Massive failure causes data loss!!

What a night it's been; from 7 pm to 11:30 pm the Cellar's been down, along with everything else on its server, and all messages from approximately the last 24 hours are gone. That includes all private messages written during that time. Just gone!

The suspicion right now is a hardware failure leading to a unpredictable system during a disk write, causing very drastic filesystem corruption, and I had to re-create several sections of the server tonight and reload them from backup. And then I had an "issue" with mysql which kept me busy the last hour and a half. Turns out my restore method crunched a few permissions...

Aaannnnyway, sorry about the loss, and I'm going to rewrite my IotD now...

Lemme put that in plain English for everyone:

UT spilled some champagne on the server causing a small electrical fire that he then tried to put out with Velveeta fondue.

Bottom line: UT's gonna take the plastic cushion covers off the couch and put them on the server instead. The couch will henceforth be covered with back issues of InfoWorld :)

Toad! ALL THAT WORK! Hope you're not too devestated. Course, I am. I had gone from a Neophyte-in-Training to something like an Agitated Agitator in a matter of a few hours! Dern it! Hope things start looking up and thanks for a great place to be! :)

wolf 07-16-2004 12:00 AM

Dammit, but that sucks!!

(I had posted many brilliant things, as had many others here ... luckily I got to see a lot of them before they turned to vapor.)

At least it wasn't an attack outage like from that webscapel asswipe (wasn't he the one?)

marichiko 07-16-2004 12:03 AM

Thank you for letting me know that I had not gone insane. I got on the board just now, and it was like being instantly transported to some time about 24 hours ago - like backwards deja vu, remebering things that haven't happened yet or WAS I remembering them? Sounds like you may be pulling an all nighter, UT. I'll light a candle in my window for you. ;)

You learn the best life's lesson's from the most unlikely of people...patients will usually show you exactly what NOT to do. I used to work as an Occupational Health Nurse for a large (3,800 employees) steel making company. They did a LOT of strange things in that thar coke plant, but they did even better stuff at home. One guy doused his brush with gasoline, lit the match and--WHOOSH!--He was OK but he couldn't come to work for a good while. Miss those guys... :)

Catwoman 07-16-2004 03:40 AM

Thought I was going mad too. Do you think there's any chance of recovering the losses?

Brianna, it's great that you are so enthusiastic about the Cellar, but it's not a contest to see who can post the most. I don't think I've ever seen anyone post as many posts in a single day as you have.

Trilby 07-16-2004 08:11 AM

I know. I am freaking out due to mid-life crisis. I've left my "rock"--my career because I just cannot do it anymore. sorry. will be better.

jaguar 07-16-2004 08:26 AM

That makes two, you in advertising as well?

wolf 07-16-2004 09:48 AM

She's a nurse, I believe. (We PM'd before the crash, and it's in her profile)

Elspode 07-16-2004 12:02 PM

I think it was my fault. I'm cursed. My domain host has been down for going on three days, and I can't get email through my primary account. The funniest part of the whole thing is that I got the domain in the first place because of my ISP's shaky email service.

UT, thanks for the stellar work as always. You are truly a God of the Internet.

As far as all my brilliant posts being lost...I think we all know better than that. They aren't brilliant, and being lost is probably a good education for them as I made sure they didn't have any bread crumbs on them before they got lost.

elSicomoro 07-16-2004 08:53 PM

My DSL was down all night last night...hmmm...

xoxoxoBruce 07-16-2004 10:35 PM

Comcast was out for me, also. Went down soon after the Cellar came back on. On the lighter side, someone emailed me that they couldn't get the Cellar. I told them I was posting when it went down about 5 pm. UT says it was about 7 pm. I wasn't even aware how long I'd been on the board, which shows how time flies when you're having fun.

lumberjim 07-17-2004 12:34 AM

I didn't do it  :headshake

Griff 07-17-2004 07:44 AM

*cough* um I hate to mention this after all the crap you just went through... I'm not seeing all the emoticons again... and you know how well I pick up on nonverbals anyway... Does it muck things up when I check in from other locations?

Undertoad 07-17-2004 08:07 AM

Are you in fact you hosing your referrer variable!

I can't help unless you WANT to be helped!

Griff 07-17-2004 08:19 AM

he he... I'll avoid logging on from the other locations bro. Or I could slangify the other...

Undertoad 07-17-2004 08:25 AM

The other locations have nothing to do with it really.

The system decides whether you are worthy to get the smilie by looking at a string that your browser sends along as a part of the HTTP protocol: the "Referrer". For example, the "Referrer" for all the images on this page are the page itself, showthread.php from cellar.org.

If your Referrer string doesn't say cellar.org, the system assumes that you are getting the smilies via some other site, and in some cases, doesn't send them along. 99.9% of the time, if a Referrer string doesn't contain cellar.org, the page requesting it is somewhere else on the net and is stealing them.

It's probable that you have set some hardass privacy setting to mess up the Referrer string, maybe even without realizing it. Some firewalls probably screw it up on purpose. But it's part of the protocol and therefore my judgement that this is broken on your end. Rudely breaking the protocol is not the solution.

I will need valid referrers from Cellar readers if I ever want to prevent image theft from the Cellar. This is not a minor inconvenience for me... it's an increasing problem.

Griff 07-17-2004 08:32 AM

I'll look and then get frustrated and then have Pete fix our privacy settings. Thanks man.

Undertoad 07-17-2004 08:36 AM

Let us know if you find a solution on your side so that everyone can benefit. There is a tiny chance it's your ISP causing the breakage and if that's the case I will try to work out how to fix it from my side.

wolf 07-17-2004 09:49 AM

Just add cellar.org to your list of trusted sites (where it should be anyway!!)

Griff 07-17-2004 09:51 AM

I shut off Norton IS, they're the problem. I'm gonna see if I can change a setting.

wolf 07-17-2004 09:57 AM

in Norton Internet Security ... go to Options >NIS. This will bring up a tabbed menu. Select the Web Content Tab. Click Add Site. add the cellar. Your problem is the default permission for "Information about visited sites" ... click "permit"

Click OK and you're done.

Griff 07-17-2004 10:17 AM

I think we're running a different version wolf. We did add cellar but it didn't fix the problem. I had to disable the privacy control to get it to work... It used to work before new cellar came on-line and I had cellar on trusted before but it wasn't there when I checked... shrug werks now. thanks back to the tour page...Lance won the stage :D
