Definately.

She also reminded me of my niece Sophie in her mannerisms, and that combination of slightness and feistiness.

jimhelm 03-31-2013 10:23 PM

Not so much. Ripley is 5'6" now, at 12 yrs old. strong and solid.

jimhelm 04-01-2013 11:43 AM

Where the hell was Strong Belwas? And why did Selmy reveal his identity?

Happy Monkey 04-01-2013 04:10 PM

In a book, it's easier to not recognize an actor, and they probably didn't want to get in the situation of the audience figuring it out long before the characters.

jimhelm 04-01-2013 05:22 PM

didn't he give him long hair, and a beard, with a hooded cloak? and he's supposed to use a quarter staff, not a dagger.

You're wrong, Jim. You have no idea what you are talking about. And you look like Sean Bean.

do his names rhyme with each other, like shawn bawn?

jimhelm 04-01-2013 10:56 PM

Unf. I look more like strong Belwas at this point

DanaC 04-02-2013 07:54 AM

No. Shawn Been.

footfootfoot 04-03-2013 12:06 AM

Just finished season one.

Question for season 2 watchers and those who read the book, I suppose.
Is this one of those sprawling greasy leviathans of a series that just goes on and on? Or is it going to come to a conclusion soon? Will it be like Cheers where we get to see Arya grow up, get married, have kids, become a grandmother, live to see electricity come to the north, then die peacefully on a farm surrounded by her entire family in a flashback scene while we cut to present day and see the great grandson listing the farm with a realtor and a young yuppie couple moves in and finds a dragon egg in the barn and the whole cycle is repeated?

Is that what's going to happen? Cause I'm just gonna read the plot summary on wikipedia if that's the case.
I see they've signed up for season 4. I'm probably right.

Happy Monkey 04-03-2013 10:37 AM

Arya doesn't seem the marrying type.

Luckily she's got Needle, for the time being.

I don't think so. It does get rather complicated for awhile, but then players start to drop out (e.g. die,) or band together. Each of the Stark kids ends up on extremely different paths as they age. But IMO there's a distinct sense at the end of the most recent book that things are slowly drawing back together for a big conclusion. Don't read the plot summary; DO read the books if you've got the time. The show does a really excellent job so far, but there are always going to be nuances in the book that just can't be transferred to the screen. The books are definitely worth it.

footfootfoot 04-03-2013 11:57 AM

I'll read the books.

footfootfoot 04-14-2013 10:45 PM

Watched a few more episodes of season 2. I just watched the birth scene of the red lady.

This series is indeed a sprawling leviathan. The dragons were cute and cuddly enough, but that last bit was over the top.

How the fuck is this whole thing going to tie together short of total world annihilation culminating in a deluge, a dove, and some pimply teenager waking up from a dream?

Two wings up.

Happy Monkey 04-15-2013 11:24 AM

No spoilers, but in last night's episode they explained why that birth-power doesn't just end the game of thrones on its own.

Nowhere near up to date, but I'd think the white walkers, dragons, that weird ghosty thing that leapt out of fire girl's quim, and a bunch of other stuff would need to be sorted out before the game of thrones was over. Sort of like Jumanji.

Happy Monkey 04-15-2013 11:55 AM

Yes, but the walkers and dragons aren't there yet, and absent further explanation, you'd think the ghosty thing could take out all of Stannis' local competition in short order.

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 06:26 PM

I'm all up to speed with Go'T.

Can't wait for Joffrey to get a sword in his neck. I hope the kid is actually a very good actor and not just a prick being himself in front of the camera. Jaqen was the coolest character in the show so far. Who would have guessed that Jaime Lannister was actually Luke Skywalker's father?

Clodfobble 04-18-2013 06:41 PM

Well color me surprised: that "kid" is actually 20 years old, and when he's done with Game of Thrones he intends to leave acting and pursue an academic career.

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 08:18 PM

Wow. And he's supposed to be very nice.

Here's a funny anecdote about Rose Leslie (Ygritte):
Quote:

The only annoying part of the whole business, she says, is that fans tend to be disappointed by her delivery. “I use a different voice — I put on an accent on the show — so when I say ‘You know nothing, Jon Snow’ in my own voice you get a furrowed brow from fans and they’re like, ‘That doesn’t sound like Ygritte.’ And then I got to go into [her character's] accent and do it and it’s a really long boring process for the fan and I’m sure they walk away wishing they hadn’t asked me because it’s such a kerfuffle.”
There was one time, however, where the catchphrase was used in real life rather awesomely.
Leslie was in Northern Ireland, one of the five countries where the upcoming season of Thrones was shot. She was sitting in a restaurant with a friend, and having a tough time deciding what to order. “And I said to the waitress, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to go for,’ and the waitress jumped in with the line. It was very funny; it was perfect timing. I gave her a high five.”
Leslie considers. “Actually, I wanted to give her a high five, but it would have been incredibly lame if I did.”

jimhelm 04-18-2013 08:46 PM

In tbe audio book, the guy that captures jamie and brienne has a speech impedement owing to his lack of a nose.

xoxoxoBruce 04-23-2013 10:14 AM

How they did special effects. Caution Spoilers.

