Need Trumpet

6th-grade Hector wishes to continue with the trumpet, so we need to buy him one. A B-flat student trumpet in decent nick. Craigslist and Ebay are pitiful pickings right now. Knowing that the cellar is a musical place, I thought I'd ask...... if any of all y'all have one lying around that your kids no longer need and you haven't got round to selling, please PM. Am looking to pay as little as possible (of course), but willing to pay market value as long as I'm dealing with someone I can trust/bitch up if they sell me a lemon. Newbs need not apply.

thanks :)

I THINK I still have my trumpet. Will look around for it tonight. As I recall, I had two mouth pieces (one a nice Bach 3C) and two mutes also. Will PM if I find it.

thanks. I may have found one on craigslist now ....typical.... but we'll see, those people lie, you know.....

If the craigslist doesn't work out, check around with the other parents/band director. They might know someone who has one for sale.

You could always rent for a month or two while keeping an eye on craigslist and ebay for a decent deal.

We went the used rental route for a year with my daughter's trombone, and when she decided she wanted to do it again, it was mid-summer and I had time to look on ebay. Bought a decent used on off e-bay and spent less for it than one years worth of rent on her first trombone.

I thought craigslist was strictly for finding hookers???

Hookers learn their skills practicing with a trumpet. That's why you want to be sure to clean a craigslist trumpet trumpet before you use it.

I bought two bicycles and a car bike rack from craigslist in the last month. I thought it was a bit odd they were all being sold by women in high heels, fishnet stockings, and extremely skimpy dresses, who followed up the transaction by asking, "Is there anything.... ELSE?...I can interest you in?"

Maybe that explains it.

band director says craigslist, says two/three months rental is more than a decent used student trumpet should be ($40-$50/month!)

Nice thing about craigslist is there's no shipping to pay, and you can inspect it in person. Bring some alcohol wipes for the mouthpiece so Hector won't be grossed out when he tries it.

In that case the thread should read: Need Strumpet

Pawn shops might be worth a look too. That's where my first clarinet came from.

These guys *SEEM* ok. Picking up my son's Piccolo from them in 20 days :) <--- have to wait for a paycheque first.
There has only been 3 negative feedbacks in a year, and one was shipping times (they DO state up to a month, unless you upgrade)

Has Trumpet!

I hope we made a good call. I went back onto Craigslist and followed up all the old trumpets that were still there that seemed suitable and got a bite from a month old yamaha ad (no pic). I got the owner to send pics and Hector's band leader (who had been rejecting everything -including the trumpet so generously offered by a dwellar)) said "that's the one, go for it" So we did. Ideally the band leader wanted us to leave a deposit and take it for her to try, but that wasn't going to happen. She told us what to look for, hector played it a bit and it sounded OK and there's only one little dent.

fingers crossed for when the band leader sees it tomorrow.....

thanks all for your help

classicman 09-14-2010 08:13 PM

Now you can tell Hector "Go blow your horn!" and actually mean it.

monster 09-14-2010 08:31 PM

"Go clean your valves"

classicman 09-14-2010 08:35 PM

Thats even better

monster 09-14-2010 08:56 PM

Have you used your trumpet snake today?

xoxoxoBruce 09-14-2010 09:30 PM

Why were the previous choices rejected by the band fuhrer, wrong sound (B♭), wrong color, not shiny enough?

squirell nutkin 09-14-2010 11:19 PM

too many notes?

limey 09-15-2010 01:53 AM

It is a fallacy that a student player can get by with a crap instrument - really they need the best instruments as it's hard enough learning to play the damn thing without the instrument itself tripping you up with inbuilt faults.
Bandmaster probably knew that certain brands of trumpet are hopelessly out of tune with themselves making playing them a nightmare for anyone, let alone a beginner.

^wss

Band leader also says that very few student level trumpets -even the good ones- age well if left unused and unmaintained. So if it's old it needs to look really shiny and clean and in use (tip for sellers)

Pete Zicato 09-15-2010 10:28 AM

You know about the spit valve right? Hector should keep a hand-towel in his case.

monster 09-15-2010 11:47 AM

yes, thanks
