GuestMap
I have often thought it would be nice to see in a single area where all Cellarites are from, in the form of a map, but didn't know how this would be possible. Then I stumbled across this guys (http://home.comcast.net/~pdconner/enter.htm)webpage, and it has a GuestMap on it. It's cool because it has the whole world, people add themselves and a comment if they like, and you can zoom up on an area that has lots of icons like pennsylvania would have for the cellar. Would it be possible to look into trying something like this? I am quite ignorant about this stuff, but thanks for your consideration :)

I can't see installing that Bravenet one, but I found another one not quite as good:
put up your own entry now If we like this I could link it in from the front page. |
The problem with either map is that we'll have a ton of people standing on top of the Philadelphia area...at the very least, we'd need an inset map of SE Pennsylvania. :)
I saw one not too long ago where the site operator had a NYC subway map, and you clicked on a particular stop and saw the people that lived near that subway stop. That was pretty neat...I'm considering doing something similar for a Philadelphia board that I moderate on. |
Check out the "Navigation" map on http://www.ourcongress.org/. Something like that could work.
|
All we need is a development budget.
|
Since this was my idea, and I haven't yet donated my share to the tip jar, I'd be happy to add some $$ for people's efforts...
|
Probably not enough to acheive the quality of ourcongress.org though. That's like a 20-hour job at $80/hour.
|
So, do ya think the current half-lame GuestMap is good enough to link from the front page?
|
Sure, why not?
|
It can't be edited, can it?
*lament* I'm lost forever. Where am I, Utah? Nevada? <i>I donn't knoooww!</i> |
Not by mere mortals but I can go in and remove the entry and you could make another one, if you like.
|
i think this is really just a test of our geography skills. some of us aren't doing well.

hmmm. that's a lot of aluminum cans at only $0.05 apeice here in Iowa...I'd have to walk a lot of interstate to collect that. Forget I mentioned anything  |
As I recall, theres a lot of interstate in Iowa, and its mostly flat and straight. You can do that in a few hours. :)
|
SHHHHHH!!!! hush you!
|
Hee hee. I just had to put my icon on top of the big lump where everybody else was ...
|
I didn't notice you could zoom in until after I placed my icon. So I'm actually off by half a state. Oh well.

Thanks to those who put themselves on the map, we have a nice sampling of people from different areas of the US. Where are the rest of the countries representatives ??

I'm up.
The one you liked is flash, I'm playing with it at the moment, I'm piled under at the moment but I might take this on as a project in a week or two, be quite simple and muchos fun. Personally I'd say 10 hours top but it's a good excuse to play with db backed flash as well. If it's going to be used (obviously it'd have to be good quality) I'll add it to my to-do list. |
great, jag put his up so now there will be splotches of white out all over the globe a year from now. or maybe you'll just have to list yourself as jag1, jag2, etc. we could fill up the map with the new "where's jag" game.
|
hey! I've been in the same place now for a whole 5 months and I doubt I'll be moving for at least another 4.
|
I'd be happy to put a good one up J, but how does Flash communicate with the database?

There are a variety of ways of getting data in and out of flash, LoadVars, in Flash MX+ make is dead easy to grab stuff from php or any other serverside lang (which I also like because I'm very familiar with PHP's DB access code). There's also flash remoting which is a whole app by itself that requires serverside components but using that for this is like using a nuke to crack a wallnut.
Quiet lookout or I'll knock out your walker and hide your bifocals. |

Well if it uses PHP as a middleman, I'm sold. Just let me know what tables it needs!
|
Well I've got it structured, I'll see if I can lay my hands on a copy of vBulletin so I can work out how to hook into it's db call and auth system to save time and make everything cleaner, flash wise I've got some nice big detailed vector maps, time to get to work =D
