Charrette

1 Attachment(s)
So, my city is having a charrette. I thought this was interesting, 'cause I've never heard of this. Apparently, a charrette is "an intensive planning session in which citizens, planners, and developers collaborate on a development."

The problem is we have this big ugly defunct copper smelting plant (ASARCO) which is smack dab in the middle of town. Toxic, ugly, smelly, mega-expensive to remediate (as in, billions of dollars); including a gigantic smoke stack tower visible from everywhere on my side of town, including my own porch. When it was built it was way out on the outskirts in the desert, but the town has grown up around it. The whole town would smell like sulfur. (Yes, the parallels to Hell have been made before). It's spawned all sorts of litigation, protests, and controversy. So, I guess now we are deciding what to do.

Hence, the charrette. Here's a lovely pic:

I like the barber pole painting theme.:right:

HungLikeJesus 06-06-2010 10:03 AM

I predict that some people will say it's a landmark and should be preserved.

Shawnee123 06-06-2010 10:12 AM

They should get giant women to use them as stripper poles.

GO PUT STUPID GOATSES IN YOUR OWN DAMN THREAD.

That's just gross and rude, and I'm going to request this thread be deleted.

Shawnee123 06-06-2010 10:29 AM

Yeah, chode, that wasn't appropriate. No offense, please don't take this wrong, but it was a bit off.

Sorry for starting the derailing of the thread, Cloud. :(

Do you know if you can go up in the towers? That would be interesting to see.

Cloud 06-06-2010 10:31 AM

I don't even know who the moderators are to ask, dammit.

ETA: okay, request sent.

Cloud 06-06-2010 10:48 AM

The public certainly can't. I suppose there's some maintenance access, but you wouldn't want to.

Shawnee123 06-06-2010 10:52 AM

I suppose not, but I'm always fascinated by spaces like that. I was thinking of HLJ saying some would want to declare it a landmark, and wondering if there was something interesting they could do along those lines.

HungLikeJesus 06-06-2010 11:01 AM

Maybe they could use the stack to mount a wind turbine.

Cloud 06-06-2010 02:01 PM

Just a note: I thanked DVC for removing the offensive pic and we're good. There's no doubt that the ASARCO stack is rather phallic, which I'm sure is what prompted his response.

I was really commenting on the cool new (for me) word and concept of "charrette." Has anyone ever heard this term?

HungLikeJesus 06-06-2010 02:29 PM

I've heard the term used as design charrette in the energy industry.

Cloud 06-06-2010 02:30 PM

kind of like a design storm, eh? cool.

Undertoad 06-06-2010 03:00 PM

Charette's was an art and drafting supply retailer. Out of business now.

gvidas 06-06-2010 03:54 PM

I've seen the term used (secondhand) in an architecture program to describe what is essentially a 1-2 day brainstorming session.

In the real world, the idea seems to be to bring together everybody who might be involved -- a bunch of developers, planners, politicians, etc -- and flesh out a few ideas, so that everybody is on a similar page.

The origin of the term is related to furious, working-to-the-last-minute efforts.

If I had to use a synonym, I'd go with something between "brainstorming session" and "design exercises."

"It was just a picture, grow up"

??? Grow up? This from you? "I'm so much younger than you are na-na-na-na-nar-nar"? (paraphrased from Crimson Ghost Birthday thread)

You don't think the lack of goatse and tubgirl on the site that has every internet meme going done to death is a hint that we don't go there anymore? I know, it's harder to spot unwritten rules -especially when you're a little light on the life experience- but that's one of them.

Cloud, turn it into a May Pole.

It wasn't Goatse... it was a picture that has already, on several occasions, been posted on this website.

Now, being so much older than I, shouldn't you see that it's wrong to hijack somebody's thread, when that somebody has already discussed things, with me, via private message, and come to a fair, happy conclusion, without the need for such an assaultive post, as yours?

Since when did age have anything to do with maturity, or, indeed, the phrase "grow up?" ;) Your post, as rude, and offensive as it is, is most certainly proof that age is NOT a factor, when it comes to the utterance of the phrase "grow up."

(Sorry, Cloud, for the public flogging. This is your thread, and does not deserve to be derailed by such a post... However, I felt that, seeing as monster decided to publicly post against something I had said, that, in turn, I had the same right to respond. If you so desire, I'll gladly edit/remove this post, as I did the picture, as I most certainly don't wish to cause you any offence. :))

As for the original topic... I actually did a little research into the origins of the word. It's quite interesting. The Wiki article that "gvidas" posted, has some of the interesting factoids about it, so, if you've not already, go check it out.

(I love how every word has a history, a second meaning. It makes language so... fun!)

Cloud 06-06-2010 06:29 PM

language is fun! okay, for some of us. (nerd!alert!)

and, I'm sure fun was had by the orangutan--just not by me in this particular instance. DVC was a gentleman about it, so as far as I'm concerned, fin.

I love language, in all forms... does that make me a nerd? (Glad to be one, if so!)

Also, I do wonder if the orangutan was actually having fun... it looked mighty uncomfortable.

(I'm glad you can have a little laugh at it, though, and you handled the matter with great decorum, too, which I am very thankful for, as, like I said... I honestly did not intend to offend, I was merely making a comical connection between the pole, and a previous post.)

(Would you like me to edit my previous post? Arguments of such a nature never end well, and there's so little point, to them. Just felt the urge to defend myself against it, is all... but it's not worth it, if it'll just cause a scene.)

squirell nutkin 06-06-2010 07:18 PM

Scrap it all and sell it to the Chinese. Manufacture it into kid's rice bowls first if need be.

Nope. An asshole needs to be called one and thread drift is an occupational hazard

I guess people really don't "grow up" with age. Hm, interesting. (Well, some people.)

You're welcome to take this to PM. I shan't sully this thread with further flogging of your poorly conceived attempts at insulting me... If you can come at me with something more age appropriate, or, at least somewhat intelligent, I'll respond, via PM. Your childish attempted assault, though, is only offending my intelligence, and nothing more.

Toxins included?

Good idea - Give 'em a taste of their own damn medicine!

(They can spare the kids, which will, in turn, make their country less over-populated, which will help cut poverty, which will generate a better social feel, which will, in turn, help create a better balanced Government, which will help turn China into a better, more productive, welcome member of the industrial world!)

(So, by killing their children... we'll be doing them a favour? :thumb: )

Cloud 06-06-2010 07:25 PM
