Graphical smilies are the devil.

I cannot begin to express my contempt for graphical smiles.

I mean, you type something one way, and the damned computer changes what you say! When I type ':)', I mean ':)'! Thank God most places let you disable them -- but I still think they should be disabled by default.

This random rant brought to you by Juju, and the letter 'G'. Thank you..

dave 12-29-2001 10:56 PM

How cute! You use Gaim!

verbatim 12-30-2001 06:40 PM

I use gaim. Nothing wrong with it, and it makes some of the best logfiles around.

But, just for the records, Trillian does that too.

Undertoad 12-30-2001 07:40 PM

I actually agree about the smilies, and I tried briefly to find the option to make the default "off", but in a moment of lameness, I couldn't find it! I think I'll just leave it where it is... hey, I turned off avatars, be thankful.

dave 12-30-2001 07:52 PM

I use Gaim. It's great. I keep in close touch with the developers. Know the new option to have the alias be shown in the tab? That was mine.

I was refering to his "and the letter G" comment. It used to be in the About screen for Gaim, but was removed a while ago.

jaguar 12-30-2001 08:06 PM

what?
smilies are an important part of internet conversatoin, they start to make up for what text lacks in comparison to voice - tone.

dave 12-30-2001 08:28 PM

Graphical smilies, jaggy. Graphical.

elSicomoro 12-31-2001 12:41 AM

AOLIM does the same thing. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to see if there is a way to turn them off.

dave 12-31-2001 12:49 AM

*follows in sycamore's nightly routine*

There is. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to tell you how. :)

like a little clown. :)

jennofay 01-02-2002 10:44 PM

ok, that sucked... it should have looked like this... :0) with a smaller nose (the letter "o" ... of course im being a lazy sack of shit and didnt bother to preview my reply before posting it, so thats what i get...

Avatars? Ohmighod...I don't know whether to be grateful or to retch.
I'll have to do both. One still occasionally sees folks wander into IRC with Microsoft Chat markup:

CLUELESS: **** appears as Gilgamesh

Ardax 01-03-2002 08:07 AM

I don't mind the graphical smilies, they're OK. I just hate that they don't have noses. Noses rule.

:-)

:-P

:-D

:-O

;-)

Narf?

jennofay 01-03-2002 11:41 AM

like i said. there is a lot to be said for things without noses...they are cute and all, but noses give much more realism to things (not that a graphical smilie is 'realistic'....) im a fan of round noses though. :0)

dave 01-03-2002 01:18 PM

I never was a fan of the nose in a smiley, graphical or otherwise. I just prefer them without. I guess it's just personal taste (unlike Pad Gai, which is universally appealing, even to vegetarians, who lust after its amazing rice noodles but can't eat them because they're smothered in perfectly cooked chicken). Mmmm, pad gai. Okay, I'm off topic now. :)

Ardax 01-04-2002 05:50 PM

I guess there's nothing wrong with not liking a nose in your smiley, other than the fact that you're wrong. ;-)

Nic Name 01-04-2002 06:22 PM

Serious Emoticons

Nic Name 01-04-2002 06:26 PM

All my emotions on one page.

Ardax 01-04-2002 10:52 PM

Now that is for people with way too much time on their hands.

jeni 01-04-2002 11:14 PM

the best nose by far is the circular one. : o )

dave 01-05-2002 10:30 AM

Agreed. I also think that the cutest smiley is... well, that one you drew on my "Welcome Home David" paper :)

dave 01-28-2002 01:24 PM

Hahahahahaha. I like http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/images/smilies/eek7.gif - "Who farted?" :)

jaguar 01-28-2002 06:07 PM

Tony! Can you get there here?!

Undertoad 01-28-2002 07:15 PM

I can. But in the middle of a thread called "Graphical smilies are the devil"?

Hmmmmppph.

I suppose it's everyone's choice whether they use it or not.

jaguar 01-29-2002 04:14 AM

*laughz
exactly
you can turn off viewing them if people really hate them, come on...please!
I promise to to randomly fill my posts with them more than once.

Undertoad 01-29-2002 08:40 AM

There, I've added a bunch of em. Not all of em. It's a PITA to do it.

dave 01-29-2002 08:46 AM

dammit!

Not only are we superbly goofy now with all these smilies, but the :whofart: one isn't even there! :rar:

Undertoad 01-29-2002 08:50 AM

Fine, I've added it...

SteveDallas 01-29-2002 09:07 AM

/me sits in the corner quietly, thinking he now has this on his Cellar karma, as well as tits (Sorry Ruthie).

dave 01-29-2002 09:59 AM

So I'm sitting here at work, and there's this foul smell. :whofarted

:P

Tony is cool. :)

Here's to Fahlman

It was 20 years ago today that Scott Fahlman taught the 'Net how to smile.

The IBM researcher has devoted his professional life to artificial intelligence, the practice of teaching computers how to think like humans.

Mr. Fahlman is known for his work with neural networks -- a computer technique designed to mimic the human brain -- and helping develop Common Lisp, a computer language that uses symbols instead of numbers, but the bearded scientist is perhaps best known for a flash of inspiration that helped to define Internet culture, in all of its ungrammatical glory.

On Sept. 19, 1982, Mr. Fahlman typed :-) in an online message.

Nic Name 09-20-2002 11:53 PM

Here is the message including the first smiley.

Damn, jaclyn8700, you're digging deep. :thumb: Found any skeletons?

robsterman1 04-22-2006 10:26 AM

GAIM is great and the smilies that you can use are very worldly and never dull :p
