A Nice, Quiet Bar
My great search for a quiet bar to have a drink has finally led me to the most peaceful one, yet.
http://fox.org/~vince/photos/out/brewster/brewster.jpg That's not rot, that's "quaint". http://fox.org/~vince/photos/out/brewster/bar.jpg Such a comfortable bar! It seats around six. Oh, watch your head! http://fox.org/~vince/photos/out/brewster/women.jpg A skylight addition, probably added in after the place was built. http://fox.org/~vince/photos/out/brewster/window.jpg You couldn't believe the quiet. In a town where phosphate mining was king and the entire town was sold off when the company went bankrupt in 1971, the only sound there was the dull *thud* of explosions at another mine, miles away. Thats creepy-quiet. |
Looks like it's *open* year round too! ;)
|
And it's not smoke filled. :)
|
No smoke, but it wasn't all that cool, either! Check out where the air conditioner used to be. The vines' struggle to get inside looks almost violent!
http://fox.org/~vince/mud/waterhole/ac.jpg But, hey, thats why all the windows were shot out. Nice breeze flowing through. http://fox.org/~vince/mud/waterhole/shotoutglass.jpg |
Somebody worked hard at breaking those glass blocks. A small caliber bullet or even a hammer, won't do it without multiple blows. :eek6:
|
Such is the beauty of rural America: everything is up for target practice. Stop signs, fence posts, train crossing signals... the rate that everything has to be replaced must be amazing.
The glass and meter on this pole are brand new, but the box its in is ancient. Can you guess why? http://fox.org/~vince/mud/brewster/DSC_2836.jpg |
Those are great pictures. I love pictures that show how nature will reclaim a space if it's left alone.
|
I like how despite all the destruction and aging, the sign for the women's bathroom looks like it was painted yesterday. Nature knows what's important.

I noticed that while there, too, and I'm confused why. For awhile, I thought maybe the camera flash caused it with reflection or something, but I do remember noticing how good that paint looked compared to everything else while I was tromping around the muddy floor. The really amazing part is how long this place has sat along the highway, abandoned, and how little damage there is. In fact, there are no signs that anyone else has been there. The lights that fell from the rotten ceiling are in the same place they've been since they hit the ground. Not a drop of spaypaint, no graffiti, nothing carved up, no beer bottles, no needles, no meth lab, etc. It should give you a good indication of how far out in the middle of nowhere this place is. ...or maybe "women" is actually graffiti? |
Why was the meter replaced? What's being powered?
|
Nearby railroad track crossing. Judging from the bullet holes and "pang marks", the thing gets hit quite often.
|
That is one neat-o, cool looking place. I'll bet there are a lot of ghosties about!! Drunk ghosties! What fun! Kitsune, is this place in Florida?

Indeed, it is. You can read a little bit about it, here. I've actually gotten in touch with someone that was born in Brewster (in 1928!) and she has some good stories and information about what the place was once like. It appears to have been quite the model of a company town. http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/fl/.../Brewster1.jpg The smokestack, the very first thing built in the town in 1920, still stands. http://fox.org/~vince/mud/brewster/DSC_2829.jpg |
Wow--so cool! Ghost's abound! Did it "feel" that way--? You know, haunted, lost, reaching into the past...all that?

"Yes." That is about all I will comment on that at this time. I didn't stick around long because of feelings and occurances along those lines. |
Oh, please--?? Did you get freaked-out? TELL! :stickpoke:

All buildings have a feel to them and this bar was neither good or bad. Regardless, there was something oddly edgey to the whole experience. I love exploring abandoned buildings and some of them feel very positive and comfortable, as if you could play around in them all day and never feel threatened, but this bar... there was something "wrong" with it, specifically the cooler. I pushed aside the aged plastic walk-in refridgerator flaps and... it wasn't good. I feel strange for stating it that way, because I'm not one to think along "those lines". What happened during my exploration and my feelings were all part of an overactive imagination, I'm sure. |
Thanks for indulging me, Kitsune. Don't be too sure about the "overactive imagination" thing, though. I believe places/buildings can absorb energy...ever been to Gettysburg? That is one eerie place.

