Hiding in the basement....

Tornado Warning  I want to be in bed, I'm tired

HungLikeJesus 06-05-2010 10:03 PM

Watch out for that rat behind the furnace. You can see where he's been sharpening his teeth on the concrete.

monster 06-05-2010 10:09 PM

They're saying the safest place to be is The Cellar, so here we are....

monster 06-05-2010 10:10 PM

Oh bollocks, now they're saying to expct more warnings during the night.....

.....Possible rotation spotted almost overhead.....

lumberjim 06-05-2010 10:13 PM

i hope you guys are ok

monster 06-05-2010 10:29 PM

OK that one passed immediately replaced by another.

I have my priorities straight, though .....family, cats, weather radio, computer, beer......

monster 06-05-2010 10:55 PM

latest warning expired, left the kids camped out in the basement -we're on watch until 5am, they're knackered, I'm not brave enough to keep waking them up

monster 06-05-2010 11:14 PM

Sirens going nuts again.... but it's not due for another 20 mins, so beest is finishing his war game on the Wii and I'm in The Cellar like they say I should be.....

Some pretty fucking awesomw Thunderstorms going on outside......

HungLikeJesus 06-05-2010 11:21 PM

It's seems appropriate, having a monster hiding in the basement.

monster 06-05-2010 11:24 PM

indeed. current warning is in effect until 1am, but storm not actually due here until 12:40 ish, so we're hanging out upstairs for a bit longer like the daredevils we are.....

monster 06-05-2010 11:36 PM

Strong rotation overhead, apparently (yes, we're back in the basement)

lumberjim 06-05-2010 11:56 PM

here, hold on to me. I'm really fucking heavy.

monster 06-06-2010 12:13 AM

thanks, lj

we can leave the basement now, but beest has fallen asleep. There's one more nasty due in about an hour, it doesn't look as dodgy as the last three but will probably still be a siren fuckfest. I wants me some bed.

zippyt 06-06-2010 12:22 AM

Hang tough Monnie and family !

Cloud 06-06-2010 12:30 AM

eek! very scary.

Aliantha 06-06-2010 06:07 AM

I hope everything goes your way monster and beest and family. I can't imagine what it's like to have to deal with that kind of threat, although we did have a couple of tornadoes last week pretty close to our place. It's been unknown in our area before.

I think the end is nigh!

Pico and ME 06-06-2010 09:20 AM

That system must have went north of us here. I almost didnt want to go to bed knowing it was coming. Im glad you guys survived it!

HungLikeJesus 06-06-2010 09:28 AM

We don't know that yet. Calling all monsters - report in to the Cellar.

monster 06-06-2010 09:36 AM

heehee we're here. We left the sprogs in the basement and went to bed. Either there wasn't another warning or we slept right through it. It's not scary so much as annoying. A large part of us wants to carry on and ignore them because the chances of there actually being a tornado are very small, but we have kids and they know they drill and it would be like trying to make them cross the road when the red man is showing. Besides, it was all one huge adventure for them.

Shawnee123 06-06-2010 09:45 AM

A tornado touched down in central Illinois yesterday.

I guess the storm mostly missed us too: I kept hearing the rumblings of thunder but mostly we just got rain.

Also last night, I was hearing the "thump thump thump" of music and I think it was from a local catholic church festival's band (for some years that band would have been my ex's band) playing the typical saturday night drunken party...but I could hear it from clear across town.

Glad the beestmonster's are OK. It would be an adventure for a kid! They probably woke up and said "Awwww, is that IT?"

Wishing tornadoes to go their way... is not very nice. :eyebrow:

monster 06-06-2010 04:15 PM

Tornados touched down 20 miles south of us and damaged Cabela's and the Splash Universe water park in Dundee. Also a nearby Nuclear power plant took some bulding damage.

Shawnee123 06-06-2010 07:15 PM

I was telling my mom this story and she asked me if I mentioned my older brother, having heard the tornado warning, was sitting in the basement with his football helmet on and a sheet over him. He was probably about 11 years old.

Our basement wasn't "finished" but it was good in a pinch. It was where I met my first giant spider.

You just reminded me that there's a giant spider, SOMEWHERE, near my bed...

Now I can't sleep 'til I find it. :thepain:

Cloud 06-06-2010 07:20 PM

so, supposed to be sunny and ungodly hot all day today, right? I wake up from my nap at 5:30 and . . . it's dark! (okay, darkish, but def not sunny).

My first thought was --TORNADO! We've had only one tornado scare in the 25 years I've been here. Now I'm skeered. I blame da Cella!

(apparently just a thunderstorm and "blowing dust" tho)

Never given spider a try... Well, I suppose, as a child, I have, after roasting it, but... no.

