Dec 22nd, 2016: Yummy Protien

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat... bugs.

Quote:

By now, you’ve probably heard that eating bugs is in your future. Insects are protein-rich
and efficient to farm, and the UN has predicted we’ll largely be surviving off of beetle bites
and caterpillar consommé by 2050. Chefs are already whipping up recipes for curried
grasshoppers, buffalo worm nuggets, and chocolate mealworm spread—although, of course,
the easiest way of tucking in to these delicacies is just eating the insects whole.
So what’s stopping you?
MEAT, burgers, bacon, wings!

Promotional pictures depict a perfect hipster picnic: diners spear grubs and scarf scorpions
alongside hummus, red wine, and a cream-cheese-and-mealworm sandwich.

So Kobayashi decided to make it easier to imagine. The BUGBUG starter set contains five
utensils: two sets of spear-ended chopsticks (one long pair and one short), a paddle for
crushing and scooping, a fork with tiny tines.

Most intriguingly, a set of extremely precise pincers that fit over the bearer’s thumb

I don't care how fancy the tools are, no, just no. :headshake

I'm not the pickiest eater in the world...but no. I already can't abide things that get stuck between the few teeth I have left, and the thought of crunching down a scorpion and then having to pick exoskeleton chunks outta my teeth kills the whole idea for me no matter how they taste or how unavailable traditional meats are by then.

Come to think of it, now that I've had to dart off momentarily on other business, I don't feel so bad about my major objection. My sweetie, for example, will not eat tofu because he finds the texture loathsome. I've had like 3 friends over the years who feel the same about onions. And I've known 3 or 4 people--interestingly enough, all men--who won't eat anything with ginger in or on it because they say to them ginger tastes like soap. I'm thinking it's genetic, like the ability to smell cyanide.

It's actually cilantro, not ginger, that tastes like soap to some folks. I'm one of 'em, but not a man. It's quite common actually - and you're right it is genetic. They've actually identified the gene that those of us who don't like it carry. Go figure. Money well spent on that research?

The way research works, you never know what's going to pay off. You may have an inkling, but you never actually know.

Bite your damn tongue! Cilantro is the spice of life itself.

OK

the taste of my own hot blood is preferable to the taste of those green leaves of soap

xoxoxoBruce 12-22-2016 09:05 PM

At least your blood has alcohol content. ;)
