was referring to, I think.

Aliantha 05-11-2010 09:53 PM

Yes well that's probably right. I just don't want him to think it's really that sweet cause it's not. It just tastes smoother. A lot like drambui I thought.

xoxoxoBruce 05-11-2010 09:56 PM

But it doesn't curl your toes and shoot thunderbolts from your ears, like old school, Wild Turkey 101. :haha:

Aliantha 05-11-2010 09:57 PM

Nope, and that's exactly why I like it. lol

hee, hee. that's funny, shaw!

Shawnee123 05-12-2010 08:49 AM

It was confusing. I thought Ali had dubbed (regular old)Wild Turkey "American Honey." Then when the question was brought forth "is Wild Turkey like Southern Comfort" I was like...NO WAI!

Turns out, I missed the Ali part where she said it was a liqueur, or I might have googled it to see there is indeed a reasonable facsimile. Then I might have said WAI. But with the question being Wild Turkey vs SoCo...

Oh well, we could all use a little google, I suppose.

Drambuie is as sweet as syrup.
I don't like sweet booze.

I love this stuff. I hope they keep making Wild Turkey American Honey, or at least let me know if they're intending to stop so I can lay in a supply. I tried it when I was looking for an equivalent to a British honeyed whisky that a friend brought back from Tintagel (or someplace else mystical in England).

Mnah, you put it on vanilla ice cream, then. Ya don't like it as booze, you may prefer it as a dessert topping.

My own favorite would be Blanton's Single Barrel
