Vikings!
Oh.
Hell. Yeah. Watch the first two episodes on on demand. Ragnar Lothbrok. I read the Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. Ragnar is a good guy Dane in that, but the story is told from the British POV. This show is the best thing on tv right now. |
Do they actually say "Vikings" in the show? Which pronunciation do they use?
|
OH MY GOD! Must have.
You has link? |
Vikings are the scariest mofos ever. They come up a RIVER in a boat you thought would be stuck in the ocean (your inland town has no major defenses); and when they get within 6 feet of you, your skull is already cracked open by a pole axe. Not like you wanted to get in close, anyway.

Sunday 10pm. Hulu. I think you can watch the episodes on their website too. |
Thanks!

They're the reason half the Slavic population is blond.

Jim,
You should change your name to Ragnar. I think Loki is closest to my personality. LOL |
he's got the panda eyes
|
I loved the mask he wore. I need one of those so I can jump out of trees & scare folks down by the sewage lagoon. Just thought about this - we could build a Viking ship and sail it in the old lagoon!
|
I'm really enjoying it, although I don't entirely get the whole docudrama notion the History channel is trying here. Shouldn't they at least have a companion series with some funny looking archaeologists talking about middens and misinterpreting religious practices or something?

Most of the Viking longboats that have been recovered, have been proven to be built from Irish trees. But that's the longboats, they built several types of boats for rivers and shit, so they may have covered most of Europe and Eastern Russia before venturing across the water. Then too, England was pretty primitive, so maybe better plunder could be had on the continent.

Lot of monasteries in England. Very much part of the catholic community and a key player, alongside Ireland, in the politics of the Church. What's the timeline on this programme? Vikings invaded Lindisfarne in 793. But they mainly just did smash and grab raids along the coast at that time, mainly in the Summer months. They came properly into the country and wintered here in the mid 9th century (I think, I'll have to wiki it) [eta] Ha! Yes, they wintered in England for the first time in 850, on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. I almost said Thanet in my post but wasn't sure. |
It's just good fun and adventure, not to be taken too seriously, a soap opera in a Viking setting, I doubt they've established a time frame.
And being the History Channel automatically makes it historically bullshit. |

The opening scene has 793 as the date. Yes, it is a soap opera, that's what happens when MGM and the History Channel make the beast with two backs...
|
You shut your whore mouth.
It is not a soap opera. Fag |
Is there singing?
Do they advertise soap? Then I rest my case. |
Soap? In England? Surely you jest...
|
Stop calling me Shirley.
|
I called you a jest, too. :p:

It's not jest, it's Zest, dummy.

Will Erich and Astrid finally meet? Will Gunhild find out about Hilde's pregnancy? Will Leif and Gunnar put aside their differences to save the world?
Find out tomorrow on As the Vikings Turn. |

Needs more motion interpolation to help with judder removal. No self respecting soap opera has that much judder.
Or ignore me. I don't care. |

Just watched episode 3.
All I can say is "I love my gay, dead viking." Also Ragnar's brother is a tool. |
Just watched Episode 1. I'm hooked.
|
"You had me at UHHHNNGH!"

The books are great if you haven't read them yet. Lagertha, is a great female role for exploring what the society was like. In some ways it was pretty progressive. Cornwell did some strong research and had excellent plot development.
|
I've enjoyed Cornwell's other works too. Have any of you read the trilogy of the Archer's Tale??
|
Oh yes!
|
Two or three thoughts:
1. I cannot wait any longer for the Earle's squat little toady to have his smug little head cut off. 2. Despite being obviously devious and conniving, the Earle's wife is way hot and you know she is just waiting for the right moment to throw him under the Longship. 3. Who doesn't love Lagertha, the Shieldmaiden? 4. Has anyone else noted that a bunch of Brit actors playing Vikings is somewhat like a bunch of Native American actors playing Custer et al? How does this show compare to Game of Thrones? |
It's nowhere near as twisting and convoluted. Much smaller setting, simpler, single plot line. Not really in the same league, but still very enjoyable.
I would absolutely wreck the blonde. The earls wife is a whore. He can't get it up. She will fuck someone and he will kill them both. That little bald headed, high pitch voiced cock bite will survive the inevitable coup, and live to fuck with Ragnar next season. I was surprised that Rolo did not betray Ragnar when he had the chance, but I think he will eventually become the main bad guy. Just my predictions based on nothing |
Eddie Izzard is descended from teh Vikings.
Quelle surprise you think, given his blondy-beardy-yumminess. Like LJ really, just without the cross-dressing. But most people who think they have Viking heritage (mostly in the North West) are INcorrect. But then if you go far back enough, Eddie Izzard's fambly is black as Newgate's knocker. As are we all. |

izzard: http://lexiecannes.files.wordpress.c...d300.jpg?w=311 LJ: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...47626925_n.jpg OK... maybe a Little cross dressing if you count that wig. |
Snicker.
You can be a grammar Nazi as long as you do it on my face... |
Fabulous brooch, James!
|
Izzard's the cross dresser, yet LJ is the one with girly braids...
|
Danelaw was northern and easten England. The People who tend to lay greatest claim to viking bloodlines are in the Northeast rather than the northwest (liverpool as an obvious exception to that).
|
North-East
North-East North-East I do deserve spanking for that one. Do I get to chose the spanker though? |
Only if I get to video it and post on youtube
|
Filth monkey is what you are.

Episode 5 was a little weak in the plot development and dialogue areas, but ep. 6 made up for it. Hail Earl Ragnar! |
Anyone else notice that the direction of this show is inconsistent? I mean the Direction. Like last week was really well done. the week before was less so. 3 weeks ago was excellent, 4 was poor. are the 2 guys in charge taking turns? because one is clearly better if they are.
My concern is that this next epi is the season finale... and it's the bad one's turn. |
That's a short ass season
|
yeah... only 9 episodes. maybe next week will be part one of a 2 part thing
|
Season 2 was excellent. The first episode of season 3 aired tonight. Fucking awesome. Awe. Some.
|
Alright!
|
5 episodes in. ... Half way. This show just gets better and better.
|
Apparently, the writers are under the George RR Martin spell. 2 main MAIN characters killed off in successive episodes.
|
Maybe the actors got cancer and died like the lead guy in Spartacus...
|
Last week felt like a transition episode. This week should be intense. Ragnar better snap out of his opioid fog and man up.
|
Bjorn Ironsides is the man now. I see Floki killing Rolo... I love this show.
|
Bjorn is a badass.
|
Naw, LJ is the badass.
