Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito Acquitted.

Wow.

(CBS/AP)

Last Updated 3:55 p.m. ET

PERUGIA, Italy - American student Amanda Knox, who was convicted by an Italian court for the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher, was acquitted today by an appeals court.

Her murder conviction in the 2007 slaying of her roommate Meredith Kercher was thrown out by the jury, and she was ordered immediately released from prison.

Knox collapsed in tears after the verdict was read out Monday.

Her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also found not guilty.

Knox and Sollecito had been convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. She was found in a pool of blood and covered by a duvet the following day.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, an Ivorian man. They all denied wrongdoing.

DanaC 10-03-2011 03:21 PM

Really pleased about this. It looked such a shaky conviction.

I feel sorry for the Kercher family, but they were let down by the investigating officers.

Lamplighter 10-03-2011 03:28 PM

Me being cynical...particularly since I did not follow the trial at all.

Raffaele chose wisely having such a good-looking girlfriend.
I doubt the media would not have paid attention to a less gifted co-defendant.

classicman 10-03-2011 03:44 PM

I did not follow the trial much either. I did read up on it a bit but not that much.
The gist of what I saw was that there was little evidence that she was really guilty. They had DNA of hers at the scene. No shit, she lived there.
I also did not know that the BF was also a part of this appeal. Nothing I read even mentioned him.

Sundae 10-03-2011 03:49 PM

Knox lied and acted in a very peculiar manner for someone who was innocent.
And her parents launched a smear campaign.

I'm really not sure she was guilty.
But it all tasted wrong in my mouth.
Honestly? I think Italian and American justice systems collided.
It knocked truth & honesty out of the window.

And yes, I feel for Kercher's family. Dead girl, full of promise, no answer.

glatt 10-03-2011 03:49 PM

I'm surprised. I figured she would grow old in prison. If I were her, I'd be on the first plane out of there.

Four days of very little sleep and intense and by all accounts highly manipulative interrogation can wrap a person up so they barely know what's true and what's not.

In this i have some minor experience, having been arrested on an arson charge and made to doubt my own story of events by the questioning that followed. To all intents and purposes I appearesd to 'lie' and change my story. Had it ever gone to court that would have played very badly against me. In fact the original story i told was mistaken, and the events I related had been coloured in my memory by things others had said ( I forgot that on this occasion I had actually left with everyone else, and had agreed with initial witness statements that said I'd left a little after the others, which was what i usually did).

Sundae 10-03-2011 04:03 PM

Shush.
Arsonist.

TheMercenary 10-04-2011 08:12 AM

Really great news, they really botched the investigation, she should have never been sent to prison.

footfootfoot 10-04-2011 08:22 AM

I an very happy for the young woman and her family. Hopefully, her nightmare is over.

DanaC 10-04-2011 08:34 AM

I never thought they were guilty. That whole demonic ritual angle that the investigation went with at first, then changed to a sex game gone wrong. It just seemed so over the top, and right from the get go it seemed like a circus.

footfootfoot 10-04-2011 08:42 AM

Not to mention the very obvious fact of none of Knox or Solecito's finger prints were in the room nor any of their DNA on her supposed rough sex ravaged body.

Helleaux?

I remind myself that it's only been a couple of hundred years since they put to death scientists who disagreed with the Catholic church and or pope and they still believe in Malocchio

DanaC 10-04-2011 08:54 AM

To be fair 3ft this isn't necessarily about the flaws o fthe Italian justice system as whole. but the conduct of particular parts of that system. By the same token, Texas has recently executed a man who was almost certainly innocent of the crime he was convicted of (Troy davis was he called?).

And in my own country we intermittently have a flurry of people being freed after serving a few years of a sentence having been convicted in an unsafe manner.

Georgia, happened here in my town, Savannah.

They should have commuted his conviction to Life in prison IMHO.

It seems that the British tabloids created a bunch of lurid fantasies out of whole cloth that then grew legs and ran. I don't really think that helped her case at all.

DanaC 10-04-2011 01:48 PM

Lurid fantasy is what we do best...