I suppose I'd give it a try, but not a house spider. Those big, hairy, beastly spiders.

They're supposedly very good for you, and rather tasty, too!

Griff 06-06-2010 07:31 PM

The front has passed us in PA now. We lost 30 plus degrees in the time it took to drive home from Jersey.

am hoping we lose 30 degrees as well.

Dawn breaking - looking good!

Tulip 06-07-2010 11:23 AM

Glad to hear you and your family is okay, Monster. I just read the article about the damages tornadoes did in Ohio. Sad.

monster 06-23-2010 08:10 PM

Tornado sirens went off while we were at the pool..... bike dhome as fast as we could..... it's going to be one of those years! need to head for the basement in the next 15 minutes or so.

squirell nutkin 06-23-2010 08:16 PM

How is a Tornado like a redneck divorce?

Either way, someone's gonna lose a trailer.

monster 06-23-2010 08:26 PM

har.

monster 06-23-2010 08:43 PM

starting to sound pretty rough out there. we're in the basement, the crap was forecast to hit right about now, with any luck we'll be done in 10 minutes or so

monster 06-23-2010 09:06 PM

tornado touchdown a few miles south, stuck here for another 45 mins.....

TheMercenary 06-23-2010 09:11 PM

I love a good midwestern storm. Glad you all are safe and sound.

monster 06-23-2010 09:13 PM

so far... it's really freaking wild out there and another touchdown confirmed even closer (5 miles ish)

Cicero 06-23-2010 09:21 PM

You're freaking me out.

monster 06-23-2010 09:23 PM

It sounds like nothing I've ever heard before. I want to go look, but I'm a responsible parent and must stay safe with my offspring (and cats) ...yes, pet lovers, they're down here with us too...

Cicero 06-23-2010 09:23 PM

...........? Hello? Uhhh. Hope everything's OK.

jinx 06-23-2010 09:24 PM

Next time set up the vid camera before you go down

monster 06-23-2010 09:25 PM

Our piscine friends are taking their chances upstairs, however.

Damn this storm is wild

monster 06-23-2010 09:26 PM

should do, jinx. until this point they've all been pretty lame...... so who knew...

monster 06-23-2010 09:28 PM

I have the camera down here

WHOA SHIT that was a freight-train-like wind sound...

Nirvana 06-23-2010 09:32 PM

At least you got to post about your storm! 90 mile an hour winds here again and I had to go buy gas to run my generator because yes folks I have no f64545ing power!
Whew glad I got that off my chest! :eyebrow:

monster 06-23-2010 09:40 PM

three touchdowns and a nearby active tornado, but no blip in power......sometimes cookie-cutter neighborhoods with their underground wiring have their positive points......

monster 06-23-2010 09:43 PM

oh! it's gone quiet. really quiet. like silent. weird. very weird

oh thunder, tg. that was scary, I preferred the noise -at least I knew what was happening.

We may be done.....

monster 06-23-2010 09:45 PM

YAY, we're done! A watch for a few hours, but we're done. Thanks all for going through this with us -a little concerning

jinx 06-23-2010 09:50 PM

Phew!

lumberjim 06-23-2010 09:51 PM

three touchdowns! 21-0!

monster 06-23-2010 10:01 PM

one is unconfirmed, may be only two...
back up now -maybe we should just live in the basement -took far longer to get everyone and everything back up than it did down -and the cats are still there, despite their initial objections...

monster 06-23-2010 10:08 PM

storms are still pretty wicked, I'mm'a heading out to watch....

HungLikeJesus 06-23-2010 10:55 PM

Make sure you take your bumbershoot.

WHOA! Put the car in PARK! You live near a Cabela's?
How awesome is that? I live near Orvis, but they are posers when it comes to offing real animals. Wow.

Have you met Marlin Perkins?

monster 06-24-2010 10:29 AM

I have no idea who Marlin Perkins is. yes, we live near a Cabella's -we're exit 37, they are exit 17. We often pass but rarely stop by. Too expensive.

squirell nutkin 06-24-2010 10:55 AM

SOrry the Marlin Perkins ref was too outdated. He was our David Attenborough until he died in the mid 80s.
He was a naturalist and host of "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom".

If you think Cabela's is expensive you should see Orvis. They've got several $25K and up engraved shotguns...
$250 hip flasks, etc. It's for people who are unable to spend enough money at regular stores.

and I was being ironic and a bit facetious.

monster 06-24-2010 11:03 AM

 yes, you can spend a lot on a little quite easily. Do all Cabela's have the indoor mountain and river?

lumberjim 06-24-2010 11:03 AM

We live 3o minutes from a Cabella's.

Ridiculous.

You want ALL the rednecks in one place on Sunday afternoon? That's where they are.
