What Has Zippyt Done Now? It's Raining Birds in Ark.

EEBE, Ark.-- Friday night, ringing in the New Year took on a whole different meaning for the citizens of Beebe. Around 11:30 p.m., enforcement officers with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission began getting reports of dead black birds falling from the sky in the city limits of Beebe.

Officers estimated that over 1,000 birds had fallen out of the sky over the city before midnight. Most of the birds were dead, but some were still alive when officers arrived. The blackbirds fell over a one-mile area in the city. AGFC wildlife officer Robby King responded to the reports and found hundreds of birds. "Shortly after I arrived there were still birds falling from the sky," King said. King collected about 65 dead birds that will be sent to the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis.

The AGFC has flown over the area to gauge the scope of the event. There were no other birds found outside of the initial area.

AGFC ornithologist Karen Rowe said that strange events similar to this one have occurred a number of times across the globe. "Test results usually were inconclusive, but the birds showed physical trauma and that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail," Rowe said.

Another scenario may have been that New Year's Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area may have startled the birds from their roost. The birds may have died from stress.

Rowe said that it didn't appear as though the birds died of any poisoning or other event. "Since it only involved a flock of blackbirds and only involved them falling out of the sky it is unlikely they were poisoned, but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin," she said. Testing will begin on Monday.

The City of Beebe has hired U.S. Environmental Services to begin the cleanup and dispose of the dead birds. The environmental firm will go door-to-door to pick up the birds that are still in yards and on roof tops.

was this near the tornado that hit Cincinatti AK?

TheMercenary 01-02-2011 07:30 PM

Wonder if they hit a down draft or a major temp change, hail, or just a lightning strike in the sky?

Or maybe Zippy is playing with laser bird killing to perfect his Dove count. :)

I heard there were over 5,000 dead birds witrh trauma to their organs. Now there's a big fish kill only affecting drum. Weird. I think Zik was messing around with his plasma gun again. He just can't handle his znoyg without getting into trouble.

That's why I wear my tin foil had. I don't want my internal organs traumatized

zippyt 01-03-2011 08:44 PM

That was an accident, Trigger slipped , guess this plasma gun Really DOES have some range to it !!!!!

Big Sarge 01-04-2011 01:21 PM

There reports of dead birds in La & Ky. Gravdigr - have you been playing with zippyt's plasma gun???

Shawnee123 01-04-2011 01:25 PM

Have you been playing with zippy's plasma gun, or is he just happy to see you?

ba DUM dum! ;)

Shawnee123 01-04-2011 01:38 PM

And by the way: bullshit to the "fireworks" speculation. Because, like, we've been setting off fireworks for hundreds of years, but there have never been reports of two states experiencing thousands of birds plunging to their death. But ALL OF A SUDDEN...

Or it could have been hail. We've rarely had high-atmosphere hail, or lightning. Birds fall to death in droves way more often than we have lightning or fireworks.

I mean, seriously, when is the last time you saw any birds on either New Year's Eve or Independence Day? They usually stay out of the way, right? They must sit at home grumbling about being stuck inside due to human revelry.

I smell cover-up. :tinfoil:

Big Sarge 01-04-2011 11:43 PM

It's the aliens!!! Most folks don't realize that "Predator" was a documentary filmed in my back yard.

Clodfobble 01-04-2011 11:50 PM

You should really consider bringing in some landscapers.

xoxoxoBruce 01-04-2011 11:54 PM

They found another flock a few hundred miles south.

ZenGum 01-05-2011 06:03 AM

I'm so glad it's only 2011. This is getting creepy.

Shawnee123 01-05-2011 08:34 AM

Sigh. On December 24th 2011 I hope the aliens will let me log in just to say "I told you so" to the Cellar.

Anyway, this bird thing, it's like the anti-Hitchcock. "Oh my GAWD the birds are coming. *splat splat splat* Oh, never mind."

Somebody has been peeing in the creek again:
VICTORIA — Horrified nature-lovers at Goldstream Provincial Park watched as the Goldstream River turned bright green late Wednesday afternoon. The fluorescent green colouring appeared to start about 500 metres on the Victoria side of the entrance to the park and, over the course of an hour, the substance flowed down into the environmentally sensitive estuary. By 5:30 p.m. the river, known for its dramatic salmon runs, eagles and other wildlife, was back to its normal colour. Ministry of Environment teams were immediately sent to the area to investigate and members of Langford Fire Department collected samples for analysis.

Undertoad 01-05-2011 05:01 PM

The followup story says they figured out it was something called Fluorescein, which is not very harmful and was used several years in the 60s to color the rivers green in Chicago on St. Patty's Day.

Clodfobble 01-05-2011 05:06 PM

They were still dyeing the river green for St. Patrick's Day at least as late as 1998. I guess they use something else now?

Undertoad 01-05-2011 05:09 PM

Yeah the Wikipedia entry says
Quote:

In 1966, environmentalists forced a change to a vegetable-based dye to protect local wildlife.[citation needed]

TheMercenary 01-05-2011 05:11 PM

That's pretty dramatic.

Lamplighter 01-05-2011 06:17 PM

It's used routinely by Public Health type people to follow water being
flushed down a toilet to find leaks and septic tanks that are not working properly.

The fluorescein gives off a green color under artificial or natural UV light,
so daylight conditions make if particularly visible.

Of course, kids like to play pranks too.

They're reporting 8,000 doves have died in Italy.

Clodfobble 01-08-2011 03:29 PM

Here is a Google map with a link to all the mass animal deaths reported in just the last three weeks. Each location is linked to the news story about the animal death.

I don't know what this is, but it seems pretty safe to say it isn't fireworks or random hailstorms.

Trilby 01-08-2011 04:14 PM

It's End Times~!

Not to worry, unless you start seeing Foxy Loxy sneaking about.

Sadly, I don't think it was...:o

Necklace? She just doesn't know how to use anal beads.

Seriously, though, the rambling "pattern" she sees looks very much like the symptoms of a mental illness.

xoxoxoBruce 01-13-2011 09:20 AM

Not mental illness, she just realizes that to her core audience, it doesn't matter if she says anything rational.
Wing it, baby, it's a living.

Dead blackbirds fall again in Ark. town where thousands fell from sky last year
Quote:

Thousands of dead blackbirds rained down on a town in central Arkansas last New Year's Eve after revelers set off fireworks that spooked them from their roost, and officials were reporting a similar occurrence Saturday as 2012 approached.

Officer John Weeks said the first reports of "birds on the streets" came around 7 p.m. as residents celebrated the year's end with fireworks in their neighborhoods.

"We started shutting down fireworks," he said. "We're working on cleaning up the birds now."

He said police were working with animal control workers and others to remove the birds and determine a death count.

"We're not sure if they're going to continue to fall throughout the night. I can't tell you," Weeks said.

Scientists say the loud cracks and booms from celebratory fireworks likely sent the birds into such a tizzy that they crashed into homes, cars and each other before plummeting to their deaths last New Year's Eve.

The birds landed on roofs, sidewalks, streets and fields.
One struck a woman walking her dog. Another hit a police cruiser.

ZenGum 01-05-2012 07:44 PM
