Music Takes You Back
A old high school girl friend of mine said everytime she hears Fleetwood Mac she thinks of me--and whenever I hear Bob Seger I think of her. Another good friend in school was an Ozzy fan and hearing him makes me think of her. BOC's "Godzilla!" reminds me of my 16th birthday party; Def Leoppard makes me think of husband #1 and the Dead, #2.
Any Counting Crows song makes me feel sad as they were hot during a very painful time in my life. What songs/artists/music makes you recall your past? |
In the early 90's I spent a couple weeks at my dad's house which was in Mission Viejo after we moved him out there. We had the 4nonBlondes cd playing for a lot of that trip...So when I hear some of those songs, I'm there in that heat driving along the 5 on our way to a Mall near him.
It's the hook that brings you back, on that you can rely. -John Popper |
So many songs, so many faces... lyrics that take me to warm, wet, places.

When I hear Hymn to Her by the Pretenders it reminds my of my highschool boyfriend. I would have married him if we both hadn't been such drips back then.

Journey, Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin: I'm on the bus in 11th grade, and somebody has installed, for the first time, a set of speakers so we can listen to the radio on the way to school.
Bette Midler, The Rose: a set of girls in college, who loved to play and sing the song on piano and voice, force me to sing the harmony part again because they like how I do it. I protest: no, I'm busy, I've got to get to my next destination. But they force me. And to my surprise, in the middle of it, I tear up. Yes, Close To the Edge: I'm stoned out of my gourd as a senior in college, the lights are off and I'm totally transfixed by the slow middle section buildup to Wakeman's church organ transition. My arm moves in rhythm with it. Squeeze, Hourglass / Smithereens, A Girl Like You: I'm happy and zipping to work in my 1985 GTI with the tunes at high volume. |
A lot of the early to mid 1980s pop stuff will take me back to high school.
Also, any piece I've actually played brings back all kinds of associations if I listen to it--and if I actually play it again, well, wow. The most extreme example of this was Copland's Rodeo, which I played in 1985, and again in 2006. |
ok...this one.....i think everyone has a place for this one:
9th grade dance ...dancing with Jen Burdell....i think i touched her ass! |
Rock Steady by No Doubt always takes me back to a certain road trip to Las Vegas . . .

Summer Breeze
I don't have one particular song but a season of songs take me back to a time when all there was to do was to ride horses, watch clouds roll by, fall in love, go to partys.

Yes - The Revealing Science of God - All of side one from Tales from topographic oceans..... complete enlightenment on the 4th of july at my moms house summer '82 with my two best friends and a shitload of homegrown shrooms.
Starship Trooper - more specifically "The Wurm" - I wurmed in every new year from '79 - 2000. So that reminds me of New Years eve parties. The Ramones - Another High School friend named Eddie Hopkins loved them! He killed himself shortly after graduation, but hearing them still reminds me of Ed. |

Actually I clicked away as soon as the title came up. Any version of that tune deserves a warning label not just the Tipper Gore version. :D
