Cellar IRL

Seems like there would be a thread for real-life Cellarites meeting up and hanging out...?

Pooka and I are up here in the Pacific Northwest, right now waiting for Mr. BigV and company to arrive. We mentioned to the folks that we are staying with that we are 'going out to dinner with some friends we only know from the internet' --which sounds weird, I guess when you put it that way.

I guess the only other Cellarites we've hooked up with was when we took our kids on a play date with clodfobble and crew.

Anyone have any interesting stories about meeting people from the Cellar in real life?

Undertoad 11-10-2012 07:19 PM

I sold a laptop to Jim last week;

Also last week, xoB came over and looked at my new place, and in particular my oil heat setup. He gave me advice on how to get it up and running, and heating only the zones I want to heat.

That was not a normal week though.

Undertoad 11-10-2012 07:19 PM

And of course none of that ever happened, because pics or it didn't happen.

Ibby 11-10-2012 08:37 PM

Any of you ever make it up into the frozen northlands vermont-way drop me a line

sexobon 11-10-2012 11:02 PM

I've met several dwellars; but, since I've not posted my name or picture and didn't introduce myself they still don't know it.

Not really, just thought I'd creep you out.

Trilby 11-11-2012 05:33 AM

I've met monster, beest, their kids (wonderful kids) and infinite monkey.

I'd love to meet more of you-but funds keeps me close to home. :(

Oh, I've also met Juniper. We've even been in the same deadly class: 19th C. British texts. Mind-numblingly dull but a great prof.

Sundae 11-11-2012 06:45 AM

Dana and Limey.
Am almost scared to meet any other Dwellars in case they don't live up to the marvellousness of these two.

I talk to Brianna periodically on the phone.
I'm not a phone person, it's not my preferred method of communication.
But I could talk to her for hours and always regret that she is so far away when I put down the phone.

ETA - met CycleFrance in London. He was very gentlemanly and bought me a drink.

Clodfobble 11-11-2012 07:24 AM

I met BrianR when he was driving through Austin once. (Or do I say she now, even though it was still "he" back then? I don't know the etiquette.) It was late at night in a Home Depot parking lot, which sounds sort of creepy when you say it that way. :)

I met plthijinx at his old racetrack job while he kindly tried to beat my stupid broken down minivan into submission for me. He let me drive around the track a few times (in a race car, not my minivan,) and it was fun.

Monster & Beest and their kids once came to my house for an afternoon. Their kids crack me up. Thor rode a tricycle in tiny circles in my entryway. Hebe asked for a glass of milk, which I remember because at that time, I actually still had some in the house.

Flint & Pooka and their kids (and Pooka's mom even!) met me and my kids at a hippie outdoor burger place with a playscape. That place is closed now, and I'm so bummed because it was the only place near me to get a good GF burger.

Myself, Mr. Clod, and Minifob have all spoken to Sundae on the phone at various times. She even sang a song together with Minifob, it was adorable.

Sundae 11-11-2012 01:37 PM

Gosh I forgot our chat!

I do remember stealing a march on everyone by announcing the birth of Fobbette though, and how graciously you accepted it :)

Flint 11-11-2012 06:01 PM

Ok I just paid 3 bucks for tapatalk on my iPhone, why am I still typing with my finger? When does it start typing what I say???

Clodfobble 11-12-2012 09:00 AM

There should be a little microphone picture icon somewhere near the keyboard. Tap that and it goes into listening mode.

Flint 11-12-2012 09:59 AM

Huh. I've got a gear, a bird, a landscape, and a camera.

No little microphone, ear, stethoscope, or 'listening' device.

Interestingly, no idea what the little bird does. Makes 3 dollars fly out of my pocket? It's the developer giving me the bird?

This is really cool and all, but I'm gonna say Philly hook-ups don't count...?

Kidding, but Pooka and I are a long way from home, in Portland (apparently the "Austin" of Oregon--funny, because our other Dwellar meeting was in the Austin of Texas), and on top of that, BigV went to GREAT LENGTHS to drive down here from WA, just to have dinner with us. I mean, you Philly cats need to be having brunch every frickin' Sunday.

BigV, by the way, is exactly the same guy in person. Totally class act. He looked a little like a cross between a wise old owl and a scary biker--the combined effect of which was a little like Theoden of Rohan.

Plus, I got a sneak preview of a few "What is This" ideas!

(Sworn to secrecy...)

Clodfobble 11-12-2012 11:07 AM

Right, so those icons are all above the keyboard, right? But way down in the bottom left, between the comma and the "hide the keyboard" keyboard button, I have a microphone button. However, I have an HTC One, so it may be different for you...

Sundae 11-12-2012 11:12 AM

Hey Flint, you don't get to impose rules on GTGs!
(okay, only saying that because we can never achieve the same distances in the UK)

Although my Mum meeting Ali has to be one of the longest trips undertaken to meet a Dwellar. Ahem.

glatt 11-12-2012 11:15 AM

I was very pleased to meet Elspode when he came to DC. He's the only one I've met IRL.

Flint, press on the "write something..." next to the "REPLY" button. A keyboard then shows up. At the bottom of the keyboard, between "123" and the space bar, there's a microphone button. Press that to dictate your reply. Once you're done, press the DONE button.

Btw, thanks for asking this question. I've been typing everything out. Heck, I just may post replies more now that I have tapatalk AND audio dictation.

Flint 11-12-2012 11:57 AM

I can assure you, if it was there I would be able to find it.

I guess my phone doesn't natively have this function. I have an iPhone 4 (it was free), maybe with an OS upgrade...?

Clod, do you log in to tapatalk, or just to Teh Cellar when you use tapatalk. I ain't got no speaking icon neither.

Flint 11-12-2012 12:14 PM

I feel like an idiot for not being able to figure this out, but at least I know I'm not the only one having this moronic problem.

Clodfobble 11-12-2012 01:22 PM

I have come to realize this is a feature of my phone, and not native to Tapatalk. I also have my microphone button in my keyboard when I am texting, or searching online, etc.

Lola Bunny 11-12-2012 04:06 PM

I have started to think the same but got distracted and forgot about it, hehe. I have the IPhone 4S. Perhaps the mic is added to the keyboard because it has Suri. I don't know.

zippyt 11-12-2012 04:07 PM

Ive met Monster and crew and Phlighty a few times

Flint 11-12-2012 06:24 PM

zippyt (try explaining this to autocorrect) is on my LinkedIn, that's like, "real" ...right?

perhaps your iphone was free because it has no microphone.

Flint 11-12-2012 08:31 PM

I'll take it, though. I like free.

Rhianne 11-12-2012 08:34 PM

A phone without a microphone isn't a phone, it's a - well, I don't actually know what a phone without a microphone would be called.

Clodfobble 11-13-2012 02:41 PM

Technically, any speaker can also act as a microphone. So it would have to be a phone that didn't even make noise.

glatt 11-13-2012 03:37 PM

Walkman headphones were my poor man's microphone in the past. They even fit the jack hole.

Ibby 11-13-2012 05:42 PM

who you callin a jack hole

Well HELL. This is what I get for not hanging out in the Cellar more often. *pouts*

I would have loved to meet up with you and BigV, but clearly I am a big, stupid loser. Y'all could've met here at my place (Vancouver WA-ish) and we'd have had a grand old time. *more pouting*

Next time, guys... Next time.

Flint 11-14-2012 03:27 PM

Totally next time. No biggie, we'll be back!

That bird icon is a Twitter icon. That's all I just noticed. I personally have not done anything with it.

I probably missed some.

Sundae 12-26-2014 01:48 PM

Carruthers came over today.
Charmed the 'rents. Of course.
Very much younger than them, but having lived his life in the region, remembers a lot of the shops and places that Mum remembers.

