Salome

So this weekend Mr Limey and I have spent our time in Portobello, by Edinburgh, rehearsing and playing in the opera by Richard Strauss.
A ridiculously ambitious undertaking for a bunch of amateurs to try and pull off on two and a half days' rehearsal and a rare enough opportunity to play this work, even for a professional band.
I think we managed it.
I must remember to ask Be-bop if he wants to come and hear Rheingold next year.

How does getting a gig like that work? Have you worked with that conductor before, or are there online audition notices, or what?

Niiice! It is always very rewarding to take a run at a musical challenge.

Hmmm, Limey doing the dance of the seven veils. :yum:

Limey, is there any video? Was the whole thing an amateur deal? Why so little rehearsal?

@Clod - outs a matter of who you know. I think we got to this gig because we'd met someone at another event (community outreach by a local professional orchestra), so when a couple of the regulars for this outfit weren't able to be there wee filled the gap and have been asked back ever since.
@Monster - the orchestra are all amateurs. The singers are semi-pro, or students. The outfit is called the Edinburgh Players' Opera Group and has met every year for seventeen years, initially tackling all of Wagner's operas, then moving on to R. Strauss. We're back with Wagner next year.
So few rehearsals? Well, you'd never get us all together for more rehearsals (some people travelled up from London etc.). To be honest, the scant rehearsal ads adrenaline which probably improves things.
There are still photos (will try to remember to post a link later), but I don't know about video for public consumption.

So the singing part of the opera isn't performed, just the music then? That makes much more sense.

Yeah. The singers sing, but there’s no acting or costumes.
