1/29/2004: Whale explodes

http://cellar.org/2004/whaleblow.jpg

It's Taiwan, yes that's a whale in the background and yes that's its insides just lying about in the street.

The whale ran agound and died on January 17th. They were transporting it to National Cheng Kung University in Tainan in southern Taiwan, on January 26, when suddenly its belly just burst due to decomposition.

Coming soon: the Cellar Smell of the Day. OH dear. That whale was 56 feet long, so you know this is NOT a good scent right now... glad we only have to look at it.

FileNotFound 01-29-2004 12:22 PM

That guy doesn't seem to suggest that the smell is very nice...hope that's not his moped..hehe

A sperm whale's stomach is going to smell worse then other whales. This whale does not eat plankton like other whales, it eats squid mostly. So, it's stomach contained decomposing squid and other fish, shrimp, crab, etc. EWWW!

A little bit about the Sperm Whale

That's too funny. What the hell were they thinking, putting it on the back of a truck and driving it through a city?

Why not let the scientists at the university come to the whale, instead of the other way around? It's not like the university had a whale sized refrigerator they could pop it into.

Oh my!....I honestly didnt know what to think after viewing this...wow.

Wouldn't it be terribly interesting to witness this? It would have been such a random site in the first place, a giant whale being hauled down the street on a truck, but to see it explode? Hah. Once again, another incident that could have been avoided by using common sense. Oh well....it provides entertainment for all of us.

I never thought that common sense said :

Whales explode.

:vomit: That's all I can say.

Doesn't everybody know that you have to puncture the skin of a dead whale (baked potato like) before dragging it through town.

zippyt 01-29-2004 06:16 PM

I was just sitting here humming "fish heads ";)

Leah 01-29-2004 06:21 PM

The person in charged of puncturing the whale had obviously failed cooking school. Oops

xoxoxoBruce 01-29-2004 06:44 PM

I've heard people say "bust a gut", but never saw it before.:)

It's kinda grainy but if you have P2P software (who doesn't?) do a search for whale explosion. In the 60s they figured the best way to remove a dead whale from the beach was to pack a bunch of explosives under it. BOOM. Wait a few seconds. Watch the people run for cover and the cars get smashed by falling blubber! (not to mention the seagulls take off!)

emmtayoe 01-29-2004 09:18 PM

Didn't they warn the beach-goers first? Or didnt the beachers at least notice them packing explosives under a giant whale and realize that they should get the hell out of there? At least I would, but you know how big I am on common sense. ;)

William of Normandy did the same thing when he died. Died of an abcess in his abdomen that got infected. Died in the heat of summer. While they were transporting him to Canterbury, he started to smell pretty bad. When they got him there, he wouldn't fit in the coffin, he'd puffed up so badly from gasses. During the service (which I imagine they tried to keep really short, his stomach exploded.
Yuck.
