The next great Cellar GTG

The last GTG at Plastic Forks was a lot of fun. We should do things like that more often.

So, let's throw some ideas around for another GTG sometime this summer, perhaps next month. What do we want to do?

My own ideas:

--A gathering at a restaurant (rent a banquet room for the night...spread out among 20 people, it would be inexpensive, IMO)
--A gathering at a Dwellar's house (I'd offer my own, but my apartment would be too small for 20+ people, and we can't barbecue here.)
--A picnic at a park (Fairmount, Pennypack, one of the parks in Montco, wherever)

Let the ideas commence...

I'm not going anywhere without Rho.:D

Norristown Farm Park has wonderful picnic pavilions and is convenient for Wolf and me. Lower Providence has identical pavilions at another park over by Tony's place.

I've got a pretty sizable backyard...but by next month I may possibly only be around the area on weekends...got a job possibility in NoVA, of all places. We'll see what develops.

Dirty old man!

Hope the job thing pans Maggie, even if it is in N. Virginia. I just heard a report the other day out of Washington saying that the job market is very strong there compared to most of the country.

dave 07-04-2003 03:56 PM

NoVA rules. I'll buy Maggie a romantic thai dinner.

Okay, maybe just lunch.

[ The job market is very strong here. It's pretty amazing when you look at the rest of the country. Paul and Jen had hard times finding jobs out there, but everyone here is still hiring. Good deal. ]

Not at all amazing. A lot of the new stuff is DoD or Homleand Security related. I had another lead on something starting up in an incubator in Annapolis, but I think that guy isn't really serious.

This bunch in NoVA--office is near Reston, actually--seem to have interesting work. The hiring manager wants me; have to see if I can make it past the other interviews.

My plan is to find some kind of *extremely* modest digs down there for during the week, then drive back here on weekends. The idea of an aerocommute from Wings Field to Dulles is delicious, but would probably require an instrument rating. And a wholly-owned airplane, too, of course...neither of which I have at the moment. ;-)

elSicomoro 07-04-2003 05:56 PM

Modest digs, eh? Well, there's SE DC. ;)

Affordability depends on just how much support you have to send back to Philadelphia. As far as "reasonable" locations in the DC area, you have Arlington and Alexandria, plus the Huntington area. I know plenty of places in MD, but I don't know how you'd feel about staying there (given the gun laws and all).

More like I don't want to leave any $ in VA I don't have to. Once I'm well-tucked into the company, I should be able to telecommute, assuming they make an offer...they already have people doing that. Also assuming they survive to the second round of VC money.

Well, MD and DC gun laws suck pretty much equally.

VA doesn't issue non-resident permits, and right now I don't intend to establish VA residence. I suppose I'll just have to rely on the protective effect of it being a shall-issue state for residents. Only about 3-4% of a population has to carry for it to have a noticable effect on violent crime.

Kind of a shame, there's government-mandated training for issuance in VA; if they were as reasonable as we are in PA we'd have reciprocity with them and my carry permit would be good there and theirs here.

dave 07-04-2003 11:33 PM

Remember, that's for concealed carry, though. I believe that you can have it on a hip holster, in plain view, and be legal. As long as you don't brandish.

But you'd have to look it up.

Bless your heart. :D :) ;)

I'm afraid it's my butt that will need blessing if Syc catches up with me. :D

hot_pastrami 07-09-2003 11:25 AM

I've got plenty of space at my house, including a deck and a patio with a great view. We could whip out the barbeque and sit on the lawn furniture drinking cold ones all night long. Of course, I live in Utah...

Hey, where's everybody going all the sudden? Come back! Wait up guys!

Hello? I'm cold, and there's wolves chasing me.

Hello?

OnyxCougar 07-11-2003 09:43 AM

I'd offer up my 4 br apt in Vegas if I wasn't leaving in 20 days. Meantime, my choices are NC, Hampton Roads, VA and Iowa. Decisions, decisons.

Elspode 07-11-2003 11:42 AM

Hampton Roads and NC are your choices. I've been to Iowa, there's very little coastline there, or even close to there.

dave 07-11-2003 12:27 PM

VA puts you nearer a lot of the Cellar users and in a better position to attend the next get-together, you know. Plus, I live in VA, which makes it a great state. :)

OnyxCougar 07-11-2003 08:42 PM

Well, I just had an interview with the NC people, and it's looking really good. I'd be about 2 hours south of Hampton Roads, VA, though, so I can still visit Dave! :)

elSicomoro 07-11-2003 08:50 PM

Dave lives in Northern VA, near Washington, DC, so you'd be like 6 hours away from him. Not like you'd want to visit him anyway...he's an asshole. Add an extra hour or so and come to Philadelphia instead.

Hampton Roads is cool, though it's best to stay in VA Beach or Chesapeake.

I've only been to NC once, just outside Chesapeake. But I hear NC is rather up and coming these days.

Iowa...eh, no.

elSicomoro 07-26-2003 11:44 AM

Awww come on! I made this thread 3 weeks ago, and the only one that has given legitimate ideas on places to hold a GTG is Maggie. (Alan, not that yours was bad, but given that you live in Utah and all...)

If we want to do anything at a city/county/state park it will most likely require getting a permit and planning...and we're in the heart of picnic season.

So, for those that are interested, let's first decide this: Do we want to have a GTG in August or September?

dave 07-26-2003 05:07 PM

September.

Dagney 07-26-2003 08:49 PM

September would work better for Brian and me :)

We're hoping to be down that way sometime that month.

Dagney

elSicomoro 07-26-2003 10:09 PM

As long as you ain't coming here to see Yanni.

Dagney 07-27-2003 08:33 AM

Nahhh not Yanni....

Actually, probably to shop for housewares and look for wedding stuffs....but not Yanni :)

Dags

elSicomoro 07-27-2003 10:12 AM

That reminds me of a funny story...

Rho used to go to this dialysis clinic on Roosevelt Boulevard here in NE Philadelphia. And it was in this strip mall, two doors down from a David's Bridal shop.

Rho and I are leaving the clinic one Friday afternoon, and we see these two women yelling and shoving each other on the parking lot. The one is yelling, "Yeah! Fuck you bitch! I got what you wanted! Fuck off!"

From what I gathered, the woman doing the yelling bought a dress that the other woman had her eye on in the store, and it escalated once the two were outside on the parking lot. I've heard of shit like that happening before, but to see it in person was too funny.

elSicomoro 08-18-2003 11:29 AM

Seņor Shepps has volunteered his house...now we need a date.

Actually UT, you need to let us know what date is good for you, since it's your crib and all...and so you can prepare Sharon for the onslaught.

Undertoad 08-18-2003 11:37 AM

But it's football season!

Well, there you go.

Football viewing at Toad's house! Bring beer and chips. Making fun of the easy chair and micro-ottoman optional, but recommended.

When?

Undertoad 08-18-2003 01:05 PM

But but but ----

What a great idea, Tony. Monday night game at your house.
Boy, am I in deep shit now.

OnyxCougar 08-26-2003 01:44 PM

It needs to be on a Sunday so I can come. I get Wednesday and Sundays off

SteveDallas 08-26-2003 02:50 PM

Hey cool Tony, thanks. Now all we need is to invite some kind of computer journalist and it'll be just like that GTG back in 1993(?).

Elspode 08-26-2003 04:21 PM

I have a computer, and I do write occasionally...does this make me a computer journalist?

If so, let me know the date and when I can expect to receive my airline tickets, and I'll see you all then! :D
