As far as I can tell this is not a PSed image. It certainly reflects some of news stories around here the last few weeks/month.

I dunno... I thought sharks didn't venture into shallow waters?

It's real. The story that went with that picture was about why so many sharks have showed up close to shore on the west coast of the US this summer. Big ones too.:)

Great White sharks have been spotted with the surfers up at San Onofre in the last month or so. They have regularly been sighted along the coast from Long Beach up to Santa Barbara. I would not be surprised to learn this photo was taken here in SoCal in the last month.

Where do you live arz? I live in San Diego. I don't watch TV much, but I have heard of some sharks around the area lately. Actually, I don't think it's lately, I think they are here quite often, it's just that people don't see um. I've seen pics of our coastline where there are several big sharks just past the surf break hanging out.

No link. I saw it on Yahoo a month or so ago.

I visited Dave's linked site, I'm still not convinced. After comparing the pic here with the pic of the dolphin they show I still think it looks like a shark. The dorsal fin of the first pic looks more pointy and the body looks more streamlined than the dolphin. Of course I wasn't there and can't really argue with the guy who was, but it still looks "fishy" to me. Yeah, I now dolphins aren't fish, but I couldn't pass up the funny:) .

If you don't mind me asking, where exactly? La Jolla, Encinitas, farther north? I lived in La Mesa my whole life, but had to live with my dad in the ghetto (City Heights) for a few years, now I live in the boonies, Jamul. I used to take my dogs to Dog's Beach in Pacific Beach all the time, but not so much lately, it's about an hours drive for me now.

The second pic is from a different angle. That's why it looks different.

I realize that, but from a side view like the first pic, a dolphin's dorsal fin is more rounded as well as their bodies. The first pic shows a pointy dorsal fin with a streamline body. Still looks more shark-like to me rather than dolphinoid.:)

The fins are not at all like a shark's. It's a dolphin. Those who were there said it's a dolphin. Here's a picture of the same animal and - look! - it's a dolphin. "I'm still not convinced." That's because mental midgets like you never are.

Don't blame me. That's the picture they used with the article about the increase in close to shore shark sightings, in CA. It was right after the woman(?) swimming with the seals or sea lions got chewed up.
Why is the dolphin's tail vertical in the first picture?

I'm the one that mentally retarded people pick on. I think they smell my fear and uncertainty (up until the time that I got attacked by the psychotic guy who broke my hand, the only clients I had problems with were MRs. I don't have a lot of expertise with MRs, and as a consequence don't interpret their behavioral signals quickly enough and got hit a couple of times. Luckily they tend to be somewhat uncoordinated and move slowly enough that I've been able to block the attacks).

This is a picture of a dolphin. The fluke/tail is laying flat. Sharks tails are vertical. The really ironic thing is that there are great whites swimming that close to surfers in these areas, and they never know it. The sharks are not in any way interested in them; they prey on seals, and it's astronomically rare they make a mistake.

The animal in the pic posted in this thread appears to have a vertical tail fin to me. I would agree that fatalities from shark attacks are very rare, but not shark bites. While shark bites are somewhat rare I wouldn't say they are astronomically rare.

It looks like the fin is placed farther back on the body, and it's kind of whale-shaped rather than torpedo-like. The tail would rake back at a shallower angle if it were vertical like a shark. Plus I see a beak on it.

I was the kid who was watching PBS when other kids were watching cartoons; that's a dolphin.

A sharks dorsal fin is normally not curved on the back side. They are typically straight from the top. A dolphins, however, are usually curved. So, in conclusion its either an atypical shark or a dolphin - just thought I'd clear that up.:eyebrow: :headshake
