Worried...
I just found out a few minutes ago that the division of Boeing I work for was just sold to L3. There have been whispered rumors floating around for awhile. First they said Ratheon was going to buy us and then L3. There were a lot of layoffs which I think was an attempt by Boeing to make us look leaner and meaner to sell us.
Now I'm uncertain as to whether I'll have a job anymore, and worried I won't be able to find one soon. Computer work is hard to get during the holidays. I was just starting to put together a few bucks for my hot dog cart too. Man this sucks. |
I know I don't have to tell you this, but get your resume up on monster and the other sites NOW. Don't wait till you're let go.
I don't have a resume anymore, and I can't remember all the places I've consulted at in the last 12 years
i thought you were going to hang it all up and peddle dogs?...or was that to be a sideline gig?
I was going to sell dogs. I just decided that, but I didn't have enough money for the cart yet. The cart will cost me about $7,000 plus a couple of grand for supplies, health permit, dmv registration, business license, etc. so I need 10k to do it. My plan was to start saving for it now.

Yes it does. My husband lost his job back in February of this year after his division closed. He had been employed there for 22 years. He is still looking for work. A decent severance package helped us a bit. Things are getting tense around here though because he still has not found a job. Its crucial to start looking immediatly for another. Dont wait to post your resume, assuming that you can nearly wait for your for a severance package to run out like my goofy husband did. Best of luck to ya! |
I'm a contractor. No severance package. No sick days. No Holiday Pay, etc. :( :greenface :thumbsdn:
That sucks man. Hopefully L3 will realize they need to have people to actually build stuff. L3 bought Link locally (Binghamton NY area). They still have a presence here but I don't know the numbers.

I hate the word "synergistic." Who started using that in press releases anyway? It sounds way too Borgish. "Resistance is futile. You will be synergized." |
What makes you think you won't just be employed by the new management?
jag has a point. Contractors are usually cheaper than directs, aren't you?
Good luck. Being unemployed sucks. |
Cheer up, Radar! You can always deliver telephone books! Sorry to hear about you job difficulties (in case you've started reading my posts again). ;)
We just had an all hands meeting, and the man who is in charge of our division and 19 others has said they like the team in place and the management and want to keep it as is, and when I asked about whether they do insource our outsource I.T. he said they like to have their own people in house. So I could end up getting a perm job which would be ok.

Like this? I don't see any balloons or confetti. This is the Boeing VP giving the news.
Hey, not sa bad after all, what did I say? be happy!
Cartoon bubble contest for Mr. Shiney shoes?
"Show of hands. Who speaks Punjabi?"
Bruce, where did you get that pic? That's the location where I work. I recognize the cafeteria and the people.
Sure is, that's the Boeing VP explaining the sale to all hands. It was posted along with the story of the sale on the Boeing intranet news site.
And you thought I couldn't find your sorry ass. Bwahahahahahahaha. |
Do we get to play "where's Radar" with this pic now?
I didn't attend the meeting. I wasn't there, but I was there today. Yesterday they wanted me to rig some of the computers so if anyone started up solitaire, freecell, minesweeper, or pinball a window will popup telling them the computer is for business use only.
Why don't they just take those programs off of the machines? Mine is game-free at work.
Because then they wouldn't know who is trying to play.
That's just one of radars clients silly, his more regular client is NASA. (rigging comp's against space invaders)

careful there radar, though. i'm in the oil & gas industry here in houston and have seen that "feel good" speech before only to see entire crews let go. update the ol' resume.....just in case.....
on a different note, i fly with a guy who works for NASA here in houston (clear lake) and he's more than happy to see O'keefe go b/c of all the cutbacks he'd done to "revamp" the space program......is this going to have any bearing on your job? Sean O'keefe to leave NASA |
I'm updating the resume just in case. But the way it stands, I've got a good year of work disconnecting them from the Boeing network, building a helpdesk from scratch, creating a new solution for the timecard system and the accounting system, building a new domain for the network, new email servers, etc. and by the time it's all done, they'll be ready to update all the desktop computers with new hardware, and new and improved images created by me. Probably with XP instead of 2k so they can use hyperthreading. The deal didn't include the buildings because Boeing wanted way too much money for them so new security doors will have to be added for all the buildings and one of the buildings will be split in half so Boeing can lease out the other half. We'll all still share the gym, the courtyard, and cafeteria, but we'll have to badge in to any of the buildings instead of just at the gate to get in. That reminds me, I'll have to setup the badge and ID people with a new system too.

hehe, yeah, sounds like you'll be there awhile!
