Where are you (should you care to divulge such sensitive info)

wolf 02-20-2004 01:41 PM

Closet major city is Philadelphia ... but my work schedule is flipped around from most peoples. I go to work when most people are coming home, and return home some time after midnight.

blue 02-20-2004 01:44 PM

NW Wisconsin, and yes it is snowing AGAIN.

novice 02-20-2004 01:44 PM

Ugh. You night shift, me weekend insomniac. G'day

novice 02-20-2004 01:46 PM

Good day,
It's a balmy 18 degrees and sunny here in good ol' Salt Lake City...Utah. As my mother used to say....Yep, Urine Utah. It is 1pm. Just 4 more stinking, hellish, miserable hours here at work. Then I'm off to be a weekend warrior (see DO YOU SMOKE POT)

Perth, pereth, perthuz...

All different names for the Norse rune meaning something like "mystery" or "mystery revealed". It can be interpreted as something of a luck icon.

A nickname given to me in high school. :)

novice 02-20-2004 02:25 PM

I asked because I live about 20 minutes south of "Perth", Western Australia. Now I know where the the name came from. Thanks:)

perth 02-20-2004 02:32 PM

No problem. Most people think I'm referring to the city. No, I'm afraid the truth is far dorkier. :)

novice 02-20-2004 02:35 PM

Dorks rule the intarweb no?

FileNotFound 02-20-2004 02:35 PM

Your nickname in HS was "Mystery" or "Mystery Revealed"?

I'm afraid to even ask...

It's probably best not to, though in my defense, it was more because of the "luck" interpretation. And it was something of an ironic nickname at that.

I'm stifling a really strong urge to clean out the contents of my storage closet here and ship them to you. (Can you 20 15" monitors??)

elSicomoro 02-20-2004 05:13 PM

Novice, the Cellar originated as a BBS in the Philadelphia area...and a good dozen of the regulars live in the area or within a 2-3 hours drive.

To my knowledge, Rho and I are the only two that actually live in the City of Philadelphia.

SteveDallas 02-20-2004 06:05 PM

point taken, tho I do work in Philadelphia if that counts.

elSicomoro 02-20-2004 06:14 PM

Fair enough...you give the city 3 percent and change of your hard-earned money.

Depends on them being colour and working. 15" monitors are great for linix servers that don't need a GUI...

With that said...20?!!!

I'm NOT paying shipping.

Troubleshooter 02-20-2004 10:32 PM

Just across the lake from New Orleans, La.

And Mardi Gras is almost upon us so I hope you're not planning on visiting. All the out of towners ruin the city until it's over.

Not that it's much to crow about in the first place...

Troubleshooter, as a resident, can you give me some info, links, etc on what to see and do in 4 days (Thurs-Mon) in the NO area? (I suppose you should put it under the cities forum...)

nekee 02-21-2004 01:11 PM

I am from Binghamton New York. I read the post about the hockey fight and had to laugh because it involved the Binghamton Senators! Well who knew that we had a hockey team? hmmmmm......

Before you get all pissed off, let me say that Banghampton is pretty close, although I am on the free side of the border.

There is another senior member here that is also close but I dont think he shares the same intense dislike of NYS that I do.

In any case, it's nice to have you here.

BrianR 02-21-2004 05:47 PM

That would be me, and slang is right...I do not dislike NYS, I just do not go there. I went to Rochester once and I go to NYC now and then but NY is not a big destination for me.

elSicomoro 02-21-2004 05:57 PM

Griff lives near Binghamton...that's who I thought slang was referring to.

I thought you were in Hazleton, Brian.

slang 02-21-2004 06:04 PM

[nothing personal] Well, anyone that shares my lack of enthusiasm in NYS in general, can reply as if they were the unnamed member I was referring to. [NYS members]

nekee 02-22-2004 12:19 AM

New York isn't that bad actually. I have lived here my whole life and haven't had any problems. I am not pissed it is your opinion and everyone has one. But hey if you dont like it then you are probably doing the best thing by staying out of it. I like NY better in the summer I am so damn sick of shoveling snow and wearing 10 layers of clothing just to get out my door to get to work every morning. Know what I mean?

Well that's something people that live in Slangsylvania or Grifftopia can identify with. :D

BrianR 02-22-2004 12:15 PM

Binghgampton is two hours north of here...go up 81 to Scranton then continue across the NY border to 17 and go west. There it is.

Scranton being an hour away and the same distance to Bing (according to my map), I figure two hours...that's close in my world.

Brian

I like bitter cold weather. When it's 10 degrees out, it normally doesnt snow and almost no one is outside. This feeds my fantasy that I am the only person on this planet and no longer need to fight and argue with anyone but myself. :)

When it does snow, it covers everything from view, again feeding the same fantasy.

What can I say, I'm a polite misanthrope. Hey, at least I'm honest about it.

Ok I'm from upstate.Thats where the far in my name comes from.Just south of Rochester.NY has many beautiful areas. What pisses some of you off about it?Just curious.
I'm now near Portland,Oregon. This is where I chased my ex and my kids. She walked out after 17 years and that is fine.I will deal. But I could not go on not being a father. So here I am.Now THIS state....arrrghhh.

First off, I'd like to say that I have relatives in Greece and Henrietta. They rock even if we do argue politics after a coupla six-packs. One cuz is a Montco Sheriff's deputy and one of the others is a NYS cop.

My overall dislike of the state stems from the policies towards guns, drugs, and what I think of as a socialistic leaning.

If you like to take/sell/distribute drugs, NYS is the better state to exercise that. The penalties are much less than in the "religious" state of Pa.. If you like to shoot and carry handguns legally, NYS is not the place you can easily exercise that.

Since I'm not into drugs and I love shooting and carrying legally, NYS is not my favorite place to go.

And of course, there's always the Hilary thing. That really turns me off too. Also the policy of the state is generally driven by New York City, even though the majority of the state (upstate) is rural.

Slang is most definitely a rural slacker, not a city slacker.

Lastly, the Pa State cops are much more polite and professional.

Why do I do this to myself? Why am I suprised when guns are the first answer I receive?I guess I'll go to my grave always being amazed by how preoccupied many people are about them.
Socialist?Could you not bring yourself to say the "D" word?Having grown up in Greece and knowing upstate NY better than just about anyone I know,I must admit I'm stumped.I'm not familar with the Montco sheriffs.Unless of course you meant the Monroe county sheriffs. As far as drug laws go,here's a suggestion.Just for fun,why don't you research the Nelson Rockefeller drug laws in New York state? To save the suspense what you will find are some of the most arcane, inhumane drug statutes in this country. The "Hilary thing"?I'm guessing that smart articulate women make you uncomfortable?Having traveled into the fine state of Pennsylvania many times and having had at least my share of experiences with law enforcment I must admit I have no idea if either is more polite or professional.Luckily, I'm sure you have studies backing up your statement.Otherwise why would you have said it?Right Slang?
