Addictive personalities

Do you have one?

me -totally. That's why I don't gamble.

wolf 03-04-2012 06:24 PM

Oh, yeah. I dialed up here one day, and here I still am.

I have somewhere around 100 tarot decks, actively read with less than a dozen of them, and usually focus on three or four at a time.

I have a closet full of crocheted afghans. And scarves. And shawls. And mittens. And bags of various sizes. And penguins. Okay, so there's only one penguin, but it is crocheted.

I have a box of completed and to be completed beadwork.

I have a different box of unframed cross stitch projects.

I am so fucking glad I never tried cocaine. Or heroin.

elSicomoro 03-04-2012 06:30 PM

I smoked for 9 years. I have too much caffeine for my own good. Fortunately when I use pain pills, I don't have issues with them.

I might have some addiction issues.

wolf 03-04-2012 06:32 PM

I probably shouldn't mention my flirtation with Magic: The Gathering.

elSicomoro 03-04-2012 06:34 PM

I've been watching a lot of reality TV shows on cable lately...

Griff 03-04-2012 06:51 PM

yep.

Undertoad 03-04-2012 07:19 PM

I can taper off whenever I want!

I just don't want to, so shut up shut up!

Aliantha 03-04-2012 07:29 PM

I used to, but I've learned to control things a lot more now.

Still, it's a slippery slope. I try to keep away from the edge.

glatt 03-04-2012 08:14 PM

Where do you draw the line between addictive and compulsive? And if you can control your addiction/compulsion, does it mean you don't have one?

Aliantha 03-04-2012 08:33 PM

Yeah, that's what I was thinking glatt.

They say though that if you're an alcoholic, even if you haven't had a drink for 10yrs, you're still an alcoholic, so I guess maybe it doesn't matter?

footfootfoot 03-04-2012 09:03 PM

I think recurring visits to teh cellar are a case in point.

UT, your resume item that you've started the oldest, continuously run forum (or whatever the exact phrase is) is probably almost the same as saying you've introduced crack to a whole bunch of addictive personalities.

I can leave this forum whenever I want. I've logged off thousands of times...

infinite monkey 03-04-2012 09:05 PM

Hahahahaha!

I wish I could quit you! ;)

Undertoad 03-04-2012 11:02 PM

Yes, I will reveal today that the secret was connecting addictive personalities to OTHER addictive personalities.

elSicomoro 03-04-2012 11:09 PM

You've blown acid into our computers haven't you?

Addicted To Us

Your PC's on, but you're not home
Your mind is not your own
Your keyboard rattles, your mouse shakes
Another post is what it takes

You can't read, can only write
There's no doubt, you're uptight
Your body's fixed, you can't leave
Another post is all you need

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to us

You see the signs, but you don't heed
You're postin' at, a different speed
Your heart beats, in double time
Another post, and you'll be fine a one track mind
You can't be saved
The Cellar is all you crave
If there's a clone left for you
You don't mind if you do

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah
It's closer to the truth to say you can't get enough
You know you're gonna have to face it, you're addicted to us

Might as well face it, you're addicted to us
......Might as well face it, you're addicted to us
............Might as well face it, you're addicted to us ...

Clodfobble 03-05-2012 08:16 AM

I have the opposite of an addictive personality. My instinct is to compulsively throw things out if I don't use it frequently, and deny myself indulgence items because I don't really need them. I saw an episode of Law & Order once that claimed this behavior is still a subset of OCD, same-coin-different-side to being a hoarder. Many times I've regretted getting rid of things that I later needed, nevermind how mad Mr. Clod gets when I throw out something that belonged to him, so I've worked pretty hard to temper the behavior.

classicman 03-05-2012 08:51 AM

So what you are saying is that you're addicted to not being addicted. ;)

Aliantha 03-05-2012 04:14 PM

I'm a bit that way with clutter around the house. I'll chuck all sorts of stuff out, then wish I hadn't later.

I once read a book on fung shui that said getting rid of clutter is good for the mind, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it. That's not why I do it. It just gave me a good reason on how to explain why I do what I do. :) (no one around here is buying it though)

Gravdigr 03-05-2012 04:43 PM

There is nothing about Reality I like. I prefer my altered sense of reality to anything I've experienced in my life straight. The only reason I don't do all I want of anything, is that it will kill me. I know that if I stop keeping myself in check, Ima die. And, besides, who's getting hurt? Me. Nobody else. I don't have, nor do I want, a wife and/or kids. If I check out doing what I do, nobody's gonna be boo-hooing, nobody's left w/out an income, nobody has to wonder who's going to take care of them after I'm gone, nobody has to pay for a funeral or a grave.

If you actively enjoy whatever it is you do, and you have no desire whatsoever to stop for any reason, are you an addict?

This rings a big bell with me. I've kept shirts that I thought were too scruffy for the charity (=goodwill) and worn them myself because they're not worn out yet. I did manage to throw out an old baking tray on which everything stuck and buy a new one that doesn't stick at all, but it took a lot of persuading. (Baking is a lot more fun, now!).

I do watch the pervasive mania for
New
NOW
Whether I can afford it or not!!!!
with some bemusement, but I am probably too far the other way ...

Blueflare 03-06-2012 06:11 PM

I get addicted to habits, but not to stuff. I'll watch a full season of a TV show in a day, but I don't drink or smoke or own many possessions.
So... kind of?

Spexxvet 03-07-2012 08:08 AM

Maybe it's not personality

A recent study from Sweden found adopted children had roughly double the risk of drug abuse if their biological full- or half-sibling had similar issues.

Personality goes a long way.

Trilby 03-08-2012 02:05 PM

Ummmmm...

Yes.

BigV 03-08-2012 08:53 PM

some personalities go *all* the way.

I'm just sayin.

Rhianne 03-09-2012 04:40 PM

I can't wait for my treatment to start tomorrow. I'm addicted to counselling.
