December 9, 2006: Young man of the mountain
http://cellar.org/2006/youngmanofthemountain.jpg
Spluch finds and translates this item from the Chinese Xinhua: "This rock formation which resembles a human face (when viewed from the side) can be found at Shiquan town in Shanxi province, China. It was formed after the construction of the mountain road was completed. This creation is purely accidental." Now, this entry is less interesting to those of you who never saw or never heard of New Hampshire's rock formation which became its unofficial symbol, before it came crashing down in 2003: The Old Man of the Mountains. And as a long-time skeptic I know that the faces are simply our minds making sense of patterns. This is what we do. But I can't resist thinking, well, the Old Man can't be held back; knock him down in one part of the earth and his younger version pops out in another place. |
the chinese man of the mountain looks decidedly anglo. and a good bit tougher than the new england one. although, the new england one looks a good bit like the patriot on their football helmet.

No, I promise, it's purely accidental! ;-) |
He looks a bit Roman to me. It really is amazing how people can recognize a human face in almost anything.
|
He also looks annoyed. Maybe because they stuck a stinky road right under his nose..... or having to move half way around the world, when he still had 6,000 years on his lease. :rtfm:
|
And if you look at this formation from any other angle, it doesn't look like anything, I'll bet.

I didn't know the Old Man of the Mountain was gone. I saw that on my honeymoon back in 1991. :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_on_mars As far as I'm aware, this ability is an evolutionary thing; developed so that we can recognise our carers when we're babies, or at least something along those lines. |
