Weightlifting Panda
 

After getting so addicted to Image of the Day as to check it many times a day for updates, I began to widen my search for cool pictures, and came across this cool panda on Yahoo News today.

"Yingying, a 17-year-old panda, born in a zoo in the southwestern province of Sichuan, lifts weights during a performance the Chinese Acrobats Arts Festival in Beijing late October 20, 2001. Yingying is said to be the only member of the endangered species in the world able to dunk a basketball, go down a slide and drive a car."

Certainly feels strange being the one to start a topic on Image of the Day...

Does any body know how many species of monkeys are on the endangered list?

Pandas aren't monkeys, are they? Monkeys have tails.

Yes. But that entirely depends on what you call a monkey and what you mean by the endangered list. There a different list depending which organization you are talking to. And when you are talking about monkeys, do you mean all primates or just primates with monkey in one of thier common names? Does this include Langurs, Macaques, Guenons, Marmoset? I am sure one of the dwellars could tell us which is a real monkey? And what do you mean by endangered? Do you mean Critically endangered, Endangered, or just Vulnurable?

But in answer to your to your question the number of species of primates that are listed as endangered or worse, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources's Red List, that have monkey in their common name is 42.

I can't help but wonder how you'd go about teaching a panda to drive (and could you convince him to learn the road rules to get a drivers license?). As amusing as it looks, that must be a horrible life for Yingying. He really doesn't look too happy in this tiny cage:

No way.. you underestimate him. Of course he's happy! Just look at him -- doesn't he look happy? He loves being in cages. :)

Is it me, or is this also the first panda to get road rage? I mean, look at his face!
