anyone else have gmail?

Just curious. I got an invite last night, just wondering if anyone had any experience yet.

smoothmoniker 06-13-2004 11:59 PM

is it live? I signed up to be notified when it went online for the public, and haven't heard anything yet.

no it's not live, but there invitations flying around all over the place

just curious if anyone had any experiences yet

just fyi, I set mine up Sunday morning, and it's already 26% full :D

glatt 06-14-2004 11:12 AM

so if YOU have gmail, can you invite others to join? Like, maybe people on the cellar?

Carbonated_Brains 06-14-2004 11:14 AM

Google sends the only invitations, the best you can do is attempt to trade or buy someone else's gmail account.

Archer 06-14-2004 11:41 AM

while google is the one officially sending out the invites, they give them to individual users to invite people

I've gotten a couple of invites to give out so far, it seems the more the account is used the more invites you get to send out.

Undertoad 06-14-2004 09:15 PM

Just got the invite myself... probably for being an adwords buyer on our behalf. You could figure out what I put at gmail dot com. My main motivation was to preserve the username (undertoad). I dunno how much I'll remember to check it though...

xoxoxoBruce 06-14-2004 09:45 PM

Could you copyright it or something, UT?

elSicomoro 06-14-2004 09:54 PM

This is the mail service that is going to show ads based on what your messages contain, right?

smoothmoniker 06-14-2004 10:25 PM

yup. as previously vetted.

Am I the only one tht has zero interest in this?
I've got about 6 invites for Orkut but there is no way in hell I'm filling out a profile of me that detailed linked to my name for no particular benifit.

Troubleshooter 06-15-2004 10:06 AM

Yahoo is playing catch up now. They just boosted their mail account size to 100 MB on free accounts.

...and my Yahoo Plus account went up to 2GB. But of course, it's not free... $20/year.

wolf 06-15-2004 11:01 PM

Maybe it's just shakedown cruise issues, but I'm finding the new, improved, huge mailbox YahooMail to be grindingly slow.

breakingnews 06-21-2004 10:20 AM

I'm really a huge fan of gmail. I love the thread-style messaging, and it's got all sorts of pretty colors.

I'm hesistant about switching all my addresses over though, because I like using Yahoo's addy book and calendar.

*Sigh* I guess it's been overloading though, because none of google's sites are working this morning.

Fucking internet ...

hot_pastrami 06-22-2004 12:28 AM

Well, I just got an invite to GMail. I am a special boy. They don't allow underscores in their usernames, though, so I had to settle for hot.pastrami@gmail.com.

First impressions... clean interface, snappy response time. I like the reply box being at the bottom of a received message, and I like the conversation view. It seems a bit short on customization options, but they are in Beta, so maybe there are more on the way. And I don't see any way to import mail or consolidate mailboxes as Yahoo Plus allows, so GMail won't be my primary contact address, barring any upcoming changes in that direction.

So overall, it has lots of nifty new ideas, and a lot of potential. Here's hoping... the guys at Google are clever sons of bitches.

Mine is ptireland@gmail.com and I've only had it for a few minutes, but it seems ok. I use a lot of web based email addresses so I think I'll be able to judge the features pretty well. I like the "label" system so far. Most other web-based mail systems will allow you to format your messages (font, color, background, etc.) but this seems to be plain text only which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the flexibility to do such formatting is nice to have.

elSicomoro 06-22-2004 09:15 AM

I only have a Yahoo account b/c of My Yahoo and YIM. Earthlink has web-based e-mail, so I haven't had a need for a web-based account in 5 years.

Beestie 06-22-2004 02:13 PM

Here's a site with some info about Gmail.

Gmail is too creepy

breakingnews 06-24-2004 11:13 AM

Anyone want an account?

I have a million invites to send, and no nerdy friends to whom I can send.

If you want a gmail invite, pls email me at chris.wang220 (@) gmail.com.

Radar 06-24-2004 12:03 PM

My cousin needs one. I still haven't gotten invites to give out. His email address is plastik_lazee@hotmail.com

Thanks again.

Beestie 06-24-2004 12:23 PM

Radar - I'd mask that email address if I were you. put brackets around the @ or spell out "at".

glatt 06-24-2004 12:32 PM

Hey Breaking news, thanks. (He just sent me an invite.)

Now I've got Gmail. And the username I hoped for.

jinx 06-24-2004 12:32 PM

Thanks Chris!

Pi 06-26-2004 03:29 AM

I'd like having gmail. If somebody still has an invitation : pmajerus (@) internet.lu
Thx

glatt 06-28-2004 11:48 AM

I just found out that thousands of people are selling invitations to Gmail on E-Bay. They are going for about $1 each, when they are selling at all.

Gmail invitations on E-Bay

jane_says 07-05-2004 08:17 PM

A friend on another message board kindly gave me an invite, but my husbnad would like on as well, if anyone has one to give. His email address is mdolfan67@yahoo.com. Didn't want to pester anyone with a mail from me in case you've gotten thousands of requests already.

Thanks to anyone who can help. :)

wolf 07-05-2004 09:24 PM

I must say that I don't get the desire for the invites ... it's just another free email address, right? And one that has some security/privacy issues attached.

What's the big deal?

Beestie 07-05-2004 10:04 PM

I went to sign up for one (what the heck - if nothing else, its a gig of free backup space for files I might want to retrieve from elsewhere). So I started to register with all my bogus info and when I'm all done, it tells me that my security settings are too high (not too high for yahoo mail, netscape mail and a few other accounts, tho) - apparently, it couldn't dig deep enough into my computer and told me to lower the bar.

The stuff from gmailIsWeird.com started getting to me and I thought man is this an email signup or an anal probe and ditched the whole idea.

Agreed. Comcast gives me a bunch of accounts and one on Yahoo for crap. Why do I need more? I have a feeling there's shit I don't know :eyebrow:

Too late, man. It already knows who/where you are. It's coming to get you. :ninja:
