Back Pain
What a pain in the back!!
The last 6 weeks or so I've been in pretty much constant, low level pain. I didn't move any furniture or lift anything heavy or do any strenuous excercises, but my lower back muscles have been aching. Some days more than others. Yesterday, I woke up and it hurt so bad I didn't know what to do. I couldn't stand, couldn't sit, couldn't lay down on my tummy or back, couldn't do anything without massive pain. So I took 1 aspirin, 1 aleve, 2 tylenol and a excedrin tension headache pill and Steve rubbed some Ben Gay on it. I went to work, but soon the drugs started to wear off, and I left early and went to the doctor. He looked at it, made me move, and declared I have a sprained back which is also in spasm. He wrote me off work 6 days, prescribed 800mg Motrin, Flexiril for the imflammation and Percoset for the pain. In addition, I have to put ice on it for 20 minutes 3 times a day for 2 days, then heat for the same. Then he wants me to go to PT and learn excercises to strengthen my back and belly muscles. I was told to lose 100 pounds, start controlling my PCOS (to help me lose the weight and prevent diabetes) and start walking a mile a day +. So that's my story. Offered as an explanation why I've been bitchy the past few weeks. My apologies to those I've offended. |
I am intimately familiar with all of these symptoms, both with my wife, and to a lesser extent, myself.
Do not discount the power of chiropractic through all of this. Also, Flexoril is a wonderful, wonderful medication. I use it to relieve simple tension and stress PRN. Good luck. We're all dieting at our house, so I understand the issues involved. |
"You know what bitch? You better back the fuck up. I mailed it on the 2nd. The post office must have lost it. SO FUCKING SORRY. I mailed Rho's disc on Monday. So if you don't get it this week, JUST WAIT LONGER. I copied Rho's disc on to my computer before I lestened to it, JUST TO GET IT OUT ON TIME because I didn't get it until 2 or 3 days before.
So unless you feel like me skipping your ass altogether, quit yer bitchin." this is a direct quote from OC to me. wow, that back pain must REALLY be bad. |

I've been to the doctor for back pain and all they do is throw drugs at it. I hate that. And staceyv - I won't discount your issue with OC but I have a major problem with your post in this forum. You can communicate with OC via email or PM and there is already a place where issues related to that topic can be discussed - your post does not belong in this forum, imho. |
Beestie, don't ruin this for me! I was looking forward to a good flamewar! :)

And when the fuck did I become the voice of reason around here? Must have missed a memo. P.S. I like you both thats why I want you to kiss, make up and stick around. We don't need 2 more idiots starting some other suck ass forum with the other 2 people that actually hang out with them. |
And oh yeah, about back pain, I don't deal with it much but when I do I am a very unhappy boy. Nothing like nonstop pain to make you pissed at the world.
What was GOD thinking when he designed us anyhow? And once you get old enough to really get into the back pain, then the knee thing starts to kick in. |

For young people, how do try to prevent back and knee pains? |
we want to watch
Yeah, that would be a bonus.

When I was 16, I screwed up the discs in my lower neck (7th & 8th), and suffered for 2 years with my hands going to sleep any time they were above my chest, like driving. Then a guy I met took me to his chiropractor who gave me a quick adjustment and in 5 minutes I was cured. Shazam! Fast forward a few years, 300 miles, self abuse and a couple motorcycle accidents and I'm hurting again. I go to 3 different Chiropractors and get treated, twice per week, for months. They did heat, ultrasound, poke and prod, but no help. I contacted the guy that took me to the chiropractor origionally and he told me to find a graduate of the Palmer School in Davenport, Iowa. I contacted the school, got a listing in this area, went to see him. Yeah, Shazam, baby. ;) |

edit: you don't want to take me on with this one, Stacey, I promise. |

Well, Onyx, I can understand why you've been irritable. Even as I write this, my boyfriend is laying in bed with an ice pack on his back. I just gave him 3 aspirin and rubbed this Swiss stuff from the health food store all over his back. He is not exactly Mr. Sunshine himself at the moment. I'll forgive you if you forgive me.

