Wait Wait Don't Tell Me

Sometimes Marc Maron's WTF Podcast is great, but only if I already like the guest and Maron's not being whiny that day.

Thanks guys!

Undertoad 05-23-2018 06:51 AM

Pete Holmes was on Todd Glass a few weeks ago and the whole show is just one wild improv after another. Both guys so totally silly and playful.

Gravdigr 05-23-2018 02:37 PM

IDK if it's a podcast per se, but I like Mike Rowe's The Way I Heard It.

I need people to talk quietly so I can fall asleep. But then, not auto-play.

How do I do podcasts? I have an LG v30 running Android.

Undertoad 05-24-2018 04:46 PM

I use an app called Pocket Casts. It was just bought by NPR and This American Life:

https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/3/17...-american-life

The reason I use it is because it has both a desktop and mobile version - and when you are lucky, they sync. So if you get to minute 39 on the drive home, and start your home desktop up with the same cast, it will start at minute 39.

Griff 05-25-2018 06:39 AM

I'm using the same one. It seems to make sense.

I'm listening to a series on the space race on American Tellers. They got into the US falling behind by not wanting von Braun to lead because of his WWII baggage and some high level military industrial complex bribery. Turns out Ike wasn't reading tea leaves, it happened on his watch.

The History of Rome podcast is quite good, I guess I can go into his archives. Dude read the first chapter of his book The Storm before the Storm. We were always comparing the US and Rome back in college... humans behave as humans behave.

Ya put that fucker in a drawer and put the radio on a talk station* just barely loud enough to tell someone's talking, but, not quite understand them.

*Preferably something you couldn't give a shit about.

Clodfobble 05-26-2018 08:00 PM

Yabbut if you share your bed with another person, the radio isn't going to be a popular choice.

When I need to distract my brain enough to fall asleep, I listen to one of my favorite audiobooks through earbuds (one earbud, technically, because I'm lying on my side.) Audible doesn't have an auto-stop feature that I'm aware of, but yanking the earbud from the phone jack will do it, so at some point in the night I'll surface just long enough to reach over and disconnect it.

Hi Clodfobble

My Audible app has a sleep timer function. Perhaps you can put this to good use.

Clodfobble 05-27-2018 06:44 AM

Where do you find that menu?

BigV 05-27-2018 12:44 PM

In the app, when a book is playing, I click the three dots in a vertical stack in the upper right hand corner of the app. Sleep Timer is the top menu choice.

BigV 05-27-2018 12:50 PM

by the way, whoa, sorry for the monster image. I captured a screenshot from my phone and cropped it down to the menu you see. Still giant image. simple resizing in my phone image app collection is a total fail. If any of you have suggestions for resizing, I'd love to hear them.

Clodfobble 05-27-2018 02:48 PM

Ah ha! I found it. Didn't realize those menu options change when you're in a book vs in your library. This is very helpful, thank you!!

May I suggest a pillow speaker.

Dan Carlin is interesting.

Griff 08-30-2018 09:16 AM

I've just started listening to Words Matter. Buckley style conservatives trying to figure out what comes next. They seem to be trying to be honest with themselves about the GOP turning into a cult of personality.

I just started with Rogan. He has excellent mediation skills and people want to talk to him. I listened to his Andrew Yang interview and his debate between the Canadian "Pot Doctor" and the journalist who wrote the anti book.

That is the second interview with Yang I've heard. He really comes off as a good guy who gets it.

Undertoad 02-20-2019 10:05 AM

It appears Mr Rogan is conquering, in a format that (again) the old media did not anticipate: the three-hour, open, unscripted, uninterrupted conversation.

Who woulda thought that's what we wanted? But sometimes, that's what we want.

Gravdigr 02-20-2019 10:32 AM

It's the kind of thing ya want, if ya want that kind of thing...

I had no idea I wanted that but it turns out I do.

I just finished a great conversation on Why is This Happening? between Chis Hayes and Mark Galli. Mr. Galli wrote a challenging piece to his fellow Evangelicals about Trump but the conversation covers a lot more ground. The conversation was respectful between two very dissimilar people. Mr. Galli is very aware of the damage which Evangelicals do to themselves when politics come before Jesus Christ. He gave a much more nuanced view of himself and his movement than one might expect. Worth a listen.
