Question for the Guys

I do readings for my friends just for fun from the I Ching or Chinese Book of Changes. I don't push this on anyone. I just mention that I do it if the subject of the Tarot or reading the cards or other methods of fortune telling happens to come up.

So tonight my friend Jim calls me and asks if I'll do a reading for him. Yeah, no prob. Come on over. I figured he was going to ask me about a career move or relocating to a new town - two subjects he's been talking about lately.

To my surprise, he said that he's considering starting to date again and he wanted to know if that would work out well for him or not. He said he has two women in mind. He told me that one was a cashier at the local grocery store, but he didn't say who the second was. Jim and I have been friends for over a year and have a lot in common. Lately, he's been calling me more often and wanting to get together, but we've never been on what you'd call a date. But he's started asking me if I wouldn't like to take a trip with him somewhere out of this little town where all people do is gossip.

Do you think his fortune telling question was his little way of testing the waters with me? Or was he just trying to get the feminine perspective from his old pal Sam as to whether women still think he's hot?

I just played it cool, but, as a matter of fact, I'd be willing to take things up another notch and see what happened. So what do you guys think?

Sperlock 02-14-2011 11:36 PM

It could very well be a testing the waters. I know I would feel very wary if I had an interest in a woman that I am friends with, as I don't want to ruin a friendship because of a romantic interest in them, so would tread very carefully.

plthijinx 02-15-2011 12:59 AM

yeah i agree. he's testing the waters. cashier is prolly a decoy to see if you get jealous. but if you guys get along like that and have similar interests go for it. life is short. live it with someone. sucks being alone.

Spexxvet 02-15-2011 08:33 AM

He's romantically interested in you. Fer sher.

monster 02-15-2011 09:04 AM

I'm not a guy, but I agree with them.

Are you absolutely sure he's not a dick-head when it comes to relationships, though? Before you become another morsel? Look after yourself.

Gravdigr 02-15-2011 09:05 AM

Ask him out. You should know by now, if you want something, sometimes you have to take it.

But I completely see the other side of the coin, too. I'm in the exact situation you describe. I'm in love with a very, very good friend, and I know she loves me, but I'm pretty sure she's not in love with me. We've known each other for 12-15 years. We've been telling each other I love you for about 10 years, and for a few months now we've fooled around now and then. But, I'm terrified of telling her how I really feel, for fear of messing up the friendship.

Don't wait for him, make your move.

monster 02-15-2011 09:07 AM

...and yeah, grav's right, you probably need to make a move if you want to give it a shot.

but BE CAREFUL!

Can anyone ever really know that for sure? I'm wary with my track record, but he's not my usual irresistable loser with horrible narcissistic issues whom I fall madly in love with within days if not hours. He's been married twice, both times for nearly 20 years which is not that bad for a man of 57 in this day and age.

I haven't noticed him getting any frantic calls from females when I'm around. And he doesn't have 167 female "friends" on FaceBook like some I could name.

He comes from a working class family in central Colorado and started out as a cowboy and then a coal miner until he decided to quit the mines and go to college when he was in his 30's. He has a BA in psychology and is working on a Master's in Administration.
He seems hard working and smart, as well as kind.

Sure, I could be singing the blues at any time around the corner, but I don't get that fatal attraction vibe from him that I chased in so many men when I was younger.

Who knows? Maybe he's my long lost "senior cowboy." LOL!

Oh, and thanks to everyone for your input, as always!

Shawnee123 02-15-2011 11:30 AM

He looks good on paper! (touches computer screen) HEY that's not paper.

Seriously, he's working on a master's degree, he's had long-term relationships, you see him as being on the up and up, AND you started out as friends (I can tell you that it is possible to stay friends after starting out friends...even after getting married to each other and divorced...I am living proof of that, just to counteract the "you will ruin the friendship" thing) which I think is so important.

I think it sounds promising, Sam. Best O' Luck! :)

Spexxvet 02-15-2011 11:36 AM

Does he have a car?;)

Well, like they say in the Army, "The great Prince issues commands, founds states, vests families with fiefs, inferior people should not be employed."

;)

Gravdigr 02-15-2011 12:44 PM

Yes, plus 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 acres out in the country, plus 2 very tame horses. Very nice place.

The cars have AC and heat GD - don't get carried away!

And Shawnee, find your own guy, you little claim jumper!

It's a line from Nick Danger, SamIam should get the joke even if she hasn't heard Nick Danger. (Depending what translation of the IChing she uses)

Somewhere in not-too-distant Cellar history, Bruce, UT, Flint or somebody made just a passing reference to a truck in one of their posts, and some of us latched on to the truck, instead of the post. "How many miles are on that truck?" "I'm not selling my truck." "Does the truck have leather?" "Enough with the damn truck." "What kind of tires are on the truck?" Stuff like that...Hence, the car questions...

What kind of stereo do these cars have?

Undertoad 02-19-2011 03:38 PM

That was Flint, and I'm still interested in the truck, Flint, if ya haven't sold it yet.

wolf 02-19-2011 11:34 PM

SamIAm, I don't want to be the one bursting your bubble of hope, but I think you're "the girl buddy."

SamIam 02-20-2011 12:47 AM

I don't know what I am. I paid more attention to Jim than usual this week because I was frankly curious, and I also had a couple of long talks with him just on life in general. He's a likeable guy and all, but the more I consider it, he's really not BF material for me. I'll be happy to remain the buddy and wish him well in his quest.

Griff 02-21-2011 03:29 PM

He doesn't drive a Nissan Frontier by any chance?

footfootfoot 02-21-2011 04:17 PM

Is it Frontier or More Fronty? I can never remember if there is a rule about that.

SamIam 02-21-2011 10:23 PM

Do you guys think I can get a decent used Toyota for $7.000.00? ;)

plthijinx 02-23-2011 08:05 PM

someone today walked up our driveway....

Hispanic dude: Hola? Hola? aneee one aqui?

me out my bedroom window upstairs: yes? how can i help you?

dude: you want (unintelligible)?

me: que? preguntar en español. (ask me in spanish, or something of that effect)

dude: oh hablas espanol? ok. es esta camioneta para la venta? (is this truck for sale?)
