Bar Harbor, ME

Anyone close to there?

footfootfoot 01-30-2007 02:45 PM

closer than you, but not so close.

LabRat 01-30-2007 02:47 PM

Ok, like within an hours drive?

Trilby 01-30-2007 02:49 PM

I've been to Bah Hahbah. I LOVED IT! Can I go, too? Please? Please? One of my Dream Towns.

Flint 01-30-2007 02:50 PM

I can be within an hours drive if you can be within an hours drive...

Trilby 01-30-2007 02:50 PM

Oh, I'm not anywhere near Bah Hahbah. Like, 18 hours away....sadly.

glatt 01-30-2007 02:56 PM

LabRat, do you know they have a huge lab rat breeding facility in Bar Harbor? Are you planning to spring your brethren free?

LabRat 01-30-2007 02:58 PM

I am (possibly) going to a conference at Jackson Labs the end of March.

glatt 01-30-2007 03:01 PM

March in Maine is still winter.

Small town. Very touristy. Beautiful. Should be quiet in March. You'll need to go to Acadia since it's right there.

LabRat 01-30-2007 03:06 PM

what's there?

glatt 01-30-2007 03:06 PM

I used to work with a woman who's dad was one of the head honchos at Jackson Labs.

I never knew (growing up in Maine) that Jackson Labs existed until they had a fire there, and it was on the news that millions? of mice died in the fire. I was all like WTF?

Pretty scenery. That's about it. But it's a lot.

You'll want to drive all around Acadia National Park. It's all rocky coast. Lighthouses. Very pretty. Hardcore people get up to watch the sunrise over the ocean from the top of Mt. Cadillac (you can drive up it.) The town is pretty small. You can do a whale watch.

Too bad the conference isn't in July.

LabRat 01-30-2007 03:11 PM

There's a mouse colony management conference that my bosses want to send me to there.

I need to check that I can get away from the fam for the 4-5 days.

Looking forward to going if I can.

It's nice there. Very pretty. Even in March it will be good.

LabRat 01-30-2007 03:17 PM

I plan on taking an empty memory card and my battery charger :)

Shawnee123 01-30-2007 03:17 PM

My honeymoon was in Bar Harbor. I loved it! Had a cabin looking out to Cadillac Mountain. It's gorgeous.

LabRat 01-30-2007 03:19 PM

Now I'm really pumped...must make sure I can get away!

If you think you're "pumped" now . . .

xoxoxoBruce 01-30-2007 06:09 PM

Shame it won't be summer. The Rockefellers had an estate there that burned down years ago but they have two full time gardeners that keep the gardens primo.

There is a lot of antique carved stone artwork from Korea and China that John D. brought back in his travels. Beautiful flower beds, semi-private quiet spots with stone benches and even a Moon Gate in one wall.

The family likes to visit when they are in town or anchored in the harbor. The Bush family used to hang there too... maybe that's why it's called BAR Harbor. ;)

Sheldonrs 02-01-2007 11:32 AM

Bar Harbor is the last place I ever went camping. It was back in 1989. It was beautiful then. It was in August and it rained a lot but it was still a great place.
Of course, finding a place where you could get a 2Lb lobster, crab legs, baked potato, corn on the cob and biscuits for $10.00 was cool too. :-)

glatt 02-01-2007 12:37 PM

The thing I remember about camping in Bar Harbor was the couple in the campsite next to us from Quebec. They didn't come out of their tent more than twice the whole weekend. They were busy with other things. Very busy. And that woman was vocal. Tent walls don't do anything to stop the travel of sound.

...and cheese. Lots and lots of cheese.

LabRat 02-01-2007 03:37 PM

whatever for?

glatt 02-01-2007 03:40 PM

Don't LabRats like cheese?

LabRat 02-01-2007 03:41 PM

D'oh.

I was thinking, lobster+cheese??? WTF???

Perry Winkle 02-01-2007 05:53 PM

no, lobster + cheese = BADGER

Shawnee123 02-02-2007 09:11 AM

Sometimes someone gets the urge to pet a small furry animal.

That's where I come in.

