Alphabet Game

Take pictures of the unintentional letters you see in life. Like the Js I see in today's IotD. Enter as many times as you like for each letter (but only one pic of each scene). If there are too many entries for a given letter and you have a zillion, I will ask you to choose your top entries.

I will not cheat and use the pics I have from my Alphabet City Focus Study. :D

Archive pics may not be used. Pics must be taken from this point on.

Deadline is Halloween. Polls posted sometime during November. Guidelines for judging: 50% similarity to written letter; 30% originality; 10% composition; 10% discretionary. Some dwellars use cheap cellphones, some have cameras that cost $1Ks. All are welcomed and encouraged. Please do not judge based on blurry, low res or other camera quality issues.

Scores:

1st place: 10 points
2nd place: 7 points
3rd Place: 5 points
4th place: 2 points
5th place: 1 point

Prize: Bragging rights.

jimhelm 10-03-2011 11:09 PM

Are we going in sequence?

Extra points for tough letters like Q?

Do they have to be unintentional?

EXIF or it didn't happen.

monster 10-04-2011 07:30 AM

no, sequence not required, yes unintentional, no extra point Q is not tough, trust me -circle with a line through it?

V, I'm cool with trusting people, don't be a dick.

glatt 10-04-2011 08:25 AM

What does unintentional mean? You mean the letter just looks like a letter and isn't really one, right? We can intentionally take a picture of it, right?

glatt 10-04-2011 08:28 AM

Oh, I would add:
No Photoshop except for cropping, resizing, and rotating.

monster 10-04-2011 10:22 AM

yes sorry unintention means you can't arrange the object to form the letter. of course you take the picture intentionally. i'm an idiot.

GunMaster357 10-04-2011 05:23 PM

Already done there : Google Maps Alphabet

monster 10-04-2011 07:43 PM

Already done in many places. But that's pretty cool. It's fun to find your own, though.

monster 10-04-2011 07:46 PM

And let stick to the english alphabet. 26 polls is all I can cope with. upper and lower case will be lumped together.

In fact, let's eliminate I, O and L because they are too easy and that takes it down to 23 which is a great number.

I'm still not clear on the rules. Are Digger's pics OK, or are they arranged too much? For example, he clearly didn't move a bunch of pebbles into a J shape, but it sure looks like he spread out a nice clean sheet and put that pistol down for the "studio shot."

I was assuming we had to go out and shoot things in their native locations?

Doesn't matter to me, but we should all play by the same rules.

Pico and ME 10-05-2011 03:04 PM

The gun and pick seem iffy because it looks like he put them in place, but if we are voting (are we voting?), then if someone came up with a more natural picture for those letters, then his might lose.

Gravdigr 10-05-2011 03:10 PM

!

glatt 10-05-2011 03:35 PM

They were good, and depending on what the rules are, you might want to resubmit them.

i don't see the pics, is that the deleted post? In their natural environment is kind of the idea, but if the gun, for example, makes a nice Q shape with the trigger, then that would be OK IMO. But if you set up the gun and another object so together they formed the letter, then no, that would count as intentional. is that any better/clearer?

and har har har at the catch 22

So only 3 polls needed. Glatt wins IMO. Let's make these things "challenges" rather than comps with voting. If anyone wants to post a poll at the end they could, but I can't be arsed for this one. I enjoyed the challenge of looking for letter pics I hadn't already used for my focus study and I loved seeing Glatt's pics.

glatt 11-07-2011 01:21 PM

This was fun. I mostly forgot about it but a couple days there, I was really looking around as I was going about town.

I wish more people had joined in.

And monster, I didn't mention anything at the time, but I really enjoyed yours too.

monster 11-07-2011 03:10 PM

Wasn't out and about much, and nothing here at home would cooperate.