Done! (And I won't even tell you to stop assuming stuff!) ;)

I like OC because she's a tough, beautiful, intelligent chick...I do NOT like the purple thing. I like Stacey because she's open, stupid, kindof hot and sticks around when she gets ripped on. |
I feel for you OC. About 3 years ago I fucked my back up at work. When to a chiropractor and all, but 3 years later I still deal with pain on a daily basis. Some day the pain is low enough I can ignore it and other days I cant move without a huge amount of pain shooting up my back and down my legs. I never filed a workers comp claim and I wish to god I had. I buy those ThermaCare back heat things all the time, and sometimes wear them to bed. God I love those things, often 10 hours later they are still putting off heat. I wish you a speedy recovery because I know how shitty back pain can be. Hope you feel better.

Oh cripes, ok, OC is the kind of girl I'd like to get to know and bang all weekend.
You are the kind of girl I'd like to party with and bang all weekend. Is that fair enough? |
you mean i'm the type of girl you would use for cheap sex, and you would buy OC jewelry and take her on vacations, right? i am SO insulted now, you BASTARD!;)
|
HA! I wouldn't buy either one of you jewelry, and if I ever take an actual vacation I'm going with my buddie, my dog. I would have cheap sex with both of you however, that is if I can get my wife to buy into it.
|
Unfortunately, I'm terribly expensive to maintain. But at least I let you know that going in.... figuratively speaking, of course....

Better late than never
Sorry I'm a little late on this thread.
I have to slipped disk in my lower back from a car accident a few years ago. My back will spasm every once in a while and I can't move without extreme pain. What I have found that will get me to start walking again, immediately, is to do back stretches. It get's me to a point where I can walk and get on with life without extreme pain and I can get through the day. I now do back stretches everyday to get it into top form. Since my wife left, I decide that I would get it back into shape and start getting an active life going. And on the side note, I'm free for any banging that needs to be done. But truth be known, I rather just take a girl to the movies and walks through the park than any "banging.". Yeah, I'm pretty pathetic right now. |

PCOS is PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome. The Simple Explanation is this: On a normal woman, every 28 days or so, an egg will mature on the surface of the Ovary, and then hormones will cause the tissue covering that egg to rupture, releasing the egg. The egg then flows into the fallopian tubes and down into the uterus, where it sits for about 3 days. If it's not fertilized, it sheds with the built up lining, known as a period.
(I feel like a Biology teacher). Women with PCOS: the egg matures, but the hormones are off-kilter, so the tissue covering the eggs never bursts. Consequently, my ovaries are about twice normal size, and I don't have periods often. (I did have them once a year for awhile, but that seems to have stopped.) The downside (since I consider no periods to be an upside) is the cause of the problem, namely, my hormones are out of balance, and that causes weight gain, skin tags, excessive facial hair, an increased risk of diabetes and other endocrine problems, and complete surprise when I *do* end up with a period (as opposed to something I can plan). It can also cause infertility (since the eggs aren't releasing). I was just diagnosed with it last year, but the doc says that I've had it all my life. This explains why my periods have always been irregular. That irregularity is what caused me to be completely oblivious to my first two pregnancies until I was 5 1/2 months in. Suddenly, there was movement and that's when I knew I was pregnant. (I am thankful I never had a day of morning sickness.) So that's more info than you wanted, I'm sure. :D |

I haven't had a period in well over a year, but that's because of me being on dialysis. I don't miss it one bit! LOL. |

Exercise regularly - especially exercises that build a strong core - abdominals etc. Sit in chairs with no arm and no back. You will learn to hold yourself erect using only your core muscles. Good luck. |

So I went to my followup appointment on Friday, and established myself a "Primary Care Physician". That's insurance-speak for "The doctor that you will be seeing most often."
She has been out of school for 12 years, and taught at the medical school here for 10 of them, she's just gone off and created her own practice. I like her. She's short, east indian without the heavy accent, and has a great chair-side manner. Turns out I'm 14 pounds lighter than I thought I was, but still 100 pounds over what I should be. First thing she said was, "You gotta lose the weight." So I brought up the PCOS and she asked me a bunch of medical history stuff, and got out a lab form. SO I gotta go tomorrow morning and get all kinds of bloodwork done, then go back in 2 weeks. Meantime, she said that my bed can be causing more than half the problem, and encouraged me to go buy a "back bed". So I did. I got a king size therapedic, and it was delivered yesterday. I woke up today hurting like I did two thursdays ago. Steve seems to think that it's because our backs just aren't used to the support, and it should clear up in a couple days. I went back on the Flexoril and Motrin, and came to work. Bleh. Hopefully this will clear up. |
You sure it wasn't from "christening" the new bed?
|
Pretty sure. :P
