Zimbabwe shuts down 'racist' private schools

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../ixportal.html

Zimbabwe's government closed the country's 46 private schools yesterday and sent children away at the start of the new term, arguing that the fees were too high.

Aeneas Chigwedere, the education minister, accused the schools of being "racist" institutions which raised their fees to keep out blacks.

However, the overwhelming majority of children at 45 private schools are black. All but one or two private schools are run as not-for-profit trusts.

"We are dealing with racist schools. They are all former white schools - all racist," he told state television. "They throw Africans out simply by hiking fees."

Among those stopped from attending was President Robert Mugabe's middle child, Robert Jnr, who attends the leading Catholic School, St George's College.

I'll walk him to the plane MYSELF, and throw him a party on the tarmac, if he'd promise me he'd STAY gone....

xoxoxoBruce 06-01-2004 06:15 PM

He shouldn't have to go alone, send Al Sharpton too.;)

ladysycamore 06-01-2004 08:00 PM

As long as we can send Bush and his minions, then I say go for it! :D

Lady Sidhe 06-01-2004 11:00 PM

Ok! That settles it. Who's going to call Jessie, Al, and the Bush bunch? Tell 'em, "LOOK! A CAUSE!. Here's your ticket...go do some good or something...like, ELSEWHERE. C'mon....publicityyyy....go fetch..."*tosses imaginary publicity into the plane*

Mugabe is hard to second guess, he is either the worst leader in the history of africa through sheer stupidity (quite a title when you look at the list) or just standard issue uncaring and cruel.

Damn! That's quite a statement. :eek3:

jaguar 06-02-2004 06:00 AM

If and only if as I stated he thinks he is doing the right thing, I doubt this greatly.

Troubleshooter 06-02-2004 09:31 AM

This is the same guy who killed or ran off all of the farmers in his country and then ignores the hungry cries of his people.

jaguar 06-02-2004 09:35 AM

Oh and booted out the world food program because he claims they can feed themselves. He also gave the white farmers land to people that had no knowledge of farming and had no tools, seed etc.

wolf 06-02-2004 09:35 AM

You forgot, they were white, and in the context of African Nationalism, that makes it all okay.

jaguar 06-02-2004 09:45 AM

well who else are the tinpot dictators going to blame.

xoxoxoBruce 06-02-2004 08:32 PM

Why the USA, of course.:)

Troubleshooter 06-03-2004 07:23 AM

Well, we did give them AIDS so that we could use the treatment/immunization program to invade their country.

uh, ok. proof?

wolf 06-03-2004 12:40 PM

He's being funny.

The evidence runs the other direction, actually, that HIV probably originated in Africa and travelled to the US.

Read "And the Band Played On." It's still a great analysis of the early years of the AIDS Crisis.

A little bit of humor, yes, although their gov't did say that at one point.

And everybody knows it's Canada's fault AIDS is in N. America.

lookout123 06-03-2004 01:15 PM

thanks for pointing out the humor. i must be getting slow in my old age. (just had my 30th) LOL

i'm proven wrong on a lot of things (i'm ok with that, it's called learning) but i thought it had been traced from africa this direction.

Now that is very likely true ...

I'll have to find the name, but wasn't it that homosexual canadian (redundant, I know) steward (male flight attendant for those too young to know the difference)?

wolf 06-04-2004 09:54 AM

Gaetan Dugas. Patient Zero. Steward for Air Canada.

Thank you ma'am.

Dialectic_H 06-09-2004 08:53 PM

Could someone please explain to me the disrespect shown towards Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in the beginning of this thread? What do they have to do with Mugabe?

Just curious....

elSicomoro 06-09-2004 09:05 PM

Lookout made a crack remark (which I thought was great), and some folks made their dislike of Jackson and Sharpton known. This board tends to lean right/libertarian, so the remarks did not surprise me.

I personally like both of them, though I have my concerns about Sharpton.

That's a myth though isn't it?

lookout123 06-09-2004 10:45 PM

i was just being a wise ass. sharpton amuses me and i wish he would have gone further in the race. ( no pun intended) i loved when he asked dean how many minorities he had brought on board.

jackson... i don't know. personally i think he is on one non-stop publicity stunt/shakedown. it is america, so i guess it is his right, but i don't place much value in the things that fall out of his mouth. it is only one incident, but i really love the time that jackson set his crosshairs on NASCAR (no, i'm not a race fan). he cried discrimination because there was only one black driver/team on the circuit, but there were lots of black fans. he started to organize boycotts and a small protest. well NASCAR just wrote his group a check and said "we'll do better." he went away and has not spoken of them since he got his check.

All things like that are subject to revision, both by better science as well as political agendas.

Personally, I just don't like canadians. ...with their funny flapping heads and their little beady eyes...

Arliquin 06-16-2004 05:12 AM

I went to one such school in Zimbabwe. An old traditionalist private school that produced men of such character that would seem boasting if I got started. What a great pity is all I can say; the education in these schools was some of the last of it's kind - they saught to make the complete man. Something a dictator can do without.
