November 26, 2008: Chico & Gloria

Chico the pygmy Hippo and Gloria the hand puppet.
Quote:

A pygmy hippo which started turning up his snout at food has been given a helping hand to start eating again.
Chico worried keepers at his home in Heythrop Zoological Gardens when he began to refuse food.
But the little animal was lured back to his trough under the watchful eye of Gloria, a hand puppet based on the
star character in DreamWorks children's film Madagascar.

'We had been trying everything as Chico was refusing to feed and when I saw the Madagascar hippo puppet
in the supermarket I thought I'd give it a try,' Mr Howes said.
'We were extremely surprised when he took a liking to Gloria and we have been using it to feed him ever since.'

Maybe Mr Howes has stinky fingers. :haha:

yeah, that hippo is looking a little skinny around the eyes...

Gravdigr 11-26-2008 08:14 AM

Hahahahaha!!!! Baby hippos are dumb.

I loved that show: Chico and the Hand!

At first he wasn't a very hungry hungry hippo.

sweetwater 11-26-2008 09:46 AM

It's not like Chico can actually see the puppet when he's eating, so I think "stinky hands" is probable. Though it is difficult to imagine a hippo with a persnickety palate. :)

Its a hippo? How many carrots do you need to feed it in a day? I don't know if there are enough hours in a day to hand feed the monster.

barefoot serpent 11-26-2008 10:40 AM

maybe hippos don't like corndogs.

i think that's a good hippo-thesis.

Although if it came attached to a pack of laundry powder it might smell a bit nasty itself.

corndogs are a frankfurt sausage on a stick coated in batter and then deep fried right?

If so, I think you'll find most Australian's love them, especially at their local 'show' which is like a carnival combined with an agricultural and livestock competition.

I know it's the only time I eat them, but they taste bloody good amongst all the noise and dust and animal shit.

Yeah, and I like them, too. I was just ripping on a stupid old Sara Lee commerical that I never understood. the jingle goes: "Nobody doesn't like Sara LEE!" Which, since they ARE Sara Lee (baked goodies) I thought it meant everyone LOVED Sara Lee's, but it's a weird thing to say. So, if I am using it correctly, I am saying Everybody loves corndogs!~ A delicacy on a stick, I say.

Aliantha 11-26-2008 04:11 PM

We know the sausage is made from nothing but hooves and entrails...but you just don't think of that at the time. ;)

I was delighted and amazed when I first saw corndogs on sale in the, UK. Frozen ones, but well worth a try, especially as I had puzzled over what they were for a while (they're in The Dead Zone at the very least).

I was so disappointed.
Perhaps you have to grow up with them.

There's a sausage advert on tv at the moment - Walls I think - about how they only take the two best bits to make their sausages. Hmmmm. That would be breadcrumbs and colouring then I guess?

Anyway, slightly back on topic before veering off again - as it's an English zoo I'd bet my bottom dollar that Chico the hippo is named after... well, Chico. Of X Factor fame. My family saw him performing at their campsite in Great Yarmouth about two weeks ago. Ah the sweet smell of success. Although Mum admitted he was a great entertainer and my neice (14) was completely smitten.

OK, this is what I mean by a 'dagwood dog' or 'pluto pup'. The names are interchangeable.

eta: and of course this is what I think you mean when you say 'corndog'.
