Vote on my new addiction! Let your voice be heard!

I have decided to think about quitting smoking after 16 great years. I need a trade-off that adequately compensates for something I held so dear. :D

I ate a lot of celery. Not everyone's favorite food, but it worked for me.

Go for it! I quit about 8 years ago and I can't even begin to express how glad I am that I did it.

I quit in May after 30+ years of smoking (I'm using the + symbol to pretend it wasn't quite as many as it was).

I took up fitness. This went nicely with my phobia of gaining weight as a result of NOT smoking. So far, I've lost 15 pounds, two clothing sizes, and 17 inches. Oh, and no longer have to take asthma medication. Gotta love it!

I voted for one that seemed fun.

What worked for me was to quit cold turkey during a really bad cold, because I never wanted to smoke then, and just didn't start back up.

Cicero 11-16-2009 03:52 PM

Oh I should clarify! I do not need to lose any more weight. I already look like an anorexic or meth addict.

Shawnee123 11-16-2009 03:53 PM

I wish you the best of luck. I might quit...some day.

classicman 11-16-2009 04:04 PM

Bullshit Shaw - You're many things, but not a quitter!

Shopping. Spend some of the money you save on fun stuff.

SamIam 11-16-2009 05:26 PM

Oh, come on, brat. If you quit, I'll have to quit, too. The Southwest won't be big enough for the two of us!

Seriously, good luck with quitting. Nicorette or those nicoderm patches can be helpful, so I hear. I quit for a year once, then started back up. Stupid me.

I know of a person who replaced cigarettes with carrot sticks, until her skin turned visibly orange from excess beta carotene in her system.

Good Luck Cicero!

Both the quitting smoking and an exercise addiction will help with that.

gvidas 11-16-2009 09:48 PM

I replaced smoking with whiskey, and then replaced whiskey with vodka.

But you didn't list that as an option, so I voted for a sex-based exercise addiction.

Good luck Cicero, I voted for all except the twitching. Being an X-Smoker myself, I know the secret to not smoking. Do not under any circumstances put a cigarette in your mouth, and light it.

wolf 11-17-2009 12:27 AM

sit and twitch, here.

I had a patient very sincerely ask me to quit smoking today.

I'm thinking about it.

Not because of him, though. I was thinking about it before.

Cicero 11-17-2009 11:14 AM

I have rationed myself my morning cigarette....I will have an evening cigarette. Let the twitch begin!!! :)

I have decided to not do it cold turkey since I am highly addicted to nicotine. I need to ween myself off. If I had a library of pharmaceuticals I could do it cold turkey but I won't take drugs. So....it will be like an alcohol addiction...easy does it. Slow it down then cut it off! I do have to deal with people and be in public. It's best I don't piss off the few people I am in real contact with- with my bad "I-just-quit-smoking-so-get-bent" attitude.

I do like the suggestion of a sex-based exercise addiction but that would really require a level of vanity I don't possess. I will never point out something like my sexy rock hard glutes. But this idea will certainly work for someone!! :)

I keep thinking that I should quit smoking when it is less difficult to do so. But when is that?
