There ought to be a better way....

to secure a toilet to the floor/flange/waste pipe. The whole wax ring, bolts that have to fed up through holes in the toilet system sucks.

they can send a man to the moon...

The way the seats attach isn't much better. You have to have Edward Plierhands to get in there.

Fernco wax free toilet seal

Doesn't work well on old cast iron though. Too rough.

Waste goes out the back in the UK. Totally different fixings. We were somewhat surprised the first time we had to deal with this here. Wax? Seems like something they might have used on the ark! We used those wax-free jobbies, seem to have done the trick so far.....

I recently re-tiled my bathroom, which made the floor almost an inch thicker. At the hardware store they told me to stack two wax rings to fill the gap. It's like putting a second o-ring on the space shuttle.

I'm awaiting calamity.

plthijinx 03-29-2011 07:13 PM

ok. i got this. wait a minute. ok. been drinkin' since off work. err well got home but the system works well. what problem are you having? me be cornfused.

infinite monkey 03-29-2011 07:15 PM

The old waste pipe ended at the plywood subfloor. I had to build up the tile so it would be at the same level as hardwood floors that we were getting put in in the hallway. This meant that the toilet, sitting on the tile, wouldn't quite reach a single wax ring, so I had to stack a second one on top, kind of like a double cheeseburger.

infinite monkey 03-29-2011 07:23 PM

you sure do paint a picture, HLJ.

plthijinx 03-29-2011 07:31 PM

oh ok. but you made it work then? only other alternative is bust up tile, concrete and pipe to extend the flange.

be glad it's only march and not july!

now. get back to work.

zippyt 03-29-2011 08:44 PM

HLJ there is a Kit you can get at Lowes for that there are 1/8" 1/4" and i think like 3/8" spacers , gaskets and all
you line up the spacer with the old ring , drive a screw Thru the Old pvc ring raiseing the new ring up to floor height ,
then install as per normal

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if it starts leaking.

It's not the wax ring that's the main problem for me. It's getting the bolts fed up through the flange, then getting them to stay there while maneuvering the toilet so that the holes are above the bolts, then lowering the toilet without pushing the bolts down. sux.

infinite monkey 03-30-2011 09:05 AM

Ugh. I wish my buddies would redo my bathroom floor soon. It's always something: they have the particle board or whatever at my place. Now one of them is working in MD and it may never get done. Also, I have yet to buy the wax worm, I mean ring.

zippyt 03-30-2011 09:20 AM

Spex , in the kit for the toilet ( all the bolts , washers , nuts , caps , etc,,,) there are a few plastic flat washers ( they may be clear )
put the bolts thru the flange ,
slide the flat washers Over the bolts , this Should hold them in place
I guess you Could use rubber bands , that Might work

Rubber bands! Great idea. :litebulb:

I just replaced the wax ring, so I don't have a kit - just reusing the old hardware.

glatt 03-30-2011 09:28 AM

I agree. Those plastic washer help. It's still a tricky procedure sometimes. I've done it easily before, and then there have been times when a stubborn bolt keeps falling over just as I'm trying to set the bowl down.

I agree that the way toilets are installed seems to be really archaic and could use updating. You know, in the olden days, the porcelain horn of the toilet actually went down below the level of the floor surface and into the drain pipe. The wax ring was just there to hold gasses back. It didn't have to withstand any water pressure, because the water went from the porcelain horn and right into the drain pipe. Now, that porcelain horn is much shorter and points to the drain pipe but doesn't enter it. Doesn't really make sense.

I had to do the double wax ring on a toilet in our 1926 vintage home. That was 9 years ago and it's still holding.

I don't like cheeseburgers anymore.

HungLikeJesus 03-30-2011 07:14 PM

That's odd - now I want a double cheeseburger.

kerosene 03-31-2011 03:57 PM

Hows about you order a regular cheeseburger and I order a regular cheeseburger and I give you mine. Then you can just stack them together and have both.
