Bright and sunny...in the middle of the night

Summer begins later today in the Northern Hemisphere, and folks in Alaska will have days of virtually 24-hour daylight.

This pic is from Fairbanks, Alaska. And the time on there is correct--1:00am Alaska Daylight Time...5:00am Eastern Daylight Time.

I haven't researched much into it, but from what I've heard, constant daylight can wreak havoc on one physically and mentally...the same with 24 hours of darkness during winter.

The land of the midnight sun. Today is summer. Yesterday, spring. Tomorrow, fall.
A family friend in Nome says this winter was extremely warm and dry.

When in Nome, do as the Nomans do.

Drink heavily...

Aluminum foil on the windows in the bedroom, and a sleep mask would do it for me.

I suffer from SAD, and one thing that seems to work is this: I have a tropical rainforest tape I pop into the radio, and a swing arm lamp. I play the tape and direct the lamp into my face about 6 inches away. It's very bright and very warm on my face.

I've heard that quite a few Alaskans suffer from SAD. As far as yourself Ury, would you say that yours is partially caused by living in Seattle?

Uryoces 06-21-2003 01:38 PM

Oh, hell yes! The rain drives me batty. From early June-Late Sept, it's perfect here, but the winter months are mostly overcast/rainy.

There's nothing quite like staying up late Friday night, sleeping in and seeing the sun set just as you get up.

I wonder if people here on the East Coast are suffering from SAD now as well. Including this weekend, I believe Philadelphia has had 20 weekends of rain in some way, shape or form for the first 6 months of the year.

I was stationed in Iceland for a year once, Truley WEIRD stepping out of a club at 3am drunk as all get out and it is broad open daylite , it makes you stop and try to focus on your watch .
On the other hang it sucked in the winter haveing all darkness ,, I don't know if it is 08:00 or 20:00 until i got on post ( i was a marine guard )

On the other hang ...

Was this pun intended?

What does SAD stand for?

Uryoces 07-01-2003 05:44 PM

Seasonal Affective Disorder. Lack of sunlight during the winter months. Here in Seattle, there's quite a bit of cloud cover to go with it between November and June. During that time I'm a tad cranky and want to sleep a lot.

This sounds like my kinda place in winter, no sun! I love the concept.

Any one heard of SADS? (sunlight annoys and disturbs slang)

I have some pics here on the Cellar somewhere from Nome. They used to have a webcam overlooking the main street in town, but it hasn't been working right for about 2 months now.

Ah...found one. With the Geo Metro in it. Man, that fucking cracked me up...a Geo Metro in Nome. Insane.
