Sycamore Seeks Some Shade

As I was combing my hair tonight, I noticed a surprising amount of grey. This bothers me--as I see it, I shouldn't have this much grey hair at age 27. Although, one of my residents in college had a whole head of grey at age 22 (damn!). Because my hair is so dark, the grey shows up that much more.

I used to dye my hair a lot when I was in college...eggplant, reddish blonde, bleach blonde, fire engine red, etc. The last time I dyed my hair was probably in late 1997. That summer, I had bleached my hair, and when my hair was growing back in its original color (dark brown), the leftover blonde looked like grey, so I dyed my hair jet black.

I've been thinking about doing it again recently, and with the alarming number of grey hairs, it's time. So, the poll question is...which color?

The poll ends Thursday night. After which, I will take the poll results into consideration and go for a dye.

Go freakish. You're a temp, dude. This is the ONE situation where this could be used to your advantage. Since you are the staffing solution, you can get away with shit that should only be seen on employees of Tower Records or certain boutiques on South Street.

Go for it.

I voted blonde, because I can't see another color looking as stupid. :)

Undertoad 03-17-2003 08:33 AM

Grey is the ideal hair color. I voted freakish because I am in favor of dying grey.

Griff 03-17-2003 08:52 AM

Shave it! Shave it all off!

wolf 03-17-2003 09:13 AM

Actually, Syc, I don't personally have any problem with gray.

I'm grayer than I used to be ... there's a brownish hair to too still peeking through, but I've never done anything about it.

It's the color my hair comes in. Don't see any reason to change it.

im with griff. i keep my hair between 1/8th and 1/4th of an inch. easy to wash, no combing or styling involved, and with a 20 dollar initial investment, you never have to pay for a haircut again.

Try a midnight black with red or purple tips or high lights I did not see a pic showing your face and hair very well on your site so I went with what I did see. Oh beautiful Mrs.Syc.

juju 03-17-2003 12:18 PM

If it were me, I wouldn't dye it at all. Too much of a pain in the ass for something that potientially makes you look wiser anyway.

My advice: Accept it! :)

wolf 03-17-2003 12:20 PM

YES! That's it ... we need a decent pic so we can see the current color and style and be better able to match for complexion, etc. (none of this will change my opinion regarding using some freakish color, but will impact precisely WHICH freakish color I might suggest ... A really vibrant purple would be my first choice, with electric blue second, but that's just based on personal preference, rather than any real assessment of what would look best on yah.)

I'll respond to all your comments later, but I'll try to find a photo that actually shows my hair and post it later tonight.

Lady Syc may appreciate the opportunity to razor your head. It can be most sensual.

Hey ... you don't suppose that is what mwf was hinting at that he wanted his GF to do?

warch 03-17-2003 03:24 PM

Red.

Griff 03-17-2003 03:40 PM

Farmall Red?

warch 03-17-2003 03:43 PM

Righteous.

wolf 03-17-2003 03:49 PM

Clarification needed ...

Is Farmall Red (a lovely hue, incidentally) classified under "red" or "some freakish color" for the purposes of the poll?

elSicomoro 03-17-2003 03:54 PM

I would say that is a freakish color.

Only if he does the yellow trim as well.

Okay, now...

I put up "some freakish color" b/c I knew you folks would have fun with that. That's also why I said I would take the poll results into consideration.

Realistically, I can't do the freakish color. Unfortunately, it would never fly at the type of businesses I work at (at least the ones I've worked at in the past 2 years). If I were running my own show, or still at OCM, then I could do it no sweat. I'm already having a hard enough time keeping a job though...if I dye my hair a ridiculous color, that'll make it that much worse.

Not that I haven't completely ruled it out...

And with props to my bald brothers, sorry...I love my hair too much. In fact, it's at its longest point in 5 years. After going back and forth for the past 2 years, I've decided to try and grow it out.

Hmmm...lemme find a couple of pics here.

elSicomoro 03-17-2003 08:53 PM

Okay, here's one pic, from 1997. My hair is short here (I'm the second from the right):

The whole denying your grey thing is just trying to say you're not gettin' old. You, sir, are gettin' old. And the harder you try to pretend it isn't happening, the more freakish you'll look when you do get there. You might look like this:

http://cellar.org/2003/kucinich.jpg

Certainly not dignified.

elSicomoro 03-17-2003 09:15 PM

I may be getting old...but I'm not as old as you.

(Aw schnap!)

This photo shows my hair about as close to possible to its current length (1996):

Oh, and then there's the drivers license pic (2001):

wolf 03-17-2003 09:25 PM

and dude ... if you dye the head, you gotta dye the chin too ...

elSicomoro 04-05-2003 08:13 PM

Man, I completely forgot about this...

I did wind up dyeing my hair 2 weeks ago. The color chosen was cinnaberry (more berry than cinna)...a reddish-brown color. When I'm in the light, it gives off a cool glow.

It's starting to fade already though...it was only a level 2 colorant, which generally lasts through 24 shampoos. I'm probably going to dye it again, after I get it trimmed up.

At the moment, I'm trying to grow my hair out. It's probably at its longest point since I was 14 months old. The goal is to grow the top long, while keeping the sides and the back short. My bangs currently go halfway down my nose. I think I'll make an appointment next week to get the sides and back cut and the top thinned out (I have incredibly thick hair...it's the native american in me).