Sundae 10-04-2011 02:28 PM

The tabloids today referred to her as simply "Foxy" in their headlines. As in Foxy Knoxy in case your papers don't go for that sobriquet.

Then again, they call Madonna "Madge" as in short for Majesty, and it really got up her nose when she lived here. So they're not all bad.

'Cept those owned by the Dirty Digger of course.

Loved the Simpson's episode where Homer is forced to take Madge back to the States in return for the Queen's not prosecuting him for rear-ending her!

HA!

Nirvana 10-04-2011 04:33 PM

Never thought they were guilty. I find the Italian justice system very scary. They can hold anyone in jail for up to a year without charging them with a crime. Piss off the wrong cop and ....

I do like that the case is tried and all evidence is allowed to be re presented...must be necessary if they botch their investigations as routinely as they have this one..

tw 10-04-2011 07:31 PM

Amanda Knox is no different than outright lies that accused Saddam of 11 September, the obviously mythical WMDs, a victory in Afghanistan in 2003 that was really a surrender, Pond's Age Defying Cream, Listerine, Danon Yogurt's digitalis rectalitis for better digestion, plug-in surge protectors, fear of marijuana, smoke cigarettes to increase health, evil Arabs on mythical ‘sacred ground’ in Lower Manhattan, Gulf of Tonkin, diet soda, and even the new Daylight Savings Time. In every case, without exception, the myth was widely believed because so many entertain their emotions. Never learn how to think logically.

Most people are so uneducated as to believe what they are told to believe. Hype in Hitler's Rallies proved that Hitler was good for Germany. Gulf of Tonkin even 'proved' that 50,000 murdered American soldiers in Vietnam was good.

My father so loved advertising. Fun was to manipulate so many adults who still think like children. Who never achieve all levels of mental development.

In every case, facts found in comprehensive studies proved soundbytes were only brainwashing. Ie Pentagon Papers. But most only hear soundbytes. Cannot do what is necessary to be logical. So many even denied the Pentagon Papers due to their educational development.

Those educated in adolescent development and Epistemology understand that a child must achieve postskeptical rationalism to separate emotions (biases) from facts. Early adolescents achieve a mental ability called dogmatism or skepticism. This is when the adolescents learn facts have multiple interpretations. But then many adolescents only grasp one perspective; do ‘black and white’ thinking. Become either dogmatists or skeptics. We watch many who know what the Tea Party tells them to believe despite other more valid interpretations - dogmatists. Or knew the world was going to end earlier in the year. Others will even deny the Holocaust or Moon landing - skeptics. As noted by Rice in his book, "many people never outgrow this stage of reasoning." More than we want to believe.

Postskeptical rationalization is when absolute certainty, based in emotions, is replaced by learning how to discern hard facts. Research suggests that this mental ability starts with juniors in high school. Others do not begin this thinking process until well into college years. And again, many adults never achieve this ability at all. Many remain dogmatists or skeptics. Never get beyond mental abilities that usually emerge in early teenage years. Are easily manipulated by people such as my father because they never learn how to think. Those are the people who make advertising so much fun.

Does not matter how many years one spends in post graduate studies. An ability to separate hard facts from feelings is never achieved by many who cannot even see the difference between subjective and quantitative thinking.

For example, does power cycling an incandescent bulb cause premature bulb failure? Any layman who does not achieve the fourth level of mental development might quickly assume power cycling causes light bulb failure. Cannot separate a dogmatic conclusion, based only in observation, from logical thought.

Amanda Knox was railroaded by the uneducated. Supposedly, DNA on a knife that proved her guilt was only rye bread. This prosecutor is so dumb as to be awaiting jail time for his actions as a lawyer. Post graduate education does not mean he was educated. He entertained his biases rather then make conclusions from hard facts.

The problem is not just in Italy. In Norfolk VA, six sailors who did not even know one another were accused of gang raping and killing a woman. That conclusion proven by Virginal prosecutors because they railroaded a neighbor into accusing someone. Then used that accusation as reason to invent evidence. And to ignore other facts. Those uneducated lawyers truly believed their conclusions because and again, they never learned how to think logically. How to separate their emotions from facts. Same types also entertained emotions to believe Saddam had WMDs when facts and numbers all said otherwise.

The story of six sailor railroaded by Prosecutors is no different than what happened to Amanda Knox. Six Navy sailors were prosecuted for rape and murder that they could not possibly have done. Facts ignored by the most emotional made that fact obvious. PBS's Frontline (the same news service that made Saddam's WMD myths so obvious in four programs) exposed that railroading in The Confessions.

Yes, I said six. Two of the accused were so obviously innocent that even prosecutors were forced to drop charges. But not until after arresting those two by ignoring hard facts.

Americans who did the same uneducated reasoning also wasted almost 5000 American soldiers in Iraq - for the greater glory of their penis or other sex organs. The source of most thinking when one is so uneducated as to not separate emotions from facts. So many of us never achieve the fourth level of epistemological development - postskeptical rationalism.

A long list of scams exist due to so many uneducated adults. In every topmost example, even facts provided by the manufacturer say the product does not do what most people believe. And still, so many will buy Airborne as a cure to the common cold when the scam is that obvious. Defined as uneducated because some never achieve a fourth level of mental development. Cannot separate their biases from hard facts. Use subjective reasoning (also called junk science) to justify their irrational conclusions.

All are strongly encouraged to view the Frontline piece entitled The Confessions. It also explains why American are now surrendering their jobs to pay for $1 trillion wasted in Mission Accomplished. Many even deny why so many Americans are now suffering reduced living standards. Making them no different from prosecutors in Italy. Explained by epistemology.

Its ok tommy. Reread your first sentence and get back to me.
If you do not see the humor in that, then close the coffin and we'll throw the dirt on you tomorrow.

It was funny, the way he said it. It is also true (except for that Listerine part, I have to check that out, and the diet sodas). Amanda Knox's a "story" cause they can make you pay attention to it. Substance and facts are ... incidental. She's cute, she's a girl, she's "in trouble". Fuck, I had to search to find the boyfriend's name for the flippin thread title, he was practically Mrs Amanda Knox in the first several hits I found. But he's had exactly the same ordeal she has had. Tell me no.

no.

a test. Without scrolling up or peeking, write down the name of the boyfriend. I'll wait.

F*ck.

**I** couldn't do it and **I** wrote it in the first place.

My point is that Amanda Knox is a media phenomenon, not especially because of the facts of the case. She's a phenomenon because she's been made into one. Like how Sarah Palin was, for a short but scary time, a vice presidential candidate. For the same reason Ron Paul wasn't the close second place finisher in the Iowa Straw Polls, but instead we got headlines like Michele Bachmann wins with Romney in third place.

It's fucking media hype. tw just said it funny, that's all.

classicman 10-05-2011 11:24 PM

My point was that he got every one of his tire old talking points in one sentence.

I couldn't really care less about Amanda, nor whatshisname ;)

DanaC 10-06-2011 04:10 AM

One reason her boyfriend sank into the background was that the initial prosecution basically characterised him as entirely under the spell of Knox (the femme fatale).

From the perspective of the media though, she's more interesting. Not just because she's a chick, but also because she's an English-speaking American chick, caught up in a foreign justice system. That makes it inherently more interesting to American and British media and public.

I'll save you the trouble. There are conflicting studies. Listerine has done studies that show its mouthwash kills LOTS of germs growing in a petri dish. Other independently funded scientists did a study on Listerine use in the human mouth and found that it killed no more germs than simply rinsing with water did.

Since Listerine is meant as a mouth wash, and it (and all other tested mouthwashes) are no better than water in the mouth, tw has concluded that it's worthless. And Listerine can still advertise that it kills germs because they use the words "in vitro" instead of "in vivo."

But I like it because it's tingly.

Clodfobble 10-06-2011 07:55 AM

I like it because it makes Mr. Clod's breath smell good.
