Curious....

I'm just curious...how does one create a user-hosted forum?

Sidhe

elSicomoro 01-18-2004 03:26 PM

It usually goes something like this...

"Yo Toad! I want my own forum!"

"Okay...it's set up and ready to go."

Lady Sidhe 01-18-2004 05:58 PM

Um...ok.....

YO, TOAD! I WANT MY OWN FORUM! Pretty Please? *grins*

Sidhe

lumberjim 01-18-2004 06:27 PM

but then again, sycamore has one, so .....?

elSicomoro 01-18-2004 06:36 PM

OK, let's do it! Anyone who wants a user-hosted forum, let me know.
Jimbo, someday, you might reach my level of awesomeness. I seriously doubt it, but miracles do happen.

As an aside, the 3-year anniversary of Mk. V was last Tuesday. My 3-year anniversary here is this Tuesday. Whoohoo!

So does this mean you think I'M NOT WORTHYYYYYYY!!???:D

Sidhe

lumberjim 01-18-2004 08:58 PM

not neccessarily. what's the advantage to having your own forum? I had considered starting a thread called Lumberjim's Office(just so I could tell people to step into my office), but had not really thought about the forum thing. hmmm? what would you put in your very own forum? would you make up rules? post daily breifings? photos? what?

I'll need to see a synopsis on my desk by morning.

lumberjim 01-19-2004 02:30 PM

wow, not only did lady sidhe's forum not show up, but juju's is gone now!

Lady Sidhe 01-19-2004 04:47 PM

Well, I figure I'll have to get the forum first....

Sidhe

lumberjim 01-19-2004 04:53 PM

Huh?

I think UT is ignoring us.

elSicomoro 01-19-2004 07:25 PM

I guess Juju had too much on his plate again.

So Sidhe, what are you planning to do with your own forum?

Lady Sidhe 01-19-2004 08:33 PM

Hm...I hadn't really thought about it, but what I'd like to kind of do is have a rants page. I have pretty strong, and sometimes unpopular, opinions about a lot of things; I could post them, get 'em out of my system, and people wouldn't have to read them if they didn't want to (or if they did, it might spark some pretty good discussions). I also like to write poetry, and I thought maybe other people did, too, and poetry could be posted there and reviewed by people who were interested. Hell, why not post rants in poetry? Hmmmmm.....:D

Sidhe

Lady Sidhe 01-19-2004 08:56 PM

I don't really know about posting rules, as such....The only real rule would be something like:

"If you're easily offended, or thin-skinned, don't bother coming here."

I have a board on Yahoo, called "Think For Yourself, Dammit!," which was intended to be something of a rants page, where people could post what they thought about what was wrong with society, or their own personal pet peeves, and such, but it's ended up being sort of a place where all of my friends (we all know each other and live close together) post interesting or funny articles and such. I'd really like a board, though, where people can just come and bitch and vent and blow off steam about what pisses them off. I think people need that, ya know?

Like for instance....animal testing pisses me off....it's cruel and unnecessary in cosmetics testing and the like, for one thing. For another thing, animals often don't give accurate results when it comes to medical testing, and I think that death-row inmates should be used instead. They ought to be made to work for their keep instead of being taken care of with MY money. Screw "cruel and unusual."

Speaking of which, the whole "cruel and unusual" debate concerning the death penalty pisses me off, too...but I'll save that for if I get the forum...:D

Sidhe

xoxoxoBruce 01-20-2004 04:59 PM

You can start a thread here on any one of those things without a forum.:)

couldn't have said it better myself. "they're injecting them with chemicals (too lazy now to look it up again) and it may cause them extreem pain" yeah, well good. i hope they feel it in the afterlife too. it would be no comparison to the pain that the families feel every day. and as far as using them for medical testing? "oops shit! it didn't work doc! he just keeled over and croaked! oh well, send in the next one, Rita" hell yeah. test them instead.

Lady Sidhe 01-20-2004 07:35 PM

Yeah, but this would be strictly a bitch forum. You wouldn't necessarily have to back it up with facts...it aggravates you, you bitch about it. Or write poetry about it...lol.

Sure and then make them into lampshades and soap.

juju 01-20-2004 10:29 PM

Sorry to have not said anything. I still have ample free time. It just seemed like the "magic" I used to have with writing entries wasn't working, and I decided it wasn't going to. Plus, the character of the Cellar seems to be changing from a place of intelligent discourse to a place for idle chit-chat. This makes me not want to come here so often, which undermines my attempts to keep my forum updated regularly.

But don't worry, I'm definitely sticking around. :)

juju 01-20-2004 10:42 PM

I also have some constructive criticism. "Curious..." is an extremely bad title for a thread. Thread titles should always describe the contents of the thread in a concise and informative way. A better title would be something like "user-hosted forums" or "user-hosted forums?".

That way, when people log on to the board the next day or the next week, they will not forget what the thread is about, and they won't have to click on it again just to find out. Armed with this new knowledge that you have given them, they are then able to make an informed choice about whether or not they wish to read the replies in that thread.

Informed choices. That's what it's all about.

wolf 01-20-2004 10:45 PM

The idle chit-chat thing is a phase, juju. This too shall pass.

Sidhe, if you want a place to bitch, start a thread named Bitch Thread. You do NOT need a forum for something like that, and in fact, I think such a thing would weaken the concept of user hosted forums.

juju 01-20-2004 11:09 PM

Not necessarily.

In my forum, I usually wrote some sort of anecdote about something that had happened to me recently. I'd say what I felt and thought while it was happening, and then I'd segway into some (hopefully) interesting thoughts or insights I had learned from that experience. That part would hopefully get people thinking and replying, but of course the entire thread also doubles as a journal of sorts. So, I think you can create a good forum based around rants, if you do it right.

But of course, if you're just going to give your opinions on different subjects, there are already forums for that.

Segway?? Segue, perhaps?:)

Oh, I see Mike covered that. Nevermind.

warch 01-22-2004 01:22 PM

And I think Syc covered the I wanna segway discussion.

Lady Sidhe 01-22-2004 08:08 PM

Well, I would hope that the threads posted on my forum would initiate interesting debate. Just because you bitch about something because it pisses you off doesn't make it insignificant or irrelevant. I'd hope that the things people talk about would be controversial, things that get people thinking and debating...

For instance...I've posted things such as opinions on abortion, prostitution, gay marriage, and the like on other boards, but got no response either agreeing or disagreeing. It was as if people didn't want to touch the subjects. I like to see how people think, and I believe that controversial subjects get people thinking about, well, what they REALLY think. That's what I'd like to do with this forum, among other things. I'm sure it would evolve over time, but it has to start somewhere.

lumberjim 01-22-2004 08:23 PM

sidhe, set up a poll in home base, and we'll vote on it!
