Favorite Halloween Entertainment
'Tis the season after all ... Since Brianna covered Halloween Music
I have a list of Must See movies and TV specials ... It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown Something Wicked This Way Comes The Exorcist The Legend of Hell House (The one with Roddy McDowell) All those William Castle classics that I love and derided in the "Worst Movies" thread The Haunting (original version only please, not the lame remake) I'll probably think of more as people add to this ... |
Rocky Horror Picture Show
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (all Peanuts are Classic) 'Salem's Lot the first 'Halloween' movie And I always like to read a lot of Poe about this time of year. |
Roaming the streets and screaming at little children, "Gimme your candy you little bastards!" is more than enough entertainment for me on Halloween.*
*--Rho and I don't do much for Halloween...maybe we'll go out to dinner. |
I've never been into horror movies or stuff like that.
But "The Great Pumpkin" is obligatory. |
Ooh look!!! A new one just in time for Halloween!!!!!

I'm a big fan of Nightmare Before Christmas. |
Talk about a wimpy Buffy! She should grab a stake and kick some evil ass!

Only 1/2 hour left of this infernal jumping up every two minutes to answer the door!
Trick or Treat my ass! These kids need to get a job! ;) |
Brianna, why are kids coming to your door tonight??
|
Oh, sorry! It's trick or treat night--aka Beggar's night---they come to get candy.
|
...Nope, still confused. In my world tonight is Halloween, when all the kids come to the door screaming "Trick or treat!" Where do you live again?

Clodfobble, I'm in southwest Ohio--a little north of Cincinnati. Every community here has a different trick or treat night--ours was last night.
|
Bri is an American, but she may live in a municipality where they moved Trick or Treating to Saturday night to avoid offending the Christians any more than absolutely necessary.
At least...I *think* she's an American. Bri? |
Oh, yes, I am an American. I don't know exactly why they move trick or treat but they do. Cincinnati has trick or treat on the 31st no matter what day it falls on but my suburb usually tries to have it on a friday or saturday night. You are correct, though, I do live in a pretty conservative area; it might be because of the Christians--there's a whole lot of alternatives to the evil, mind-controlling bacchanal that is Beggar's Night--like "Harvest Parties" (I've news for them, it's still all Pagan) but my absolute favorite is the "Hallowed King" party one Southern Baptist congregation holds every Halloween!
|
Ah, I think the difference is I don't live in a suburb--the idea of people in my neighborhood somehow getting together and deciding to change trick-or-treat night and then somehow conveying this information to everyone, and actually convincing everyone to do it... it just wouldn't happen. We're not anywhere near that unified or organized where I live.

I will be slaving over hot psychotics tonight, but will have in hand too many scary movies to watch in the course of a shift including Creepshow, The Legend of Hell House, Dementia 13, Something Wicked This Way Comes, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

"Something Wicked" is a superb film. It perfectly captures that elusive Ray Bradbury quality in a way that no other film ever has. It is the first movie I ever saw with Johnathan Price in it...he was *amazing* as Mr. Dark.
This is a film that is scary in a way that far too films are. It is scary because your imagination scares hell out of you, not because you see some graphically severed head rolling toward you. "Something Wicked" is not only one of my favorite Halloween films, it is one of my favorite films, period. |