My name's Friday. I carry a badger.

Duh duh duh duh...

I didn't get it at first. I thought it was written in American (like Grant's).

Then I went back to my spreadsheet and almost choked on my own phlegm. It was all the better for the satellite delay I promise :rotflol:

Shawnee123 02-02-2007 10:18 AM

Wasn't sure if 'cross the ponders would get the reference! :p

Sundae 02-02-2007 10:37 AM

For me it's from the film & not the series, but it works either way

Elspode 02-02-2007 03:00 PM

[UHF] "Badgers? We don't need no steenking badgers!" [/UHF]

Shawnee123 02-02-2007 03:33 PM

Don't forget the Stephen Crane novel, The Red Badgers of Courage.

Elspode 02-02-2007 03:53 PM

Then there's that fabulous Cream song, "Badger", with the oh-so-distinctive bass line.

Pee, Po, Belly, Bum, Drawers is a real crowd pleaser too.

nowhereman 02-07-2007 08:31 AM

You may find that at the end of March, there's not a lot happening in Bar Harbor. Most of the shops don't open until Memorial Day weekend, although that may have changed a bit since we were there. Cadillac Mt. and the loop road through the park are well worth the look, especially Cadillac at sunset. (Check the weather before going up though, the road may get slippery that time of year). Given the choice, I'd pick BH in the off-season anytime. Too many people in the summer for me, they always seem to be right where I want to make a photograph ...
Enjoy!

LabRat 02-07-2007 08:42 AM

Thanks!

Acadia National Park is supposed to be close...I haven't checked a map yet.

nowhereman 02-07-2007 09:43 AM

Acadia National Park is on Mt. Desert island, as is the town of Bar Harbor. Basically, the whole island is the park, and BH is at the northeast corner of it. When you're there, you're there.

glatt 02-07-2007 09:50 AM

So close you could walk there.

But drive instead. It's a National Park for cars.

LabRat 02-14-2007 11:44 AM

It's official, I'm making flight arrangements today with my boss.

I've finally had a chance to check out the Acadia Natn'l Park website today. Wow. Too bad that the park is 99% closed form Dec 1 to April 15. :(

There isn't any appreciable freetime during the actual workshop from Mon-Thurs. Depending on my flight schedule, I still want to rent a car and drive along the coast. More details later when I know more. Stupid winter.

If you get cold, just jiggle your backside...jiggle-jiggle-jiggle!

LabRat 02-15-2007 10:20 AM

Wiggle it, just a little bit....c'mon now and wiggle it....

Now I've got that damn song in my head. Blast you, Flint.

Booked my flight this morning. Change planes in Detroit. Pray for no late winter snow storms...

Shawnee123 02-15-2007 11:24 AM

Enjoy Bar Harbor...tell Cadillac Mountain I said hello.

LabRat 02-15-2007 01:42 PM

I would if I could get to it. Sadly, all the cool stuff to see doesn't open till 2 weeks after I leave :(. Plus, my flight arrangements don't allow for some rental car sightseeing of what is open. Pooh.

Oh well, just means I'll have to come back!

Shawnee123 02-15-2007 04:52 PM

Hopefully you will still get a feel of what makes Bar Harbor wonderful. Sigh...I used to dream of winning the lottery, getting a yacht and sailing it to Bar Harbor for the summer and Key West for the winter.

LabRat 03-23-2007 10:29 AM

So, I have hooked up with another participant who will have a rental car for the whole week (go me). There looks to be time for some sightseeing along the coast a couple different days. I have cleaned off a memory card, charged my batteries and am totally PUMPED for my trip.

---Oh. and the learning part should be good too...

See you guys in a week!!

glatt 03-23-2007 10:45 AM

That's really awesome! I've wondered once or twice if you were still going. Have fun.

Made it, but was dark when I got here so I haven't had a chance to check it out much. Heard the ocean though. Place we are staying is an old mansion. Neat. Obviously found the computers :) Called home, but no one was there to answer :(.

xoxoxoBruce 03-25-2007 08:58 PM

Congrats, enjoy! :D
