I like cold weather for the most part. But damn, it's really cold out tonight...it's colder here in Philadelphia than it is in Anchorage, Alaska.

Of course, it could be worse...I could be up in Griff's neck of the woods...

According to the "outside temperature" button in my car it was 7°F as I was driving home in the car.

I did not push for the celsuis conversion, because I thought it would be too scary. I am not yet prepared for numbers involving a - yet.

I think my fingers were trying to fall off from exposure to the cold between the office and the car.

The only thing on me that was toasty warm was my head, because I rather intelligently fell for an advertising pitch on QVC for a "Comfort-Temp" hood. I may have to get the gloves and socks now.

Skunks 01-10-2004 03:26 AM

And you can keep it, too.

We just got over a freak patch of snow and ice here in Eugene. It lasted a few days, and now it's gone--started Monday, iced on Tuesday, pretty much clear by Wednesday night. I managed to fall down three times on Tuesday, once on each staircase out of Deady Hall, and then again on my walk home.

Griff 01-10-2004 07:52 AM

-14.2 F

xoxoxoBruce 01-10-2004 10:01 AM

Wow, the temperature here has DOUBLED in the last 4 hours. It's 10 now.:)

elSicomoro 01-10-2004 10:35 AM

Skunks, you guys don't get a whole lot of snow at lower elevations in Oregon, do you? When I heard that Portland got 7 inches earlier in the week, I was rather surprised.

It got down to 4 last night at NE Airport...it's currently 10. And I have to go out later today for food...fuck.

10 degrees F converted to Celsius...

Whit 01-10-2004 11:55 PM

Yeah, it sure is cold. Supposed to be 28 degrees outside my door right now.(It's almost midnight) Damn, that means I'll probably have to scrap ice off my windshield, and this is like the third or fourth time this year! Oh well, it's supposed to get up to near 60 tomorrow. I'll think of you guys as I'm putting on a light jacket tomorrow.

Skunks 01-11-2004 12:09 AM

I've lived the past 12 years in either Astoria or Springfield/Eugene. Astoria is on the coast (9mi inland, on the river) and Eugene is sort of in a valley, I gather.

I've seen snowfalls greater than 2" maybe two, three times in my life.

Now, if you were talking Kelvins, that would be scary.

elSicomoro 01-11-2004 10:33 AM

It's 20 right now, after getting down to 7 last night. It's already warmer this morning than it was at any time yesterday.

We're supposed to have a heat wave Mon. and Tues...temps in the mid-40s, but then it's supposed to get cold again Wed.

Well lessee, yesterday morning, it was 5 degrees F at Bruce's place, which would be 258K. {[(5-32)*5]/9)}+273=258K

So, if the temperature doubled Kelvin-wise, it would be 516K, which would make it...[(516-273)*1.8]+32=469.4 degrees F.

Yep, that would be pretty fucking scary. :)

(And you all thought learning temperature conversions was useless!)

I went up to the Big Apple Friday afternoon to hang out with a college friend who now lives in Tennessee, but was coming up for a conference. It was cooooold... I think TV said it was around 5 degrees Saturday morning. On Friday night we went to the Metropolitan Opera, which is only 10 blocks or so from the hotel he was in, but we sprung for a cab each way anyway because it was so windy & cold.

We're now having a heat wave at 26 degrees! :D

warch 01-11-2004 05:53 PM

hee hee hee. :)

The artic blast is making some folks happy. It finally got cold enough here to start harvesting 20" ice from the lake Phalen and building the Winter Carnival Ice Palace. There's a web cam, you can kinda see whats going on here It built totally by volunteers, who have been working into the night.

There're flatbeads of huge blocks, and they use a blowtorch to melt it together. Its going to be one you can actually go inside, which hasnt been the case for several years.

xoxoxoBruce 01-11-2004 07:35 PM

That's cool (no pun) Warch. The 2 1/2 minute animation (40meg) of what they plan to do is beautiful. Colored searchlights INSIDE one of the ice buildings, sparkling trees, a fountain alternating water and fire. There was only a few people but 1 on crutches, 2 with walkers and 2 in wheelchairs. They're really stressing handicapped access. Must be Federal money involved. :)

warch 01-12-2004 10:11 AM

No, just a lot of old farts in Saint Paul! Truely, the carnival has huge appeal for seniors that have fond memories from childhood. The last one you could walk through was built in the 40s or 50s I think. There is all this King and Queen of snows stuff, Klondike Kate, traditional characters, the Vulcans dressed like devils going around kissing women- Hey I think we found a role for you...

xoxoxoBruce 01-12-2004 05:05 PM

Thanks. I wanted to be on a role.:)

warch 01-23-2004 03:42 PM

The palace... She is finished. Check out that web cam again... Pretty cool. Just in time for the NHL All Star game and circus!

That's amazing! No wonder the last one this big was before I was born.:)

Griff 01-26-2004 06:50 PM

Tuesday Night
Snow...heavy at times. Accumulation of 7 to 10 inches possible. Lows in the mid teens. East winds 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest shortly after midnight.

:) nice

xoxoxoBruce 01-26-2004 08:09 PM

It's not snowing in MN.

wolf 01-27-2004 12:18 AM

It's also not snowing in Philadelphia.

The "Wintry Mix" was supposed to start around 1800 hrs (ET) here. I'm not complaining at the lack of snow, mind you .. but it is disconcerting to be all ready for it, to have plenty of bread and milk and eggs ... spare ice scraper in the car, full tank of gas ...

Shit, the way this is looking every damn high school student in the area has a test tomorrow that they didn't study for.

Cam 02-12-2004 10:42 PM

It's old news but we hit -40 here, without windchill. When I was walking to class I thought my throat was going to freeze shut. Now were keeping right around a nice comfortable 20 degrees during the day at about 0 at night.