I believe places/buildings can absorb energy...
I was always certain that this was bunk and that it is always the product of one's imagination or just the general surroundings. For instance, on entering the bar, I was sure that it was not a place where happy celebrations occured and I couldn't say why. But then it becomes a bit obvious: its a mining town bar, the town shut down, I know the bar outlasted the town by at least six months, etc. There sure as hell were some bad times there as workers stared into their drinks and pondered where they were going to go and where they were going to find work. Yet, the overall feeling that some places instill into me is amazing. It is, without question, downright creepy now and then. Old buildings are wonderful in a way and I can't, for whatever reason, chalk all of it up to the surroundings. A lot of the emotions and feelings from old buildings just seem to seep out of the walls, sometimes. And, if you close your eyes and listen carefully... Don't be too sure about the "overactive imagination" thing, though. Oh, I'm not. I just keep saying that for my own benefit. No doubt: some places get to me in weird ways I don't feel comfortable admitting. :) |
You can see the "hand" in the hand stenciled signs.
|
Never happens to you, warch? Maybe you just don't have your funk-on. |
Oh, my funk be on. I'm saying, what adds to the eerieness for me is the trace of someone stenciling the signs. The trace of their hand and eye. Just a bit crooked. And when you enter any abandoned space there are those traces- human stuff that falls into the cracks.

I find it reassuring,... the trace evidence. :)

I love it, to find things like that. The kind of things that make you wonder who did it, why they did it the way they did, and what caused them to leave and where they are now. The bar was made using minimal materials, mostly playwood and thin coats of paint. I'm certain the owner or builder never intended anyone to take an interest in it after they left, but I find the place full of unheard stories and I think thats cool. Of course, I'm weird that way, which is why I love old, abandoned buildings. Even if no one lives in them or uses them anymore, they leave plenty of things behind, often unintentionally. I'll never know who ran that bar, if they're still alive, and where they went. |
You and I would travel well together, Kit. Reading your descriptions of your thoughts and feelings is exactly how I view old structures and places. I drive my wife crazy because I like to stop at all the old Civil War battlefields I can find, most of which are just big fields and treelines here in the Midwest. She finds it boring, I find it absorbing, haunting.

A nice quiet bar has no wind passing through and no one passing wind.

No-that's a great idea, lookout123. Could you do that Kitsune? I'll betcha something weird DID happen in the cooler area. How can we find out?
|
can you google old newsstories to see if there were any events reported there.
Google isn't going to have anything on this, because I seriously doubt the net will. The bar hasn't been in operation since, at the most, 1972 or so. I'm going to drop by the nearby museum and county records office. They have there, I've been told, old articles and maps for purchase along with all the standard stuff. I'll check there, if you like. |
You can talk to former residents. ;)
|
Very interesting series of photos Kitsune. How is the water quality there? Better than at home? :)
|
You can talk to former residents.
Already have, xoxoxoBruce -- you found the previous resident I've been in contact with. Born in 1928, she has plenty of stories about the town! How is the water quality there? Better than at home? Around old phosphate stacks? I guess you could say the water is a bit "tart". :3eye: The big fear here, these days, is with all the rain we've had the stacks are going to overflow. Oh, and we have two Tropical Storms/Hurricanes headed our way in the next 96 hours. Great. |
Maybe the cooler was creepy because it was a dark, enclosed space with the only exit obscured by old plastic. I'm just sayin.
Actually I've never been anywhere that "felt wrong". I've been with people that have felt it. Example: A friend lived in a house where someone committed suicide. Went to visit him once with a girl I was crushing on. She didn't know anything about the suicide but was insistent that we leave shortly after arriving. Hre reasoning? The place didn't "feel right". Maybe I'm just not sensitive to that sort of thing, but I do lean towards believing it's all in a person's head. |
Yeah, I thought that 4 page list of former residents, with their present addresses, might turn up someone near you. But like the WW II vets, I'm sure they're dropping off fast. :(
Oh, and don't make any plans, we Cellarites are planning plenty of work (research) for you. :haha: |

Hi 狐. I finally made an account! I think we all have our boogeyman places. I just think it's interresting when they begin to overlap. Ĝis rivedon. :3_eyes: |
Like the back hall in the back of the basement of the Chemistry building? but only if you're facing the north exit?
Screw you. I don't like it because that back hall just smells funny because of the vomit bucket -- I never get the creeps there. ;) |