He came for about two hours and I was surprised when he left; just because it seemed like he'd only been there ten minutes.
Sweet FSM he has a cracking knock on his forehead from a loft-beam accident recently.
We'd joked about it because of my extensional facial bruising, but compared to anyone else it really is a corker.

Mum was completely charmed and although she'd invited him round "any time" originally for saving my life, she now really means it would be great to sit and chat.
Carruthers has the kind of natural conversation which means he can find an interest for anyone he is speaking to, but I genuinely think they interested eachother on some subjects. Or he faked it well enough to fool all of us anyway!

Just don't let her yap on if you meet her again Carr. Or talk about me. AT ALL.
You're safe BTW, as well as being well out of your age range, she loves Dads as much as she moans about him ;) Oh and really, if you're ever at a loose end do drop round - just call first, She'd never avoid you, but she has the Church, the Community, the monsters and a host of old biddies to yap at.

I had such a lovely afternoon.
So weird and yet so right to see Carr in the 'rents' flat.
Even Dads dredged up some memories. When he left, Dad said, "Your friend Edward took me right back. Things I didn't even think I remembered."
Well, it is a compliment really. His eldest brother was Ted.

Sorry about the football thing :) They follow it compulsively.
FTR they had the results coming through in the background; my parents aren't rude enough to watch a game with guests in the flat. Unless England got through to the World Cup Final. (Ahahahahahahahahaha)

Oh, for those not in the know, Edward is not Carruthers' name. Not even close.

Carruthers 12-27-2014 04:35 AM

It was great seeing Sundae and meeting her parents at their flat yesterday afternoon. Two hours did indeed pass in ten minutes, or so it seemed.

The house, of which the flat is one part, dates from the early eighteenth century, according to a local history book.
Properties of that age can sometimes have low door frames and I managed to avoid a cranium v lintel interface.
Last Sunday's events apparently did knock some sense into me. It won't last...

Sundae's Aylesbury thread, Posts #493 to #498 might be of interest to Dwellars.

FTFY.

Oh and thank you sir for a job well done.

Lola Bunny 07-08-2016 05:18 PM

I met Elspode and his wife for lunch this afternoon. Luckily I noticed on Facebook that he was in Ashville. The city is about an hour away. So, I messaged him and drove out with hubby to have lunch with them today. We met his 2 other friends too. Nice people. He and his wife had to leave right after lunch, so we didn't get a chance to hang out long. My hubby didn't want to get stuck in Ashville's Friday rush hour, so I couldn't do any shopping. [emoji53] However, I did get a chance to buy some chocolates. [emoji1] I'll try to go out to Bojangle's and post a picture tomorrow.

V, I'm definitely the lucky one. I can only wish I could have spent more time with the lovely Lola Bunny and her awesome hubby, but long road trips end up being drivebys so often. Still, it was terrific. She is as sweet in person as she is online, and Asheville was an amazing place to meet another Dwellar.

These are my friends and former bandmates Phill and Beth Huber, who were also at lunch with us. Beth is about to become an Associate Professor of English Lit at UNC Asheville, and Phill is a union stagehand who gets to work all the kickass shows that come to Asheville. He is a flautist, and had Ian Anderson autograph his flute case a while back. A couple of songs we recorded together back in the day (the day was 20 years ago at this point, BTW), can be found here and another here.

In the "Goddamn, it is a small friggin' world" category, Lola got to buy her chocolates from their son, who had just gone on shift at the local artisan chocolate shop.

Although very brief, it was a damn high quality Cellarite encounter.

I was the lucky one. Bruce has been promising to take me to Ashville but never did. If it weren't for Elspode, I wouldn't have been able to go there. Also, it was great meeting him and his wife. And his friends were very nice people too. Lastly, I came home with fine chocolates. :D:jig::jig::jig: Bruce took me to Black Mountain to go shopping instead and I got some nice loose tea there.
