Brassica

Do you eat Brassica because Mom says you gotta, or because you like it?

Don't talk to me about Brussels Sprouts.

Dad loves the wretched things but I only eat them because it saves cooking another vegetable.

I went into town on Thursday morning and there were no loose sprouts to be had in M&S.

All they had were what I call 'sprouts on a stalk'.

The M&S marketing bods have other ideas...

£1.50* that cost me!

I usually buy fruit and veg from a very good (and cheaper) stall at the local market but they aren't back until the second week in January.

However, given that the Devil's vegetable keeps Dad happy, I'm inclined to the view that it was money well spent.

Mr Limey loves sprouts boiled to a ghastly mush. We have them every Sunday with our roast dinner. I prefer my sprouts to be just cooked, with some “bite” left in ‘em. So I put the Mr’s in to cook an hour before we eat, and drop mine in the pan at 10 minutes to “grub’s up”.

An hour! Holy *$%$! Ten minutes, absolute maximum - and that's for big ones. I love my sprouts!

I take a middle path. Thirty minutes is what they get.
They're being steamed even as I type.
I'm sure one of the little sods swore at me when I checked them a few minutes ago.

Sprouts are only good roasted with salt and a little oil

I love broccoli

Griff 12-29-2019 08:24 AM

Love them all.

Roasted BS are the best.

Roasted with bacon

Clodfobble 12-29-2019 10:29 AM

Roasted is good as long as there's a light vinaigrette or aioli to go with it; deep fried (unbattered) is fantastic.

We tried to get the local mobile chip shop (van containing deep fat fryer which parks in different neighbourhoods to sell deep fried, battered fish and chips) to do deep fried (battered) sprouts one Christmas on Arran. He refused, but did do deep fried pickles for us after we “discovered” them in Canada.

Drizzle balsamic on them for the last five minutes of roasting, that is excellent

Plow them under, all of them, Mr Limey would love my mothers cooking.

Griff 12-29-2019 06:51 PM

Broccoli with lemon, garlic, sausage, and noodles tonight.