Lamplighter 04-23-2013 11:20 AM

I'm becoming more and more cynical about pic's and videos...

I've started questioning whether every given pic is untouched.
The trouble with becoming so cynical is there are fewer and few "WOW !" moments.

Remember the first Star Wars movie, everyone was so impressed.
Now the professionally produced stuff is Ho Hm.
We watched Django Unleased last night... just another video game.

No, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus... just Adobe PhotoShop

jimhelm 04-23-2013 12:50 PM

But have you played a high end video game lately?

Lamplighter 04-23-2013 01:16 PM

After reaching a peak with Tetris, I got bored

jimhelm 04-23-2013 02:25 PM

I'm working through FarCry3 right now. It is like being in an action movie.

But so what?
When I watch a movie I want them to present the story, which includes the actors dialog, body language, and action, as best they can. I really don't care if it was the actor, a stunt double, or special effects, that got the character from point A to point B. The fact that he got from A to B is the story line, and they conveyed that.

Sure, it's obvious the $50 million star didn't jump off the cliff, through the flames, into the shark infested waters, but the story character did, and that's the goal... telling the story. I didn't care that Jessica Rabbit wasn't real, she was hot, and told her part of the story.

It seems every movie coming out has a youtube video compiling "mistakes", put together by some nitpicker(s) who watched it frame by frame trying to find any little gotcha. What shallow lives they must lead, after completely losing the magic of the movies.

footfootfoot 04-29-2013 11:13 PM

My children. You've disgraced the Lannister name for far too long.

xoxoxoBruce 05-02-2013 11:26 AM

wolf 05-02-2013 03:43 PM

Neat. Lucy music and B&W aside, that really looked more like an 80s intro ... think A Team and Hart to Hart.

I want to watch the whole season now, and also not have it be over.

footfootfoot 05-08-2013 04:42 PM

is it over?

Happy Monkey 05-08-2013 05:12 PM

No. But I want to watch all of the upcoming episodes, and still have it not be over.

footfootfoot 05-08-2013 05:17 PM

I know the thing you speak exact

orthodoc 05-08-2013 05:31 PM

So now that I'm not immersed in endless studying for the next week or so, should I be watching this series? I've promised myself I'll take a week off, then I'll have a few days post-surgery at the end of the month when I can watch stuff without guilt.

Hodor! :yesnod:

orthodoc 05-08-2013 06:02 PM

I take it that means yes ... ?

Happy Monkey 05-08-2013 06:05 PM

Absolutely! It's actually best to watch it all in a row, because they don't always hold your hand, reminding you of the significance of this or that, and if you're watching it in a marathon, you might remember more.

This.

I generally wait for a series to get a few eps in before I start watching. Can't bear the whole waiting a week thing. But this series in particular benefits from the marathon approach.

orthodoc 05-08-2013 06:13 PM

Is it on Netflix? Or do I go to an online site to stream it, or ...?

Clodfobble 05-08-2013 06:23 PM

Netflix has DVDs of seasons 1 and 2, and by the time you finish those they will probably have season 3 as well.

orthodoc 05-08-2013 06:27 PM

Thanks!

Happy Monkey 05-08-2013 06:45 PM

I doubt season 3 will be available soon; the season't not over yet and HBO is VERY slow to release DVDs. And you can't (legally) stream it unless you have access to HBO GO.

lumberjim 05-08-2013 09:48 PM

i'm dvr' ing it this season. if I can figure out how to get the files off of my dvr onto a dvd.... I'll have ... them.. on dvd.. ... or even blue ray, since i got a blue ray burner.....

Oh you're right, I thought 4 was what was on TV now. In that case season 3 probably won't be available for another year-ish.

I've noticed this too, and I don't understand it. Doesn't HBO know that if there is pent up demand, and they don't offer a way to legally slake that thirst for non-subscribers, many people are gonna steal it?

jimhelm 05-09-2013 08:10 AM

They didn't even get season 2 out in time for Christmas last year. I got Season 1 the previous year... and it was on my list last year.... but no.

Happy Monkey 05-09-2013 11:15 AM

Delaying DVDs increases the value of the HBO subscription, which is good for both HBO and the cable companies. I don't think any of them yet have the mindset to preempt piracy; just to try to punish it.

glatt 05-09-2013 11:28 AM

it also decreases the value of the DVDs, because many people will have already seen it illegally.

Happy Monkey 05-09-2013 11:47 AM

True.

BTW, apparently GRR Martin wrote next Sunday's episode.

jimhelm 05-09-2013 12:27 PM

That should be good.
Quote:

Martin is credited on the Game of Thrones TV series as a producer and consultant. He has written the scripts for the eighth episode of the first season, the ninth episode of the second season, seventh episode of the third season and the second episode of the fourth season.[1] It is planned that he will write one episode per season of the show.
