Five Bucks

How much food $5 will buy, around the globe.

limey 04-21-2013 02:05 AM

Is there a similar thing for how long it takes to earn $5 in different countries? You need that information to complete the picture ...

xoxoxoBruce 04-21-2013 04:26 AM

I don't think it was trying to tell Americans, other people have a better deal on food. They were just trying to show the big range of cost on different foods in different areas. I'm certainly not going to pout because some Africans are getting twice as many bananas for their money.

Pretty sure it was aimed at Americans, as everything was done with $5 American.
I think most people are aware there's billions of earthlings who don't see $5, or it's equivalent, in a month, in a year.

Sundae 04-21-2013 06:10 AM

I call shenanigans on 2 bottles of Newkie Brown for $5.
But it's a very interesting idea, and well done.

Aliantha 04-21-2013 06:57 AM

I can get one bottle of wine for $5. It's not that great though. Still does the trick though.

Gravdigr 04-21-2013 02:28 PM

I gotta start drinking Chinese beer.

Anybody ever drink a Chinese beer? Does it equate to anything I drink? (Think Bud, Bud Light, Coors Light, PBR, High Life)

Sundae 04-21-2013 03:07 PM

We used to drink Tsing Tso and Tiger Beer regularly.
Sadly can't compare it to anything you drink as I am no familiar with those beers!

I've had American Bud - too light and frothy for me.
So I'd say these might be too dark for you.

Sapporo (Japanese) is lighter though.
And comes in lovely looking cans.

Gravdigr 04-22-2013 01:58 PM

Not nearly as cheap as the Chinese stuff, though.

But, then again, what is?

Sundae 04-22-2013 04:16 PM

I'm used to paying more for good ale and lager.
Or I was.

(Until I succumbed to tramp-cider which is cheaper than Coca-Cola and can lay you out within 2 litres.)

I've been to countless beer/ lager tasting events by local breweries. Without the intention of getting tanked on free samples even.

Can't say the same for the BBC Good Food & Drink Show, where I deliberately got my teetotal ex to drive Mum, Dad and me. But we'd just got re-engaged so he adored being part of the family again and after all, we all just sang until we fell asleep on the way home. And had made a special point of trawling the food hall countless times too - being we were all greedy in those days and alcoholism was still only something that affected Uncle Ted.

Gravdigr 09-30-2015 06:42 PM

"Thank. God. For. Five. Dollar. Buckets."

He said, drunkenly, from the bar.

Gravdigr 09-30-2015 06:44 PM

Yeah, I resurrected a thread for that. Eat me if ya don't like it.

fargon 09-30-2015 08:37 PM

Chinese beer is kitten piss.

To which of the 35 countries in America are you referring? #rhetoricalquestion

xoxoxoBruce 09-30-2015 10:46 PM

Only one of those 35 countries refer to themselves as Americans, so you are the only one in the hemisphere who is confused.

How am I confused? The first half or your statement illustrated my point exactly. My fellow United States citizens (including POTUS) don't seem to want to acknowledge the fact that our country is not the only one in America that matters. Some of our younger generation even think America is the name of our country.

I wish more Americans would feel our country is the only one that matters to us, take care of business at home, and quit fucking up other people's countries.

It's a reasonable abbreviation. The United States of AMERICA, clue's in the name see.
Which countries in South America have the same word in their country name, whether it's the one they call themselves or the one they are called by other countries? I'm guessing NONE.

I live on the British Isles, in Great Britain, in the United Kingdom and in England (no wonder I move around so much!). Generally though, I refer to myself as British and abroad I am considered English. Can't say it bothers me.
Does everyone know the difference? Hell no. I've been in and watched too many quiz shows to think that.
Does it bother me that other people who live in this country aren't as well-informed as I am regarding geography? Hell, no.
I'd rather they were geographically ignorant than politically ignorant. Sadly I don't get to choose, and I'm afraid many are both

Still, feeling superior sometimes makes the long Winter evenings just fly by.

Bruce makes a very good point that the USA should really be the country that matters most to people who live there.

I've been called fat, ugly and stupid, which are completely different things. But they all apply, so can't say it bothers me. :haha:
