Aug 24, 2010: Drill Baby

Drill Baby is not a real baby, it's vinyl rubber, mohair, oil paint, and plaster over an aluminum armature.

http://cellar.org/2010/drillbaby.jpg

Drill Baby is tattooed with images of the BP offshore drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Oily Pelicans and Seagulls, Fish swimming in blackened water, a clipper ship with floating oil barrels, and the Virgin Mary-ish figure grasping a dripping gas nozzle.

And the point?

everyone needs a hobby.

The local Art Gallery has just bought a very similar piece. I took the students to look at another exhibit yesterday. They happened to wander past one in the same style and I couldn't drag them away from it.

BP = Baby Porn?

spudcon 08-24-2010 08:12 AM

S/M baby porn

ToastyOhs 08-24-2010 09:29 AM

Sailor baby says, "I end up with a new tattoo every time I pass out around those BP guys"

dmg1969 08-24-2010 11:28 AM

Seems just a little extreme to voice your position on BP. Why a tattooed baby? Who actually thought that would be way to get their point across?

Spexxvet 08-24-2010 12:12 PM

Tattoos marring the pristine flesh of a baby symbolizes oil marring the pristine environment of the Gulf.

Maybe.

dmg1969 08-24-2010 12:15 PM

I admit that I'm no artist. But I would have come up with something like a sea turtle crying tears of oil or something like that. But hey...that's why I'm not an artist.

There was an odd scene in The Sopranos where Ralph blackmailed a Native American by threatening to publicise the fact that that guy was actually Italian.

Maybe.

How pristine can the gulf be with Castro rotting in the middle of it?

How pristine is the gulf with thousands of rigs in it?

Or Tony Hayward's lunch covered in whale sperm.

Art. I don't get it.

It's a play on words, from the widely-repeated Republican mantra, "Drill, baby, drill," first uttered by Michael Steele, then popularized by Sarah Palin during the Vice Presidential debate.

Drill Baby can't compete with Oogachucka Baby.

Castro is contained, not leaking into the ocean.

Ah.. Thank you. At least I understand it now.
Still lame in my opinion.

Clodfobble 08-25-2010 08:59 AM

Personally, I find the oil stuff irrelevant, but the baby itself creeps me right the hell out. It looks too real, and too dead.

Went to the art gallery again today. The sculpture bought by the local gallery is called Big Mother. It's a primate with highly developed mammary glands standing up and holding a baby. Like Drill Baby, the skin and hair looks completely real.

ZenGum 08-26-2010 11:22 PM

Drill baby would be cooler if it were constantly turning like a drill bit.

Big Mother is #$%&ing freaky. And very well presented.

No, Drill Baby isn't drilling, it's being drilled. That's the whole point.

Juniper 08-27-2010 12:27 AM

Creepy!

Happy Monkey 08-28-2010 06:26 PM

Is "drilled" slang for tattooed?

Happy Monkey 08-28-2010 06:31 PM

Big Mother looks like a Mystic from Dark Crystal.

I don't think so, at least not that I've heard.
The baby represents the Gulf of Mexico, the tattoos represent the sullying by BP. Kind of a tree hugger position, considering we've been crapping on that particular baby for hundreds of years, but that's his statement on the oil spill.
