Best Musical Ever!!

After long and hard (heh, heh--I said "long", and, "hard"!) consideration I believe that West Side Story was/is the Greatest Musical of All-Time. What say the Jets? :corn:

Besides, "here come the Jets, better run, better hide..."--etc.

bluesdave 10-20-2004 06:51 PM

The Oscar Peterson Trio does a wonderful version of West Side Story. I ordered the album from Amazon a month ago, but they keep sending me emails saying they are having trouble sourcing it. I'll be damned disappointed if they cancel it on me.

I think most of the big musicals from the 30s through the 50s were pretty special. I wouldn't say that any one of them was the "best", but some were better than others. I think modern musicals lack the charm of the classics.

cowhead 10-20-2004 06:56 PM

wow that's a toughie... I mean sure it's a 'modern' adaptation of romeo and juliette.. but..

I'm a big fan of 'into the woods'
'sweeny todd' (the demon barber of fleet street)
nightmare before christmas (which is an awesome musical... )and *ducking* so is Alladin...

but the best ever... I dunno I might be a shark...

warch 10-20-2004 07:09 PM

O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!
too many classic songs.

Radar 10-20-2004 07:10 PM

The Music Man

warch 10-20-2004 07:14 PM

Point!
Music man does have the cute little lisping Opie belting out a ode to Gary, Indiana. :) Not to mention featuring sir Buddy Hackett.

Happy Monkey 10-20-2004 07:26 PM

Ye gawads!

warch 10-20-2004 07:37 PM

Shaboopie to you too.

smoothmoniker 10-20-2004 08:14 PM

for pure, emotional wrenching of the guy, my vote is for les miz.

The Producers

You just can't beat a showtune called "Springtime for Hitler"

:D

Okay, serious answer this time ...

Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita are my top two favorites.

Now, if you mean traditional musical (i.e., the kind with lots of talking between songs) I'm going to have to go with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Or maybe Doctor Doolittle.

melidasaur 10-20-2004 11:54 PM

Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street! A musical about eating people... can't get better than that.

Catwoman 10-21-2004 04:09 AM

I go with sm on les miz. The West End production is amazing.
And the lesser known 'Bouncers' which is hilarious.
And Chicago for the choreography.

LabRat 10-21-2004 10:57 AM

Personally, i really really disliked Les Miserables. Not sure why, but overall suffered huge dissapointment once I'd seen it. Beats me why so many people think it's so spectacular. Last night I went to see the Wycliffe Gordon Jazz Quartet http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/events/wycliffe.html and that rocked SO much more...

Elspode 10-21-2004 01:11 PM

Different day, different best musical -

Today, it is "The Sound of Music".

Radar 10-21-2004 02:10 PM

melidasaur had a very good call with Sweeny Todd. I thought we could only mention one. I loved the stage version that had Angela Lansbury.

hums....it stings a little, but not for long....

TheSnake 10-21-2004 02:24 PM

I like the Sound of Music. Good music, plus they escape from the Nazi's.

Radar 10-21-2004 02:35 PM

South Pacific, Dr. Doolittle, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, and The King and I are pretty good too.

Clodfobble 10-21-2004 09:00 PM

"Miss Saigon" and "Assassins."

ladysycamore 10-28-2004 10:39 AM

OMG..."A Chorus Line". Love, love, Loovvvvee this one. :D

Elspode 10-28-2004 03:40 PM

Whoops...today, the greatest musical of all time is The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Well, yes. Yes it is.

alphageek31337 10-29-2004 03:45 AM

Cannibal! The Musical, by far.

Griff 10-29-2004 03:58 PM

um... Springtime for Hitler anyone?

lookout123 10-29-2004 07:18 PM

the classic "Dr Zeus" forces me to say that my favorite musical is the Planet of the Apes, on the Simpsons.

Undertoad 10-30-2004 08:29 AM

That one was awesome L123!

Did we have this discussion before and I brought up "Streetcar! The Musical"?

SteveDallas 10-30-2004 08:33 AM

This is so tough.

I would have to say "Oklahoma!" as the best "classic" musical (with My Fair Lady a close second), and .. modern... hmmm between The Producers and Sweeney Todd. A tough choice.

This year's Tony winner, Avenue Q, is beyond fantastic. Already seen it twice this fall.

While it features fuzzy Sesame Street knock-off puppets and does not have the sophisticated charm of a traditional blockbuster musical, the show is quite possibly the most entertaining I have ever come across. It's a complete satire on life - the jests and pokes at how we act and go about in our middle-class ways are hauntingly true. It will make you seriously consider dulling the edge on your attitude - while pissing yourself because your stomach hurts from laughing too much. Great way to spend an afternoon/evening here in NYC.

Huckamuck 10-31-2004 11:36 PM

Guys and Dolls! The Broadway version...not the shitty Brando movie.

wolf 11-01-2004 12:14 AM

I now have to nominate Team America: World Police in this category.

Oh, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I watched it at work tonight, danced the Time Warp and everything. I was running late and didn't have time to fully prepare, so no spray bottle, rice, toast, or toilet paper. But I held my lighter up during "There's a Light."

I am dying to see this, just to sing along with "The Internet Is For Porn" and "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist."

Elspode 11-01-2004 02:21 PM

I watched Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical last night while treating the little trickers, and although not at all in the running for all time greatest musical, it did have some nice moments.

Most shocking was the fact that David Hasselhoff actually did a good job as Jekyll/Hyde, and apparently can sing.

wolf 11-02-2004 12:27 AM

I think the Germans discovered him some time ago.

So much for my people actually being the Master Race.

Elspode 11-02-2004 12:37 PM

Yes...precisely the reason that I was surprised to find him posessed of any talent whatsoever...
